They’ve included some goodies, but the ranking’s an anarchic mess! How punk.

The Stooges should definitely be higher. Funhouse is not only the best punk album of all time, but one of the best albums of any genre. And what about the Gun Club? The Fire of Love is an amaaaazing album.
bad religion needs to be higher, as does the clash, but i do think dookie is amazing
What is punk?
Where is Mrs. Lennon in all of this? If Yoko Ono’s FLY album or AIU isnt punk, what is?
There was lots of good punk in the 90′s. Bad Religion, Pennywise, NOFX,Dwarves, and a lot more. Millencollin..also good. Nirvana is good but not punk. Blink 182 and green day are not punk and they suck. Misfits should have more than one album on there and so should bad religion. Every epitaph band wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for them. and the clash and all those 70′s bands fucking SUCK. AFI sucks now, but i was happy to see black sails on there…although i prefer shut your mouth and open your eyes.

Let’s get one thing straight, those of you that don’t think Gang of Four should be on this list are idiots. Bands of their type and vintage broke new ground..unlike hardly any bands these days. Also where’s Echo & the Bunnymen…criminal. The inclusion of Blink 182 and the like makes this a joke…which i believe is precisely what the magazine wanted..they knew it was a load of crap and just wanted to generate interest. I actually like Green Day,but there’s no way they’re better or more influential than the Clash,Damned,Echo, the Ramones, and even the Talking Heads in the early days. Ciao.
For sure the list needs:
Patti Smith
Agent Orange
NY Dolls
Husker Du
Circle Jerks
Then some crossover bands:
Violent Femmes
The Kinks
Talking Heads
The Pretenders
I could go on and on – that is how it is with lists and opinions. In my opinion the list has too many 90′s groups that I wouldn’t really consider Punk. But opinions are like certain body parts…

they cant include all yor favorite bands for one so quit bashin good punk bands that still have a larger punk following then your other bands. like blink 182 they may not be the most punk”iest” band out ther but inst punk about living for the moment breaking the rules and going further and where none has gone before. and that is what most of these albums did

hahahahahaha, great!
..what do you mean “this list isnt a joke”?
i know its been said, but what the fuck is blink doing on there? and before some of the most amazing bands of..ever.
i cant even put my thoughts into words. no TSOL, no Unseen, no gorilla biscuits, no leftover crack or CV, no INDK, no youth brigade…
throw away half this fuckin list right now.
The sound and style of punk has changed with the times. I cannot quickly recall any “modern” style of music that has not changed over the last thirty years. I was glad to see SEX PISTOLS at #1. The Goo Goo Dolls had some great stuff b4 they became popular. They were punk for years.

I may be old school but when I think PUNK I think RAMONES. Definite lack of respect to Joey, Johnny and Dee Dee who created much of the early buzz for Punk. Gabba, Gabba, Hey!
How can you have a list of the best punk albums that does not include The Cars and the B-52s. This is like having a hall of fame without Babe Ruth or Ty Cobb.

Are you fuckin’ kidding me? This list is infested with corporate crap. Blink 182? Nirvana? The Offspring? Green Day? What a bunch of sell-outs.
Where’s the Suicidal? DI? DRI? 7 seconds? Agent Orange? TSOL? Big Black? G.G. Allin?
DK–In God We Trust Inc. Nazi Punks Fuck Off.

definately some bullshit!!!!!!! F#$%^&* emos
Honestly, this list was compiled by someone who never grew up during the 70′s. Sorry, but during the 70′s bands like the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Velvet underground, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Iggy were all the god fathers of punk and probably rank higher on this list. I guess the insertion of bands like Nirvana and blink were based more on their commercial success? Just very inaccurate and not at all completely thought out top 50 list of greatest punk bands.
no gg allin, or fear. an how can any band from the late ’90s get a top 25 listing when operation ivy doesn’t get into the top 10.
These people are fucking gone, half those bands have nothing to do with punk. Wheres the fucking New york dolls you morons?

