This stuff may be sorta dark for the Monday morn back from the weekend of expanding waistlines, but it’s too good to care. The Jim Yoshii Pileup’s Quarterbar has posted “Quarterbar Gets Sad With Motown,” four remixes of classic Motown tunes, bringing out the inner indie in the likes of Smokey Robinson, The Four Tops, and The Supremes. To the timeless vocal track for each song, Quarterbar adds synths, electro beats, and plaintive acoustic guitars. So good. (via GvsB)

    truly, truly horrible.

  3. Might’ve been cool had he bothered putting the music in the same key as the vocals. It’s unlistenable as it is.

Are you serious? Who’s responsible for posting this?

I like! Jimmy Ruffin is one of those names that should be more often bandied about when people talk Motown. Smokey is awesome, but Jimmy’s the shit.

The pointy stick is lodged tightly in my left eye. So horrible.

  9. Ugh…that is god awful! Way to suck the soul out of Motown and make it sound like crappy melody-less “indie rock”.

two of these tracks make Wangie B. say “YES!”

the other two are real good too.

  12. I was rooting for this, I really was. The concept is cool, the end product, not so much. I like both parts independent of each other, but together equals Starbucks muzak. Sad. So very, very sad. Is it because I grew up ON Motown, IN Motown? Most likely, yes.

  14. Someone e-mail me with the vocal tracks from these Motown songs. This is a cool idea gone terribly bad, but I know I can whip up a HELL of a lot better results.

I’m serious! Get me those a’capellas and I’ll knock this one out of the park.
