Navigating NYC during the last hours of the year is always a nightmare, but this year we’ve got just the fix: Go see Clap Your Hands’ 12/31 show at Hammerstein Ballroom! Stereogum’s proud to co-present the show with Alec and the guys (and Bob Mould’s opening!); the new stuff won’t leave our heads, and CYHSY’s evolving into a bona fide beast on stage. Plus, it’s a warm place to be with good music, good tunes, and real people (not to get all Almost Famous on ya). And not only are we psyched that we now have New Year’s plans, but we’re inviting ten of you to join us! It’s the stuff indie-rock dreams are made of.

So we have five pairs of tickets to giveaway, and we’re gonna do it like always; to enter the contest, post a comment telling us (1) how you discovered the Clap (we blogged them before PFork, of course, but it’s cool if that’s where you found ‘em) and (2) naming your favorite tune. We’ll pick five winners at random on Wednesday 12/27 at 6PM EST, and the ten of you will have a solid story for the back-to-work NYE watercooler conversation. Here’s to ringing in the Oh-Seven! Good luck.

I first heard CYHSY on KEXP – I stream the station from work here in Dallas since our local stations are very saturated with really bad music – thank you Clear Channel! So after I heard CYHSY I immediately went to iTunes and bought their entire library. Their sound is so unique I immediately fell in musical love! They have serenaded me through many days.

To pick just one favorite song is like trying to choose a favorite between peanut butter and jelly! I guess if I have to name just one it is “In This Home on Ice”. Oh and peanut butter for the other one.

i kept reading good things, but hadn’t heard anything yet when a friend sent me a surprise package in the mail complete with the album. first time, i was intrigued. second time, even better. by the third time, i was in love.

i’d have to say my favorite is “upon this tidal wave of young blood.” ’cause it’s sex and drugs and rock and rock and roll.

When I went to visit my boyfriend, he surprised me with Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! tickets that he had gotten on eBay for the sold-out show. He had their album but I’d never heard them before. Went to an absolutely fantastic show (the Brunettes opened) — we stood right at the front of the stage and danced the entire time. Such a great time and one of my favorite shows ever.

my friend started playing them at the bar that my group of friends like to go to and we loved them instantly! a trip to new york to see them live would definately make my year…

i’m going with “in this home on ice”. or maybe “is this love?”

  6. My good friend told me to buy the album and listen, disclosing that I’m going to “cream my pants”. If I remember correctly I actually did after I hear “Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood”, my favorite CYHSY song.

  7. I discovered CYHSY on one of my many searches for new inspiring sounds in ’05. Saw them linked with The National, and Dr. Dog (two other very brilliant bands) gave em a listen, and fell head over heals…full on, crimson n’ clover, over and over, I fall everytime I hear them. Still have never seen them, and I’ve been aching for the Clap for a long while. (Ohh Ho Ho)

My favorite tune? It’s between Heavy Metal, and Clap Your Hands!. Heavy Metal is a tune that perks you up, no matter how trivial things may be. Plus, you can’t deny the urge to shimmy n shake when it strikes on.
Clap Your Hands!, well, Im a sucker for hand claps in any song. Hand claps, and organs, and those lyrics with infinite meanings, or obvious ones.

Ok, I’ve made up my mind, it’s Clap Your Hands! That song is so stunning, and all round my taste.

I was recommended CYHSY by the author of Questionable Content, who has a music recommendation section of his website. I checked out the album and it was pretty awesome.

  21. I found the greatness that is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah through an online community of which I also found Of Montreal, Architecture in Helsinki, and Animal Collective. I love Claps first album, and though I hate playing favorites I’d pick “Details of War,” over the other children. I can hardly wait for “Some Loud Thunder”. Here I come ’07!

  22. laura  |   Posted on Dec 20th, 2006

i discovered CYHSY from random pokings about the internet. NME.com especially had a link to some MP3s. they first came off like a cheery happy Radiohead with more disco bass and handclaps. NOT A BAD THING.

favorite song: “let the cool goddess rust away”

I discovered Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! through the wonderful Elise and her station Indie Pop Rocks!@Somafm while at work.

They had a unique sound that I had never heard before and Alec Ounsworth’s voice is fanatastic. It was also the first album I bought off of Itunes.

My favorite song is “Is This Home on Ice”- so far off of the new stuff its been “Satan Said Dance” which they’ve played at both shows I’ve them here in Chicago.

  24. so as lame as it may be i was watching TRL one day before class and some actor spit out the name Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. how could i resist checking out a band with a name like that. and ive been in love ever since..

fav song: gimme some salt…. although clap your hands! never fails either.

  25. well, i first heard of clap your hands say on itunes. I was looking at the playists from THE OFFICE, TELEVISION SERIES. Under jim it had “the skin of my yellow country teeth.” I thought that the vocals were interesting and decided to download a couple of their songs. I’d have to say that my favorite song is “tidal wave.” i like the acoustic rythem at the beginning.