D.R.I
murphys law
fishbone
mucky pup
early chilly peppers (uplift mofo party plan ect.
)
This list is complete bullshit. Crass should be at #1 and the only other band on that list worth mentioning is Discharge because they created
d-beat.
As for the fact that they didn’t have one female group on there, I agree and unfortunatly I’m not surprised. Bikini Kill would have been a great mention as well as Wendy O and Nausea (whom should have been at #2). Also, Aus-Rotten is great as well. These were some of the bands I’ve known to extremely effect punk in the political and musical way. I didn’t hear about women’s rights (or should I say “womyn’s rights”), animal rights, squatting and actually giving a fuck about the world until I heard the bands mentioned above.
Lol @ Hot Topics assistant managers…
It’s kind of funny, because I was looking at the coments, and pondering the list, and then I realized that it was actually going to be printed in a magazine. I mean, “punk” or not, it is a fairly ludicrous one.
Reading the words “the Exploding Hearts” made me sad, tho.
FUCK ALL OF U AGAINST GREEN DAY, GREEN DAY ROCKS!!! ALTHOUGH I DO AGREE THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOME FEMALE BANDS UP THERE. ALSO IF THERE WEREN’T BANDS LIKE GREEN DAY FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS, THEY WOULDN’T KNOW WHAT PUNK WAS OR WHAT OTHER BANDS, BECAUSE GREEN DAY DOES REFER TO OLDER BANDS BEFORE THEM, AND FROM THERE THEY LEARN. YOU CANT EXPECT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT IT IF THEY DIDN’T GROW UP IN THOSE YEARS. THEY HAVE TO FIND OUT FROM SOME WHERE! WHETHER YOU LIKE THEM OR NOT, GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR BEING THERE FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATIONS. ALSO AMERICAN IDIOT SHOULD BE ON THERE.
What???? No Dead Milkmen???? Who the hell put this list together????
uhhh, no rage against the machine, im calling shenanigans
ok, so no Distillers. i can almost understand overlooking them since you can only include 50 albums…but the Dropkick Murphy’s not on this list?!? Come on, even Scorcese put them on his Departed soundtrack. with all their great songs they should’ve been on here.
Yes, What about the Dead Boys – Loud, Young and Snotty. I rememnber them when they were Frankenstein and playing in Cleveland during the mid 70′s. Great band and Stiv Bator was one of the best front men.
I don’t think any band should have more than one album on this list. Put their best album on and leave room for bands that deserve to be on it and didn’t get a shot. Either that or make it a Top 100. Actually both. Because there are at least fifty more that should be on there and aren’t. Where are the Minute Men? Where’s X? Where’s Anti Pasti? Where’s the Sub-Humans? Where are the UK Subs, The Dictators, the Melvins or the Meat Puppets, or about a dozen other bands I can think of? No Texas Bands? No Scratch Acid or Butthole Surfers? Their right! It is a piece of shit! Go buy a CBGB’s Shower Curtain and get back to the drawing board!
You’re right! Where are The Dead Boys? Not to mention Johnny Thunders. The New York Dolls and MC-5 aren’t exactly garage bands either . . . Where are they? Time for a newer better list guys.
I do believe this list was made to piss people off, and, viewing it at 4 in the morning with a headcold, it succeeded. Congratulations.
Blink 182 = bubble gum punk
Where’s Wendy O, Pennywise etc..
Add to the “MIA” bands:
Agnostic Front
The Weirdos
FEAR
Boomtown Rats
Plasmatics
DRI
Way too many “Pop-Punks”…was expecting Avril Levigne in the top 10.
since when is nirvana punk?
MIA – Naked Raygun

Who made this list? Where is Dead kennedys, meat puppets , SOD ,Suicidal Tendencies? Why is blink 182 and others on this list just because the drummer has a mohawk and tattoos dont really make the band PUNK.

