His career-capping, infamous head-butt aside, Zinedine Zidane had an historic run as an all-world French footballer (that’s world-speak for “soccer player”), and Glaswegian director Douglas Gordon has set his story to film in the Cannes-loved, “experimental documentary” Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait.

To aid with the drama (and the “experimental”), Gordon enlisted fellow Glaswegians Mogwai to record the film’s soundtrack, an affecting, cinematic affair that’ll make fans of the Scottish post-rockers swoon. Building to subtle crescendos rather than distort-assaults, the tracks actually make us wanna see a movie about soccer!

Check the film’s trailer here. They best set that head-butt to some seriously overdriven Braithwaite guitars.

Mogwai’s soundtrack to Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is out 10/30 on PIAS Recordings.

I want to see this movie, just for the soundtrack.

  3. Thanks for posting these. I’ve been trying to find them since I saw the trailer a couple months ago.

  4. When I saw that leaked I swore it was a hoax.

  5. FYI, it’s not a traditional documentary (Gordon’s more of a video artist than a filmmaker). They kept several cameras on Zidane throughout the entire course of one match. Then they set the footage to music. Pretty sure that’s it. Not sure if there’s crowd noise, but there’s no dialogue.

i first saw mogwai in 97 w/ macha and they blew me away. after recovering from the internal bleeding i’ve seen them 6 or 7 times since and to be fair they have gone down hill…these tracks are the first recordings i’ve heard from them that give me that old feeling. being a footie fan, i can’t wait to see the film. anyone else hear heicon 1 on ‘friday night lights’ tonight. an omen for sure…

I’m in Dublin and I saw the opening of the movie and it’s really cool. There’s no dialogue save the occasional Zidane quote and the movie really is just multiple cameras watching him for a whole game. The concept of “21st century portrait” seems to be the idea that a small piece of someone’s life can become a peek into who they really are. The music rocks, see the movie.

  8. I gave the film a short capsule review during the Toronto Film Festival. I think it was a beautiful film with an astounding soundtrack -
