The British music industry is ready to congratulate itself, yesterday releasing the list of nominations for this year’s BRIT Awards. (And the performers list is a vertitable who’s who of acts you love to be indifferent about, like Corrine Bailey Rae, Snow Patrol, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Take That, The Killers, Amy Winehouse — and, more awesomely, Scissor Sisters and Oasis). Do we care? Not at first — but after looking at the nominees, there’s some stuff worth noting. Full list and thoughts after the jump.

So, The BRITs did a few things right: Thom getting props for best male solo, Lily Allen picking up a BRIT-leading 4 noms, recognizing the Guillemots live show, and best of all, the BRITs picking up the Grammy slack by giving Chan a nod for International Female Artist (in between a bunch of dancing divas!). But that International Album list shows a lack of, erm, imagination. And international breakthrough nominee Orson? Who the fuck is Orson?

Orson’s a band from Cali, I think, that gets no play here in the US but had an inescapable pop song in the UK, “No Tomorrow.” That song’s a guilty pleasure of mine, I must admit, and the model-chicks seem to dig it.
>Amey Winehouse
you really should invest in a spell check program of some sort mr. amrit :)
You’re bound to be indifferent, and rightly so. The British music scene is currently plagued by Indie bands with their knowing winks and ‘realism’ in their lyrics. Hell, I still haven’t been involved with any of the stuff most of these bands talk about, nor do I know anyone who has. Realism, my arse.
Jarvis Cocker is God.
I was going to make a joke about how oasis should win an award for no reason, but then reality steps in and one ups me.
I’m sorry, The MasterCard British Album Award?
I just want to see the mid-teens stage school audience reaction if Dylan wins something.
Someone wants to give Jack Johnson an award for…being exceptional, I’m guessing??? I’m lost.
Come on Stereogum, how could you not show any love for this guy:

Has anyone ever had such a good time with Ali G?
It’s “Who’s who” not “Who’s Whom” and the Brit awards do not even matter.