Where are the Pixies?
Where are the Pixies?
Whom ever made up this list needs to repent.
Offspring? Green Day before London Calling? PLEASE!!!!!
How about SSD Control…Of course not.
This is flat out funny. Not a whole lot of “punk” on this list. A complete fucking moron with little knowledge of music in general, let alone punk, made this one. Nice job asshole.

dude
yall are whinney little bitc*s hahahaa
shut the hell up! who cares if yall dont like the list it is compiled of what the public thinks is the best punk albums not what you want it to be
stop being self centered and be happy that theres a top 50 punk list to begin with!
This list has to be a joke. This person doesn’t know punk. Green Day!? Offspring!? I’m surprised U2 is missing from the list. lol …NirVANA!???
Any punk list without Flesheaters or X is garbage.
lre
I would never argue about the “greatest” anything. Except maybe toilet paper–because I need a really soft tissue–but the Subhumans “Cradle to the Grave” smokes everything on this list, whether or not it’s the best…who really cares. Queen’s “Sheer Heart Attack” was a great punk rock song. So was XTC’s “Complicated Game.” Oh, and I used to get the best “snoopy” acid at the 7 Seconds shows in San Francisco.

Sorry about those multiple postings…it’s safe to say that my internet connection is NOT the best.
who made this fucking list, greenday, nirvana, blink-182, hey jerk off, the mentors, prima nina, the cramps, remeber what punk is, total anarchy for anything mainstream.
JOEY RAMONE, JOE STUTTER, SID VICIOUS ARE TURNING IN THEIR GRAVES.
Television for classic NY Punk. X for clssic LA punk! Wire for the best British punk band EVER! Put Bad Brains at 2 and take Green Day off the list (not once but TWICE!) I think it isn’t punk if it was played on mainstream radio (i.e. Blink 182, Rancid, etc.) Nirvana and Napalm Death are not punk. Pop and Metal. Gang of Four, Gang of Four, Gang of Four, Entertainment. Ministry was pretty crazy shit. And Sonic Youth rewrote music…….Hey, ya’ know what, this was a great publicity stunt. I had never heard of Kerrang until a friend told me about the list. Fuck all you guys!

NO:
GEN X
THE UNDEAD
BAUHAUS
VELVET UNDERGROUND
Green Day belongs on the list, but lower in the rankings thirties or forties.
The Offspring and Nirvana are GRUNGE take them off the list entirely. The Sex Pistols are Crap. They may have been the pioneers, but they were all attitude and no substance. Bottom line, Clash at #1 or the list is plain worthless.
The writer of the above list should be shot.
What!!!!!!!! no Avril Lavigne?
wow. a whole generation of music just got completely shat upon. someone who would compile such an innacurate list shouldnt be writing for a music blog or whatever this garbage waste of cyberspace is. you should be ashamed of yourself.

