Not everyone (anyone) agreed with VH1′s 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs. Let’s see what happens when they talk about folks with guitars. Before we dig in, though, it’s helpful to understand what they’ve counted as “hard rock,” so keep in mind that the five-part television version was hosted by Bret Michaels and that Winger, along with Skid Row, Scorpions, Ratt, and, of course, Poison made the list. As did … Buckcherry.

Hard Rock is not Metal, Punk, Alt. Rock, Grunge, Post-Grunge, Prog-Rock, Blues Rock, or Southern Rock.
    1. Any song by Led Zep – you fill in the blank
    2. Any song by Black Sabbath
    3. Any song by AC/DC
    4. Valen Halen
    5. Aerosmith
    6. Kiss
    7. Alice Cooper

PS: Is Hair Metal considered Hard Rock, Metal or Aqua Net?

I can’t believe this list. I agree with some. Creed, Nirvana, Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Smashing Pumpkins? some of the worst songs and bands ever. what happened to queensryche? Eyes of a Stranger.

everyone who thinks Led Zeppelin should be number 1- THANK YOU
The 4 masterminds of Zeppelin were the godfathers, the founders of hard rock. They should have had all top 5 songs occupied. “Black Dog” was the song that got me hooked on rock and roll when I was a kid. And where is “Immigrant Song” and “Stairway”????????
ZZ Top’s “Tush” beat out “La Grange”?? Grange kicked the shit out of me when I was young. I also would have liked to see more Aerosmith (Sweet Emotion, Love in an Elevator), Sabbath, Queen (Fat Bottomed Girls, Bohemian Rhapsody), Boston. And where is Pink Floyd, and Rage Against the Machine?

Some songs that should have made the list:
    War PIgs- Black Sabbath
Just What I Needed- The Cars (good song, could be considered hard rock)
What about George Thorogood??? “Bad to the Bone” is pretty kick ass
    HENDRIX??????????
    Mississippi Queen- Mountain
    Jane- Jefferson Starship
    MAYBE a Police tune???
    Black Betty- Ram Jam
Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo- Rick Derringer
    YYZ- Rush
Maybe a Styx tune???? “Come Sail Away”???

where the fuck is sweet child of mine?! it should def be in the top 10, and so should hotel california!!

    this is a fuck list.

  6. Mr. Wonderful  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009 0

I was hoping Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well” would make the list, but it would probably confuse too many people who think of the pop version of the band after Peter Green left.

  7. zoolander  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009 0

no SOBER? TOOL? 15 years and still getting strong radio play. just sayin

  8. Doug  |   Posted on Jan 15th, 2009 +1

I was just trying to loko for the insipid list… there’s no point in getting angry about anything that’s submitted by The Clip Show Network or any of Viacom’s whore channels. It has about as much credibility as Fox News broadcasting news… so please, don’t get too angry that your favorite REAL HARD ROCK band made this list… cuz if it did, it would cause them to become popular and then your friend who does everything that the idiot box tells it to do will then become a ‘bandwagon fan’ of the band that you so righteously appreciate… how’s that for a long-winded sentence :P

  9. Get The Led Out  |   Posted on Jan 16th, 2009 0

Welcome to the Jungle re-defined hard rock in its era, easily top ten – not number 1. I can see some of the later stuff belonging on this list. For those of you that hate The White Stripes, I personally think that “Seven Nation Army” was a good hard rocking song, whether that belongs on the list in place of say: Number of the Beast is a definite no but it is a good song none the less. I like seeing Joan Jett’s reputation, I would have liked to see less Hair Metal. And I want everyone to know about the MC5′s Kick Out The Jams, great selection.

That being said there are some atrocities on this list.

    1. Search and Destroy is 49 and within ten spots above include Kid Rock and Poison. Search and Destroy is one of the songs that laid the foundation for Punk Rock, and it was an incredible song.

    2. Remove the following bands: Whitesnake, Europe, Warrant, and for fucks sake get rid of Poison. These bands are horrible carbon copies of each other and they all suck. The fact that these bands were on the list and bands like “The Velvet Underground,” “Sex Pistols,” “The Doors” who made all made a significant impact on music in general and made some great hard rock tunes.

    3. If there was one band that all these bands owe a great debt of gratitude to, they are not on the list: WHERE THE FUCK ARE THE ROLLING STONES? I know that some people believe hard rock is really loud guitars and people screaming into the microphones, but come on: Brown Sugar, Satisfaction, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, Gimmie Shelter, all these songs are really hard rockers and they hold up better than a lot of the shit that is on the list.

    4. Creed? Really? No Rage Against The Machine, no Pantera, very little Cream, but Creed belongs on the list?

    5. The 80s was not the greatest time for Rock And Roll like VH1 seems to think. In 1980 John Lennon was shot and Ronald Reagan was elected President. That’s not a good way to start a decade.

