Arcade Fire - The Suburbs single

You got a very short teases of Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs” and its B-Side “Month Of May.” Now it’s time to hear them both in full/feel more satisfied. One’s slow, one’s fast. One drives, one sorta jangles. Stream ‘em at HypeM. The single’s out officially 6/1. LP3 The Suburbs comes 8/3 (or 8/2 depending on where you live).

  1. omg, I love the arcade fire. I love the suburbs,I also like month of may too, even though its different.

  2. I must listen to this when I get the chance. The Suburbs better be really fricking good. I know Month of May will.

  3. I’m really digging this, but it makes me want to hear these guys in context.

  4. Nowhere near as good as Intervention (first single off Neon Bible) or anything off of Funeral really.

  5. its almost like they give a shit if people like it

  6. Now comes the big question: is this just a standalone single? Because I seriously want a new Arcade Fire album.

Also, The Suburbs > Month of May. Most definitely.

  7. yeah, i hope month of may is a bad b-side. sounds like it.

suburbs….i agree, eh. not as good as anything on funeral. not as good as anything on neon bible either…i’d say this is a “black mirror” quality song (which is, in my opinion, maybe the only sub-par song they have).

if this was the first song this band ever released, would anyone give a shit about this mp3 though, the way people do give a shit? consider that. i don’t really think so. maybe this album will prove me wrong.

  8. You’re going to hate me for saying this, but the beginning of The Suburbs sounds like She & Him’s “I’m Gonna Make It Better.”

  9. This poor band has gotten so much hype-overkill ever since Funeral. I applaud them for doing a light departure like “The Suburbs” because so many moments on Neon Bible made it sound as if the Arcade Fire were taking themselves too seriously. “The Suburbs” also happens to be extremely enjoyable.

“Month of May”? Eh, not so much…

  10. i would have to agree with you katie, but i think only for the first 30 or 45 seconds then both go there own way

  11. Damn these are amazing songs on the surface. Can’t wait to hear the actual mp3′s because a bit of the instruments were obviously lost in the process of ripping them from radio.

The lyrics on The Suburbs (at least what I am hearing) are pretty heart-wrenching and thematically, remind me of the book, Revolutionary Road. I think this will actually be pretty funny in a few months when a sample of the song will be featured in a carefree-living, clothes, or car commercial.

Month of May sounds like a brother version of (Antichrist Television Blues), so I adore it. However, I can see the live version being 10x better than the studio version.

    • Just a side-note.. I have to marvel at how what used to be “cd quality” is now “mp3 quality,” and how what used to be “mp3 quality” is now “streaming quality.” Dude where’s my fidelity. Not your fault, nothing wrong with your comment (in fact I appreciate the thought you put into the review), just thought I’d point that out.

  12. here’s why both songs are good….they are not overdramatic or overblown (the biggest problem area for the band …mainly neon bible)…the play it straight …month of may gives an adequate rocking for 3/4 of the song…while the suburbs jangles after the goldrush…

  13. im sooo happy that these songs are already out. they two are amazing,, they still have the patented arcade fire style. seems to me that Win really wants a kid (the suburbs) month of may sounds a bit like a filler or something. but i like the feel of it.. kinda gives me the image that they’re all dressed in strange clothing with strange haircuts and make up for some reason. ha

both songs are amazing, cant wait for the album :D

  14. wow. i gotta say, i’m impressed. both great songs, both totally unexpected. two thumbs up.

  15. I like Month of May. Sounds like Bowie, both young Bowie and old. A good thing to me. It particularly reminds me of “Cactus” from the Heathen album.

    • I can hear the similarity to “Cactus” (the bluesy chord progression), but you’ve got to give it the proper shout-out: The Pixies original version is so much more memorable than Bowie’s cover, in my Pixies-loving opinion.

  16. Oh Boy Oh Boy Oh Boy I missed these guys…

  17. Stereogum, go to arcade fire’s website you will see the big news.

  18. come on guys, you’re like the last people on the internet to relate the good new album news

  19. I do not understand the dislike for Month of May. Good punk sounding song…

Overall a very different sound for Arcade Fire. Too me that’s a good thing. As others have said, I wouldn’t want them getting overly serious.

  20. I don’t see how this is a sonic departure for them – if you listen to their pre-Funeral EP, “Suburbs” sounds like some songs from that album (which is fantastic). Especially Vampire/Forest Fire. I can’t get that into Month of May yet, but I don’t like the sort of dance punk that has infiltrated music these past years. Can’t wait for this album!

And stop complaining that their new stuff isn’t “as good” as their older stuff – if you want to listen to Funeral, then go listen to Funeral for Christ’s Sake! If you want to hear Apologies to the Queen Mary again, ditto. Bands grow children.

  21. dig that part in the suburbs that goes ba ba ba ba ba ba ba booooooooooooooorrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing

  22. Best New Artist nominee. Just wait.

  23. okay, so both of these songs will be on the new album. thats great because i love both of these songs.

  24. God, they are insufferable. Yes, Arcade Fire, tell me about “The Suburbs,” won’t you? Another superficial, warmed-over Ice Storm in verse, please. Give us another hour of faux-spiritual claptrap trading on cheap cliche about youth and, like, dying, and people in perilous situations with which it doesn’t sound for one second like you have any familiarity. Then I will cherish it forever as something far more than the maudlin fake it is. “Wouldn’t want them getting too serious.” Oh no. Not at all.

    • What do you want? Radio friendly songs about kissing girls?

    • yes they have no familiarity to haiti (in haiti), or death (in all of funerals), or confused spirituality (in neon bible). Pauramon – you’ve hit the nail on the head, Arcade fire writes uninspired “faux-spiritual” music not at all related to their personal lives.
They take common themes, write beautifully constructed songs and use metaphors to express themselves. I don’t see anything wrong in that.

    • I happen to agree with you fully. Kudos for the courage to honestly appraise the song for what you hear. I personally don’t take to this musical style, though they do it better than anyone else in this sub-sub-genre. It’s not bad writing, and the production is pretty good. I won’t be buying this, but I wouldn’t pshaw at anyone who did. Just wouldn’t form a band with em.

      • ha, anonymous message board criticism = courage.
(sorry, I really don’t care if you have a different opinion, I just thought that was funny)

  25. I love this band. The whole post-card pre-album release marketing stuff is genius. I’ll never forget buying Funeral and reading the Memorial Pamphlet liner notes years ago, and not to mention the iconic Neon Bible emblem/sign and cover. It’s refreshing there’s still bands that put just as much thought and detail into their album presentations as they do as writing and recording their music.