Jesus Christ. Um, no MC5? No Talking Heads? You’re going to tell me Dookie is better than London Calling and Ramones? Are you fucking serious? What about the Slits? If the Offspring are better than the Buzzcocks then Milli Vanilli is better than Bob Dylan and I’m a turkey with pink feathers. And the absence of The New York Dolls and The Pixies makes me want to stab myself in the vagina if only to distract myself from the pain. Oh, and I love Enema of the State, but in reality, CELEBRITY SKIN was a better record. And where are Bikini Kill and Television? This list is littered with british records, but very few New York records. And let’s face it, Sheena was a punk rocker eons before Sid
somewhere in this list should be Youth Brigade’s “Sound & Fury”
The people who made this list need to be lobotomized. It is the worst thing I have ever seen. It’s worse than everything that comes out of Tom Cruise’s mouth. It is a total piece of shit. What a mess.
if any of you were REALLY punk, why do you have a computer?
How about the Jam, XTC. If you’re gonna put the Mighty Mighty Bosstones on this list, I can think of a Dozen SKA band albulms that blow them out of the water.
what the fuck. huh? no suicidal tendencies no fukkin velvet underground? jesus but i just odnt know what to say to that. fuck that, fuck this.
punk is dead
Hmmm… what about 24-7 Spyz, Germs, DRI, Generation X, and even Tony James’ post Gen X cyberpunk band, Sigue Sigue Sputnik?
I saw 24-7 Spyz open for The Godfathers in 1989, and during their set, they blew out one of the stage monitor speakers. And when a band can do that, 1/2 way through a set, to me, that’s a sign of a killer show!!
In 1990 or 1991, I saw DRI play a show on the Clemson University campus, at a club called Edgar’s. And those guys were WAY MORE punk than Green Day are now.
Stop with your ‘omg punk iz ded’ comments. Just because there are a few crappy albums on some list a guy wrote up on the INTERNET, doesn’t mean punk is dead.
And I do not think The Sex Pistols should be number one. The Dead Kennedys should be, but that’s all matter of opinion, I guess.
And why is Americana by Offspring on that list? It is an okay album, but it doesn’t need to be there. And no, The Get-Up Kids shouldn’t be on there either.
I’m glad Crass are on there though… They should be much higher on the list, seeing as I think ‘Feeding of the 5000′ was the BEST punk album of the 70s.
And The Descendents, NOFX and Rancid are on there too so it ain’t a bad list. :/ It just happens to have a few albums on it that DEFINITELY should not be there, and is missing a few that DEFINITELY should, like ‘Death Church’ by Rudi Peni and ‘The Anger And The Truth’ by The Unseen, which is arguably one of the best punk albums of today. I know they get slagged off all the time, but I love ‘em anyway.
Oh, and some Lower Class Brats needs to be on there too…
And A.F.I.’s old shit isn’t actually that bad. They used to be a hardcore punk band, a really good one, too, so I’m glad they put one of their OLD records on there. If Decemberunderground had been put on there, I would have thrown a fit.
W… T… F… First of all… Ramones #1, not just cuz its my fav band, they’r pioneers of punk, they should get that recognition… Now, puting Green Day, Nirvana, Blink 182, Sublime, less than jake, The get up kids, AFI, etc. should not be on the list or any other list that has “punk” in it…some on the bands belong there but are very screwed up in the order they ar in, i mean Minor Threat at 17… assholes!, and they missed real good hardcore kickass punk bands like Bad Brains, Circle Jerks, Exploited, Suicidal Tendencies, DOA, Black Flag, Dead Boys, TSOL!!!, Wasted Youth, The Addicts, The Virus, Cheap Sex, Pennywise, Generation X, Oxymoron, Operation Ivy, Escorbuto, La Polla Records, 2 Minutos, 7 Seconds, Adolescents, Anti-Heroes… damn i could go on for days at this… Who ever made the list was watching disney chanel and hearing the theme songs on the shows… My God… If you were gonna put The Offspring Put it on the bottom of the list withe their first album The Offspring, or not at all in the list… and like one of you said, after 1985… plz… not much punk to look at after that… punk has been dead for years… but some people still live by the true meaning of punk… Oh and the guy that said Green Day rulez should be tied to a chair and had his penis cut off… fucking poser… if u wanna real 50 album punk list go to california, get some punks from the streets and ask them, not some gay dude from England… imma go now, h8 forums but this was important… btw dont miss the upcoming Documentary “American Hardcore”, thats for the real hcpunk era…
The problem with this list is the term punk! Everybody’s opinion of what it means to be punk is totally different. Also what you have to remember is that after the initial punk period of ’76-’78 punk split into many different groups. In America where the movement didn’t really hit the mainstream like it did in England it went underground in the 80′s and morphed into hardcore punk which stuck a bit more rigidly to the original musical template. Where as in England it had always been primarily an art-school movement and the post-punk bands (not to be confused with new-wave) were inspired by the freedom that punk gave them and used punk as a spring?board. Unfortunately I think now for a lot of modern so called ‘punk’ bands and skater kids the term ‘punk’ just equals teenage angst and dumb aggression. Punk was a philosophical musical movement, it was supposed to open up doors and break down boundaries. A lot of the bands to be influenced by hardcore are to conservative to be punk. American Idiot is Green Day’s most punk album because it challenged the norm! As for My Chemical Romance and the rest of these new up and coming bands being hailed as the “New Punk Explosion” by Kerrang! Well, I’m sorry but Lilly Allen is more punk not only musically but in her attitude as any of those bands!
the fact that everybody above is dissin green day is very very sad to me. not only did they revive punk, but DOOKIE is probably one of THE best punk albums ever. so catchy, so raw, so emotional. its insane. u can’t deny billie joes unbelievable front man skills…and even after amrican idiot they still are the most rockin band.. not to mention their look out stuff liek 39 smooth and kerplunk…unreal……

