Sleigh Bells - Treats

When BTW Sleigh Bells stormed out of CMJ with copious plaudits for their home demos’ blown-out beats and serrated noise-pop, the most frequently pitched questions centered on whether the needle-jacking overdrive fuzzing up their cuts was an aesthetic choice the duo would recreate on their inevitable full-length, or a happy accident bound to be sterilized when M.I.A. escorted them into more expensive recording facilities. The answer comes in the form of the lead track from Sleigh Bells’ forthcoming Treats LP, “Tell ‘Em,” with a mix that’s both pristine and pulverizing. For fans of “Beach Girls,” “Infinity Guitars,” “A/B Machines,” “Crown On The Ground,” and all the bands that are bound to crop up and cop this sound in the coming months.

  1. Bitchen track. Another reason why I’m totally stoked to see them this summer with M.I.A. and Die Antwoord!

  2. Fuck yes. They opened with this at the show I caught last March. Sounds fantastic. I’d like to see them get a drummer, however.

  3. This sounds so great, but I’m left to wonder: what will a rerecorded Crown on the Ground sound like? This amazing? Or will it lose some of its lo-fi charms?

  4. Really LOVE the production, but the melody is kinda of weak IMO

  5. Whoa! I am loving the production, and hope the rest of the album sounds like this. The demos are catchy and fun, but goddamn if they don’t make me wince from the cellphone concert footage quality.
Also, did they change “Ring Ring” to “Straight A’s”? Because damn that song needs to be on the album.

  6. I love this! Really looking forward to this album.

  7. I don’t really get the buzz on this band.

  8. I think Sleigh Bells touring with MIA is a sign of the apocalypse.

  9. Looking forward to listening to the other ten tracks.

  10. I saw them a few times at SXSW, and they were absolutely horrible live, a complete disaster.

    • Then why did you see them a few times?

    • Apparently we walked away from SXSW with completely different opinions then. They abso-fucking-lutely destroyed the 1am slot at P4k’s showcase. Easily one of the best, if not the best shows I saw this year. Maybe you don’t like dancing and getting your balls blown off though.

  11. more hipster hype/garbage

  12. this group is nothing special and this song is cheesefest. sorry but it seems anyone that likes this band just crawled out of lame Z100 monotony and thinks they discovered cutting edge music. it’s like “wow, the drums are distorted, how breakthrough!” yeah, maybe if you’re a 10 year old that just graduated from hannah montana.
it’s just contrived and corny. m.i.a. is either losing her touch or she just sees $$ hocking this to teen sheep…or maybe she was a bit of a phoney from the first place (after all, she’s been milking this sri lankian revolutionary thing forever despite being from London)

  13. three more things:
    1. No one here may have said that. But annoying gimmicks like the distorted production on some of their earlier stuff is for suckers that think it’s cutting edge.
    2. No one said M.I.A. is hurting financially (she married into the Seagram’s fortune, in case you didn’t know). it doesn’t mean she wouldn’t want to make money off of an album she’s invested in. BTW- I strongly doubt you know Maya so stop saying naive superfan shit like “she’s not making music for the money.”
    3. iCarly is not a fan of you…she told me.

oh, and…Sleigh Bells blows…live and recorded.

  14. they were so good when I saw them open for Yeasayer this weekend

  15. does anyone else have the feeling they would really like this band if it wasn’t for the singer/lyrics?
