Oberst’s eponymous solo album just came out a few months ago, but the man and his Mystic Valley Band are already folding new songs into their set. There were a couple new ones (and a Paul Simon cover) in Austin at the end of September and last night they performed “Nicorette,” also recently popping up live, on Late Night. You can watch it at Hulu. Indie bands playing new songs on late night talk shows is a trend we can get used to.

c’mon now, doesn’t anyone else find oberst really boring these days? his songs, his voice, so damn bland and average, i think Malkmus slagged him a couple years back, i concur

  4. Actually, i find Oberst more fresh now than when he was writing albums like Fevers and Mirrors. The Bright Eyes catalog is great but I would prefer the MVB anyday. Especially with songs like Nikorette and I Got A Reason 1 and 2

i really like bright eyes and his new solo cd but every new song released since then has sucked!

    such cheesy lyrics

  6. he has no emotion in his voice, it seems like he is revolting against his old ways

  7. It’s not a crime for somebody to change their vocal style from the way they did things when they were like…. seventeen.

I saw the mystic valley band show in boston the day after the election. It was very very strong. They played a ton of new material, most of which was really good. And i get the sense they’re reworking songs on tour so none of the songs is a finished product yet. I agree he’s trying to get away from his emo-ish days, and i can’t really blame him. And he still remains capable of a brilliant line or two in the middle of an average song. whether or not people like him I’d say his talent is not really desputable at this point. I wonder if there will be another MVB album before a new bright eyes record.

  9. god bless conor oberst and him discovering country music. and ain’t that nik freitas singin the bridge and playin guitar?

  10. I saw them Halloween night in Chicago. They played 4 or 5 new ones with the drummer singing one and the other guitarist singing another. All were good. They were also all wearing ghostbusters costumes and opened the show with the ghostbusters theme, so, you know, that was pretty cool.