OMG, this whole debate just makes me realise how differently the Americans and the British see “Punk”. Ok so Kerrang is English, but Kerrang isn’t really an english mag. It’s dumb “rawk” etho’s are just too american. NME has always been the most influential musical mag, it comes from an art-school background as do most of our bands and that includes punk bands. A lot of these American punk bands are too elitist and keep within strict generic formulas. You lot don’t seem to understand the who philosophy of punk. Most Americans not only seem to be totally ignorant of the historical context of the genre, but also you don’t seem to have any understanding of the social and cultural impact of punk on popular music as a whole.

huh…
this list was probably made by some corperate bastards thinking if they put greenday at the top of the list, itll make them look good, since greendays pretty popular.
and, no offence to nirvana, i love nirvana, but why is it even on this list? nirvana is grunge, not punk.
idiots…………
nirvana not punk!!!!! sex pistols at #1???? ramones are the #1!!!!!…..and the best bands ever: green day, ramones, the clash, descendents, NOFX, rancid, pennywise, dropkick murphys, the distillers, dead kennedys, the misfits, AFI, the vandals, screeching weasel, black flag, social distortion, bad religion, gorilla biscuits, the casualities, the offspring, the unseen, bouncing souls, blink-182, the damned, and the sex pistols ….. but ramones at #1 … no sex pistols…….
who ever thinks the clash r one of the best r fukin deaf they cant even sing and us r disin greenday who r one of the most talented bands on the list coz they can actualy play instruments not just thrash shit like the sex pistols who wernt really musicians they just did craxy shit and fuck nofx and all the bands that have made like one good song in thier career coz they dont deserve to be on the list .
and just coz the punk of today doesnt sound like the punk of the 80s doesnt mean it aint punk coz punk would get borin if the sound didnt change and i think the punk bands of today could probli be even better than it was in the 80s but not that emo shit coz they sound like a bunch of girls singin in a faggy voice.
Excuse me?
“Dookie” is nowhere NEAR being better than ANYTHING The Clash, The Damned, Nirvana, Dead Kennedys, or The Ramones have made.
IT’s not even in the parking lot.
There are people on this list up set about these bullshit rankings but then saying why wasn’t Mighty Mighty Bosstones or The Jam on there. First of all The Jam is a Mod band and have no right on that list either. The Bosstones ARE NOT PUNK!!!
Fraser are you kidding? How old are you 16? Please Greenday is talented? You are obviously not a musican or a fan of decent music. Go ask someone who has a clue for some good bands for you to start listening to.

WHAT ABOUT THE DEAD BOYS, THE DICTATORS, NEW YORK DOLLS FUCK YOU AFI!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok, this list is fucked up. no list with the word punk in it should have AFI, blink 182, or nirvana on it. i am a huge green day fan, and even i think they were placed too high up. no way they beat the dead kennedys or the ramones. however, they didn’t kill punk, they brought it up from the fucking dead and gave it to a new generation. also, the guy who said that there are no good punk bands past 1985, i say this:
FUCK YOU!!!!!!
that WAS a “dumbshit comment” if i ever fuckin saw one.
At least Sex Pistols get number one, but Greenday in number two? What the fuck? Where’s The Wipers? Mission of Burma? Minutemen? Bikini Kill? Mudhoney? and a million other bands. How can you call Nevermind more punk than In Utero???? Raw Power at 18????????? Oh well…
green day should be number fukin 1 bitch