First heard about CYHSY from a friend with good taste (who i think might have found them through here). Fovorite song has to be Satan Said Dance, I think my head hit the roof first time I heard it at the Khyber.

Treating the album with the respect it deserves – love every song.

I believe I heard about CYHSY on public radio… maybe it was a show about summer music festivals (?). The only band in recent memory that gave me wonderful chills upon listening! And of course the name is great; gives a nice happy vision. Never seen them live – hopefully a Buffalo date is in the future.

For my fave, I’d have to say “Details of the War” and “The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth” (can’t pick just one).

1st it was gimme some salt, then it was the skin of my yellow country teeth, after that it was Tidal wave of young blood. I proceeded to go through every song on the album being my favorite, and I’ve now landed on This home on ice.

My fat friend Wallace Brown turned me on to them. It took a while after I bought the album to really have time to listen to it. But I was really struck by their enerry and unique sound. It reminded me of early Talking Heads. That’s what really got me hooked.

gimme some tickets. I just moved to New York and have no plans for New Year’s eve.

I don’t remember the first time I heard CYHSY and I don’t really care. I know you all are trying to win free tickets, but am I the only one that thinks this band is pretty crummy? I don’t see anything interesting about taking the Talking Heads and sprinkling a little indie rock this-and-that on top. And the singer has one of the most irritating voices I’ve ever heard and I tend to like unusual, idiosyncratic singers. I saw a clip of the band on Conan courtesy of this blog, and it was so insanely bad, it actually pissed me off. Maybe they’re better now, but this band is a product of hype and circumstance and does not make interesting music to back it all up.

I first heard Clap your hands on the way to skate mini ramp. We always listen to music on the way to, and during skate sessions, and it of course has to be toe tapping good stuff. Clap your hands was a toe breaker for me the minute I heard them and they haven’t left my playlist, or stopped hurtin my toes ever since. Favorite song has to be Is this love.

  85. heard of them through an email by the national when they announced they were touring together.

fav tune is “the skin of my yellow country teeth”

    1. I heared Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! for the first time when I was going down the Mekong river on a boat on my way from Thailand to Laos. Just started my 10 month trip around the world. Met a girl from Australia and she made me listen to Skin of my yellow country teeth. Loved it and CYHSY followed me around the world..

    2. Favorite song: Skin of my yellow country teeth.

I heard Clap Your Hands Say Yeah for the first time listening to NPR on my way to class.

My favorite song is “Upon This Tidal Wave of Young Blood”. It’s so much fun to dance to! They all are!

My friend who lives in Brooklyn first told me about CYHSY after his friend saw them at Pianos. Once, when I was at my Brooklyn friend’s house, he walked me over to the big “CLAP YOUR HANDS SAY YEAH” graffiti on the now-famous warehouse. Actually, we were in Virgin Megastore in Times Square a month later, and “This Home On Ice” started to play on the speaker system, which was inexplicable and awesome. We stayed for the whole song, if I remember correctly.

My personal favorite song by CHYSY by far is “The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth”. The distorted melody and very fantastic drums intro is too much for me. When I first heard got the record, I must have listened to the intro for that song 30 times or so. I love those drums.

I first read about CYHSY in my college alumni magazine–I went to the same college as these guys! Saw them play in various bands at school. I downloaded their album and have been in love with it since. Favorite would have to be “Home on Ice.” Can’t wait for the new album.

  93. Paste Sampler from last year featuring “In This Home On Ice”

Fave song: “The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth”

all i know is that one day id never heard of them and the next they were my favorite band. im not going to question how i found out about them in case the magic goes away.

i am incredibly indecisive (ooh alliteration) but im going to have to go with yellow country teeth as my favorite song. or maybe is this love. and also satan said dance. and dont forget gimme some salt. aaaand ill quit while im ahead.

anyway, this is pretty much my only chance to see them unless theyre planning on coming to australia (which no one does).

    although, that could work too…

I heard CYHSY for the first time on KEXP in the early summer of ’05, they played “Let The Cool Goddess Melt Away”, I immediately ran out to buy the album; this was my summer playlist. It’s really hard for me to choose just one song, but if I really had to, I would say that “By The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth” is my favorite.

I found clap your hands say yeah thru a very sexy firefighter that lived down the hall from me in my old building. My favourite song would have to be The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth.

I was visiting different apartments when I was moving into NYC…one of the kids asked me if I had heard of CYHSY, which I had not, so I immediately fixed that when I got home. Took me about 3 listens before I fell in love, sometime around “The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth.”

And while my favorite track is probably that one or “In This Home on Ice,” my favorite line is undoubtedly, “camel dick, crucifix”

    Awful. Beautiful.
