The National have a new album out today called High Violet. It’s really good. This is its first official video for a song you’ve heard before, “Bloodbuzz Ohio.” It was directed by Hope Hall, Andreas Burgess, and Matt’s wife Carin Besser. D.A. Pennebaker shows ups as a bartender. Otherwise it’s Berninger’s show: He offers smooth dance moves, sly glances, and a very promising raincoat. (I’m a little bummed there isn’t more water in it.)

High Violet is out via 4AD.

  1. Hey! Brewers shirt!

  2. stay thirsty, my friends

  3. does anyone else feel like matt berninger is a GQ version of david berman?

  4. I’m pretty sure that bar is Flatbush Farm, which is exactly where a dude like him would be hanging out.

    • “thank you to flatbush farm, milk bar and complete studios” in the credits at vimeo.

      • Yeah, but I eyeballed it. On another note, they have the worst service in the world there. Apparently, you have to be Matt Berninger to get your beer within 15 minutes of ordering it.

  5. It is irrelevant that I do not like this video. Would watch pretty much anything set to this song.

  6. great great wonderful amazing song…. stupid stupid boring retarded video.

  7. I’m gonna wait for somebody to make a GIF out of Berningers’ “smooth dance moves” near the end of the video.

  8. Not a fan of the video, great song, great album.

  9. Wait. No ” & John Lennon on Drums”!!!! Commmeee ONNNNN! Gosh……….Side note I like the way it was shot…….But you have to respect drunk, wasted, Lennon goin ham in the background.

  10. Berninger’s taking the piss! I can’t believe more people don’t talk about how funny his lyrics are — and intentionally funny, not even ironically! Yay, humor.

  11. i couldn’t make out the lyrics to find it ironic, but i thought the video was quite funny. great song too. and i wanna grow to look as cool as matt.

  12. Mosta the junk he says in this song realllly isn’t ammusing. “I still owe money to the money to the money I owe” is such a flippin solid line! he totes gets to the heart feeling of being debt ridden in super truncated hand. this song just isn’t all the hilarious at all, the vid is though, bad decision making.

  13. This is such a great song…. yeah, let’s get Matt on the Cover of GQ… he could pull it off… totally… Great line by the way… “I still owe money to the money to the money I owe…” very SOLID! Wonder why they dropped the fever line from the live version of this song in Boston… nice to see the work in progress and the final cut….

  14. This is a good song, but it’s far from the best on the album. I think the reason it is being pushed out in front as a Single is simply because it is less brooding emotion and more straight forward rock. It’s more accessible and stands on it’s own.

The National does best when their songs fit together into a looming wall that casts shadows over the city. “Blood Buzz Ohio” is much better in the context of the album than it is sitting like a brick on the sidewalk.

As far as the video is concerned. I like Matt. I think Matt’s lyrics and vocals are a really prominent part of the song. I still wish the video was more than just shots of him acting funny. He seems very vulnerable without the band with him. And The National is far from being just a one man show.

  15. Upon first listen, Terrible Love, and Lemonworld were def my fave tracks on this bad boy. Lemonworld is so epically raw, in a hella literal sense. Its got those awesome imagery ridden lines that MB is hardcore juiced on. But its also got their classic, like, straight heartbreaking story thats not entirely understandable, theres so much un-divulged that you really just have to imagine. Like secret meeting for me has always been about a son visiting his dad whose totes losing his mind. That could be very very different to tons of other people and I think thats what makes him such a rad lyricist.

Terrible Love I just don’t even have to talk about, its like the Illiad in musical format, in that its so poetically but economically built.

anyway yee, this album, the new Future Islands album are the only things on rotation in my office right now. Their sort of a gorgeous amalgam of semi-throwback sounds.

  16. I should grow a beard…
