Martin Dosh still creates the complex electro-acoustic mash he’s known for here on his fifth LP, Tommy (named for a friend who passed, not the Who), but there’s more room in his song structures. Sometimes that room is for guest vocalists, like longtime collaborator Andrew Bird. Other times it just adds space to breathe. “Airlift” fits the latter. Even “Airlift’”s video, with its central character surrounded by books, records, and photographs, says something about letting go of stuff (objects or instruments) to introduce some calm. The video was directed by Shal Ngo.

Gorgeous video. I really like Dosh. I think he works much better in support of people like Andrew Bird, than he does solo. But he has a ton of creative energy and is very talented, and I love to see him get any possible respect.
Dare I admit that I actually teared up a bit when the grizzled old guy gave what appeared to be one of his last remaining “magical” processions to the girl? I’m probably misinterpreting or not looking deep enough or something, but on an involuntary level, the piece was very powerful.
My “gauge” for whether I consider a piece to be well done is taken from a Wallace Shawn quote, namely, “I’m not interested in a production unless it touches me”.
This one touched me.

The slight, benign smile on the old guy at the end was in exquisite proportion to what it is, and isn’t, that truly animates us . It will likely stay with me a long while.
