Still one more day of clock-punching before we’re done with the oh six, but we know y’all have already deep thoughts about (and logged countless hours listening to) next year’s best albums. And though the “look ahead” is obligatory, the prospects are definitely hype-worthy. Some of the notables (album titles provided where possible):

The Shins – Wincing The Night Away
Is this the record to lose the indie kids? Is the album too “safe”? Regardless, this one will make ‘em this year’s Death Cab.
Bloc Party – A Weekend In The City
See above, replace “Death Cab” with “Coldplay.”
Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
Slated for April release, unless Merge gets click-happy again.
Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
Can someone say best OM ever? Expect this one on ’07 year-end lists. Totally amazing.
Deerhoof – Friend Opportunity
Same as above.
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah – Some Loud Thunder
Fridmann’s stamp is already evident on the tracks the Clap has “released.” Expect it to be another love/hate affair.
Menomena – Friend And Foe
If you aren’t paying attention to this Portland trio yet, get involved; this record is fucking stellar.
Courtney Love – How Dirty Girls Come Clean
The live clips we heard have us officially psyched. Even if she is a lunatic.
Ted Leo – Living With The Living
We’ve been digging the demos since before SXSW. T&G finally delivers the goods in March.
Marrdest Mouse – We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
After the sweep of Johnny-infused gigs, there still wasn’t clear consensus on the Modest upgrade. But seriously, how could Marr be anything but awesome?
!!! – Myth Takes
We’ve just started listening to this one. Safe to say “Heart Of Hearts” is gonna be a go-to track in hipster DJ sets from the LES to London.
Apostle Of Hustle – National Anthem Of Nowhere
Andrew Whiteman’s second full-length with Apostle sounds great so far.
Air – Pocket Symphony
No surprise, we’re loving it. More 10,000 Hz than Moon Safari, and Jarvis and Nigel join in the fun. They had us at “Air.”
Scarlett Johansson – Scarlett Sings Tom Waits
Who knew? Scarlett can sorta sing. But we love us some Tom Waits — and so we’re afraid of the end result. Very afraid.
Apples In Stereo – New Magnetic Wonder
Yep Roc puts their muscle behind the Colbert-cameoing R. Schneider’s latest.
Guns N’ Roses – Chinese Democracy
Yes, we’re still excited. No, we don’t actually expect it to come out in March.
Michael Jackson – TBD
Not exactly a man of his word, either.
Radiohead – TBD
Counting the days. Track their progress here.
Smashing Pumpkins – TBD
Counting the Jimmy Chamberlin MySpace blog posts. Track their progress here.
The Twilight Sad – TBD
The EP grabbed us, the live show did one better, and the band says neither hold up to the Peter Katis mixed debut full length, due next March.
Cat Power – TBD
Another record of covers, according to Venus. Better to put energies there than in schilling for diamonds.
Polyphonic Spree – The Fragile Army
This one’s political. And new costumes! Keep an eye on the blog.
Interpol – TBD
The band says album three sounds “great” so far.
LCD Soundsystem – Sound Of Silver
5,000 joggers can’t be wrong.
Travis Morrison – TBD
0.1? Fingers crossed…

And…
Rufus Wainwright – Release The Stars
Lauryn Hill – Khulami Phase
Patty Griffin – Children Running Through
Wilco – TBD
Spoon – TBD
The Postal Service – TBD
Metallica – TBD
Gnarls Barkley – TBD
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club – TBD
Duran Duran (Feat. JT)- TBD
Ryan Adams – The Complete Recordings (94 CD Set)

We know you list-happy listeners have already ranked your favorite records of 2007; we just ask that you help us separate the wheat from the chaff and tell us what YOU think will be the best of year next. (And what records we missed on the list.) To sweeten the pot: Guess ’07′s Gummy winning album and win everyone’s envious admiration! Good luck, gold ears.

  1. What’s TBD stand for? Don’t you mean TBC? Maybe I’m going mad now…

Shellac’s new album comes out next year, didn’t see that on your list.

Let’s not forget about that Brett Anderson jernt not too mention a new Super Furry Animals album.

  3. Your Biggest Fan  |   Posted on Dec 29th, 2006

Umm, no mention of Voxtrot? Aren’t they finally putting out an LP in 2007?

If so, that should be one of the most anticipated. I would have sex with their music if it were logistically possible.

  12. Hissing Fauna is amazing. New tour dates for OM are up now, they’re starting soon…

I think Dre’s new album is gonna be called “Detox”, and *should* be out next year.

  13. Overpaint  |   Posted on Dec 29th, 2006

I’d like to add The Frames “The Cost” (well, here’s hoping anyway) and James Yorkstown’s newest (just listen to it. Some of it has leaked and it’s ridiculously good. I’m amazed I hadn’t heard of him before)

  14. morgan  |   Posted on Dec 29th, 2006

Fiery Furnaces are recording in January, supposed to put something out by summer. Matt Friedberger was also talking about recording another solo (princess peter, astrologer to the stars)

I thought Jack White said someting about recording a new White Stripes album early in the year.

I thought it was Title TK?

I can’t believe this many people knew about Six Parts Seven.

the Black Keys are doing a collaboration with Danger Mouse and Ike turner.

  60. bjork, pj harvey, and tori amos are all releasing albums. final fantasy seems to have indicated another.

  61. Laura  |   Posted on Dec 31st, 2006

  63. A Kid  |   Posted on Dec 31st, 2006

    Oasis
    Portishead

and um of course the hottest news since yesterday…

    BLUR

  64. Sean  |   Posted on Dec 31st, 2006

Someone mentioned Metric, but their new album is only a year old so I doubt they’ll do anything new until Emily is done with her ‘side projects’.

Personally, I’m pretty excited to hear new Blur material with Graham back on board. Especially since Damon & Graham have both described it as the ‘final’ Blur album.

The new Shins & Bloc Party are really good. I don’t know what people are bitching about.

Jason: “Am I the only one excited for the new Art Brut album???”

Uh, no. It’s pretty much the ONLY album I’m really excited about for 2007.

  69. The Fall- Reformation Post TLC

  70. Jesse Malin’s “Glitter in the Gutter” will be my album of the year, even if I haven’t seen it so much as mentioned anywhere else.

  71. oh yeah-what the hell happened to the Hives?

  72. I know tribute albums aren’t the most popular type of music, but the new joni mitchell tribute with prince and elvis costello sounds great, and she’s working on her new cd apparently, so maybe that will be out in 07 which would be awesome. Also, not a cd, but the dlr vh rumors are becoming more numerous, so that might happen, and would be one of the best tours of the year, along with weird al this summer.

  73. the chilballads EP comes out in a few weeks

  74. Marin  |   Posted on Jan 2nd, 2007

I’m really looking forward to The Good, The Bad And The Queen. A new band formed by Damon Albarn and Paul Simonon. They will release their first album this year. In this perspective, I doubt there’ll be a new Blur album coming out soon (as suggested by ‘A Kid’ earlier)…

Also can’t wait for the new Kaiser Chiefs album!

  75. I forgot to mention Air Traffic. After their EP, I expect they’ll release a full album soon (hoping so too)!

  76. Wha?

  77. ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI KTHXBAI

Saw them live a few months ago and put on the best show of 2006, even though 80% of it was all new songs. The show all but puts their release as the most anticipated album of 2007.

Hopefully it DOES come out this year.

  78. I KNOW the new Sean NaNa is going to be my favorite. Only because I’ve heard it and it RULES. Now they just need a label.

  79. the only problem with this list is the comparison between bloc party and coldplay, as bloc party is definitely the superior of the two.
