The other day we discovered at least three of you still give a shit about Belinda Carlisle. So we’re gonna make your day with the Go-Go’s singer’s cover of Monsieur Gainsbourg‘s “Bonnie And Clyde,” from her forthcoming solo disc VoilĂ . We think the punctuating yelps were cooler on Luna’s cover, but Belinda’s French is better.

And just for fun, here’s Belinda with Lea Thompson on Celebrity Duets last month. Lea was eliminated from the competition after this performance.

Je me rappelle bien quand j’ai ecoute a cette chanson pendant la classe de francais. Merci beaucoup pour le post.

  2. Old media bites new media: today I picked up my local newspaper (the Atlanta Journal-Constitution) and saw that Stereogum was quoted, in an article about Lindsay Buckingham.

I’ll give her credit for taste and a good effort. Should have dropped the yelps altogether. Nothing can compare to the creepiness of the original.

Steve Wynn & Johnette Napolitano did a good English version on one of his albums.

Lea Thompson’s husband looks like her dad. Still, I’m compelled to watch this clip over and over, despite her scarily skinny legs. What does that say about me?

  5. That’s really good. No qualifiers, there: no “for a cover,” no “considering who’s doing it,’ just… really, really good.

Kudos to her for doing something different with the song. I’ve heard Luna’s cover, and Mick Harvey’s, and the arrangements both stay pretty close to the original (with the exception of the violin on Luna’s, which I love). I love the fingerpicked guitar figure on this, and the Moroccan-stytle vocalizing towards the end.

Who’s the guy singing with her?

    Oooh.
I forgot to add that if you go to Jane Wiedlin’s Myspace she sings a great version of “Treat me rough”

I’m surprised by how good and not-cheesy this is.
Those who want to be surprised by another good post-success Belinda track should hear ‘goodbye day’ or ‘big scary animal’.

  9. Another gem from the BABE only hope there’ll be an english language version for we “French impaired” listeners. Otherwise kudo’s to Belinda…

Wow…I’m from Texas and did not understand one word of the song….but it was cool to hear Belinda Carlisle sing again. Her voice is awesome in French too. I would buy the CD just to hear the other songs.

It never ceases to amaze me that Belinda does not receive the respect and acclaim that she deserves. Not that she gives a s***!
