100 songs clearly cover a number of bases. It’s fun seeing bands like Sic Alps on here, though it’s difficult to gauge what having the 90th best track of the year means. The songs in the upper decks (75-100) come off like miscellany — an understandable excuse to include dark horses. It doesn’t seem to start mattering much until you get significantly closer to 50. Still, miscellanies are often where the most interesting things happen, at least if you’re bored of lists with the same 40 bands on them, e.g. every list we’ve seen to this point. One complaint I’ll lodge: Where’s the metal? It was a good year for it, but not a single track shows up, not even by a pop-metal band like Torche. Then again, most of these lists seem to ignore that genre as much as they ignore country and (over) embrace hip-hop. But good to see Gang Gang Dance, Vivian Girls, Fuck Buttons, and the man pictured above. Fittingly — this is about single tracks — DFA makes a strong and repeat showing.

Does anyone else think that the way Pitchfork is presenting their year-end lists is a little obnoxious? The breaking down of the lists, making you check back every day for new info, etc… I know it’s to keep hype up and stuff, but I don’t know, it just seems off. It seems like part of it is so they can show their advertisers how WE HAD SO MANY FUGGIN’ HITS LAST DECEMBER!!! AND RIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!!! WE’RE AN ADVERTISER’S DREAM!!!!!!!!
The list is good though, I think. It’s cool to listen to the songs I hadn’t heard before. Tha Women song is fantastic.
Wow! Looks like I didn’t make any friends stating my opinion on Pitchfork’s list. I stand by my list and by my blog. Kings of Leon had the best album this year. I don’t give in to hype or what the critics are saying. I’m a guy who has listens to a ton of different music and the main requirement for me is that the song has to have a great melody. Otherwise, what’s the point? And by all means, if there is a band I need to know about for my blog, go there: http://diggingfordays.blogspot.com and let me know about who you are digging.
kings of leon?
shut the fuck up.
Banked. GhstClrs top 3 easy.
anyone care to share a link for the p4k top 100 from 2007? it was a much better list…..
I personally believe that if Fall Out Boy released their album a month earlier, they would have occupied the top thirteen spots on this list.
Crystal Stilts could have had a few songs in there, and if it were up to me their self-titled track would be song of the year. A giddy union of Duane Eddy, the Velvets, post-punk and shoegaze, with a killer lyric to boot.
Pretty good list. Pitchfork does what they do. Calling them pretentious is silly. People read pitchfork because it takes music seriously to the point of pretentiousness. That’s the draw.
I liked the list. Top five is very similar to the one I did for Bananafish media. But no portishead for me. I just could not get into that album, and I’m glad I skipped their set at Coachella.

my top ten tracks: 1-Portishead ‘Machine Gun’ 2-Flying Lotus ‘Comet Course’ 3-TVOTR-’DLZ’ 4-Fuck Buttons ‘Sweet Love for Planet Earth’ 5-M83 ‘Skin of the Night’ 6- Crystal Castles ‘Crimewave’ 7-Why? ‘The Hollows’ 8-Sascha Funke ‘Double Checked’ 9-Telepathe ‘Chromes On It’ 10- MGMT ‘Kids’
hey i just realized something
i was going to mention Jenny Lewis’ Acid Tongue should of made this list but…
does anyone not think that “Acid Tongue” sounds very similar, if not exactly like Bob Dylan’s “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues”???
i had just returned to this post to see if anyone commented or agreed with my post. i saw one person gave me a thumbs up, so i thought i’d give myself one as well…
only to discover that it was me who gave it to me in the first place.
*sigh*
my life sucks.
sigur ros at 71 is insane. top 10, easy. and, no conor oberst here….
I agree with most of the list, glad to see the Dodos made it. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Raise High the Roof Beam on there. They’re making some fun stuff…
so I was really bored and with all of these end of the year lists going on, I decided to make a giant mix of 2008 songs that I liked (they may not be the best songs, but their my favorites)…there are 365 songs, one for each day of the year…anyone interested in it, email me at csiers21@hotmail.com…
I’m sure I missed a lot of great songs from 2008 with this mix, but I couldn’t remember every album I listened to from 2008 (which is not exhaustive either)…also, there maybe some songs from 2007 on it because I was uncertain when it was actually released…
their number one song better blow my mind *goes to youtube*
it’s a bit boring. the trumpet part is cool, i guess. i probably will never hear it again.
whos number one song are you talking about, D?
i spent most of this year actually rediscovering great songs from 90′s and earlier. check out Brian Jonestown Massacre’s “Cabin Fever” (despite what you think of Anton)
Glad to see The Veronicas – “Untouched” on the list even if it is 87th. Good to know I’m not the only one who liked it. Pop song of the year by a landslide IMO.
The exclusion of Foals on any list disappoints me though.
The Veronicas? seriously? i didn’t think anyone outside of Australia had to be subjected to the Veronicas – and more to the point i didnt think anyone other than 12 year olds in Australia actually enjoyed them.
love 3 and 2 tho.
you know what would be super cool?
if a couple of the folks who were lucky enough to download Monster’s Zip,
would repost it so Monster does not have to…
bitte?
haha i remember last year how stereogum posted the zip and all hell broke loose…peple still manage to find it/compile one anyways
decent list; like last years better though…yuck at #1 though. Cut Copy shoudl have been first
i usually like (and agree with) Pitchfork – for example 90% of their choices in the Pitchfork 500 book – but honestly, I know 2008 wasn’t a great year for music (especially following 2007 which was a great year) but this list looks like it’s been written by teenage girls. there’s so much rubbish in here it almost outweighs the good selections.
Take it for what it is, songs Pitchfork liked. They’re people, they could have forgotten things, been contradictory (it is a consensus of a bunch of people, contradictory is expected), or whatever.
