Wavves - King Of The Beach

Last summer we heard Nathan Williams, aka Wavves, join forces with Zach Hill for “Cool Jumper” and clap hands on a demo for “Mickey Mouse.” A year later, one of those tracks appears on the forthcoming King Of The Beach, an album Bella Union just tagged as “the punk record that will define 2010.” That could be read in a couple of ways. Take another listen to the updated tunes after absorbing the album art and reading Williams’ thoughts on the record.

There was a conscious effort going into this that I didn’t want to make the same record again. I already made the same record twice, with the same fucking cover art … It wasn’t overbearing, but I didn’t want to recreate something I’d done. I wanted to make something bigger, something stronger…

…in case of future bar fights. Listen:

King Of The Beach is out 8/2 in the UK via Bella Union and 8/3 in the US via Fat Possum. You’ll find some version of “Mickey Mouse” on it.

  1. Is it just me, or do they sound the same as before?

  2. I wasn’t a big fan, but I liked both of these songs. They sound similar, but not the same (ahhh, semantics!)

  3. these are exactly the same

  4. they are exactly the same!

  5. Never mind. I misread the article and am dumb.

  6. i’m almost positive it said “take a listen to the updated tunes” a few minutes ago and now it says “take another listen”.

  7. these 2 songs aren’t from “king of the beach”

  8. Songs are not working. N E 1 with the URL loop?

  9. mickey mouse kicks ass

  10. This article should just be re-written completely.

Having the “Cool Jumper” demo there is so unnecessary. Unless the name of the song has changed, it’s not on the tracklist for King of the Beach. Ugh…

  11. anyone else hear the Animal Collective vibe in “Mickey Mouse”?

  12. These are the original internet versions. I wonder if the album versions will sound any different. If so, I hope they wont ruin “Mickey Mouse”.

  13. Sounds a lot like AC to me.

    • agreed. they sound like animal collective. why is this guy getting so much press? I don’t understand. This is stuff we’ve all heard before.

It’s not HORRIBLE, but it’s not very original or different than any other blog-band that I’ve been hearing lately.

  14. these links are not working, please fix it!!!