    Here is my top ten:

    10. Breaking The Law, Judas Priest
    9. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, AC/DC
    8. Welcome To The Jungle, Guns And Roses
    7. Search and Destory, Iggy Pop
    6. Highway Star, Deep Purple (Notice this is NOT Smoke on the water)
    5. Won’t Get Fooled Again, The Who
    4. Kashmir, Led Zeppelin
    3. Sweet Emotion, Aerosmith
    2. Paranoid, Black Sabbath
    1. Black Dog, Led Zeppelin

  10. jman   |   Posted on Jan 16th, 2009 0

so welcome to the jungle is now vh1′s best metal song and best hard rock song??? think vh1 might have some GnR fanboys working for them? they need to have a 100 greatest rap songs list so it can undeservabley win that too. maybe then vh1 would realize how retarded their lists are.

  11. Erika  |   Posted on Jan 16th, 2009 0

This list was an absolute joke, honestly.

Creed? Really? Evanescence, or however you spell the name? That’s not hard rock, it’s bullshit.

The Kinks’ You Really Got Me shouldn’t be in the list. It’s an absolute genius song, but I don’t consider it hard rock. It may have set the foundation for it, but it wasn’t ‘it.’

Welcome to the Jungle should not be number one. It’s a good song, but not the number one song of hardrock. I was expecting something better, (OH, you know, Iron Man maybe? Or a Led Zeppelin song?)

Jimi Hendrix had better hard rock songs. Hey Joe isn’t a hard rock song. (Purple Haze would have been better, VH1.)

The only things I was happy to see:
    Steppenwolf’s Born to Be Wild
    Heart’s Barracuda
    Alice in Chain’s Would?
Iron Maiden’s Run to the Hills (though it shouldn’t have been that high)

They might as well just have put The Spice Girls. The morons at VH1 wouldn’t care. They just want to waste hours of our time. I know you can’t please everyone, but you should at least try to please the majority. I didn’t even watch the whole thing. After seeing Evanescence, I didn’t feel comfortable watching the rest.

  12. Eric  |   Posted on Jan 16th, 2009 0

VH1 did an OK job with this list – I actually think they screwed up more on which songs they picked to represent the bands that were on the list, than they did of which bands should and shouldn’t be on the list.

Foreigner – Juke Box Hero over Hot Blooded
Alice in Chains – Man in the Box over Would?
Motley Crue – Kickstart My Heart over Dr. Feelgood
Van Halen – Panama over Runnin’ with the Devil
Blue Oyster Cult – Godzilla over Don’t Fear the Reaper

Mountain’s Mississippi Queen should’ve definitely made the list, I believe Highway Star by Deep Purple deserves to be here and Led Zeppelin’s Rock and Roll would be Top 5 easy for me. Overall though, not too bad of a job.

  13. jackie  |   Posted on Jan 17th, 2009 0

i seriosuly wouldn’t believe this list. EYE OF THE TIGER? WTF?
    and the final countdown? really???
and i really couldn’t believe they put WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE s number one. i know its a good song, but number one? no!
they had so many songs that were so horrible and that were by bands that in no way are hard rock, but when they did have a song by a decent band, it was some weird song no one’s heard of. and it was placed really high on the list
this was all just so disappointing.

  14. Jeffaroo  |   Posted on Jan 17th, 2009 0

I don’t even know where to start with this list of disapointment, what was there 1 led zeppelin song? kasimir? and one jimi hendrix song? hey joe, has brett heard more than one jimi hendrix song in his life? hey joe in my opinion doesn’t make jimi’s top 5. and how can they compare led zeppelin, ac/dc, jimi hendrix with smashing pumpkins marylin manson and Evanescence. if it were up to me this list would consist of about 5-9 different bands. the bands i’m thinking of got one or two songs on vh1′s list. And seriously “welcome to the jungle” is #1? personally, I would’ve picked led zeppelin’s Black dog, Rock ‘n’ Roll, when the levee breaks, The ocean, Misty mountain hop, maybe even stairway. and none of those songs even made top 100. apparently those songs aren’t as great as Creed, nirvana, korn, red hot chili peppers. Don’t get me wrong, those aren’t the only songs worthy of #1, but there are about 50 other songs more deserving than welcome to the jungle.

  15. j-rod  |   Posted on Jan 18th, 2009 0

you know eventually ppl need to just suck it up and deal with the fact that no one agrees on genres/music quality. everyone thinks everyone elses music tastes suck if its not exactly what they like so just dont watch the fucking lists and listen to ur music and let other ppl do the same. and honestly how many ppl here have actually been around for long enough to say what should be on here? in other words who lived through all this and has enough knowledge to even begin trying to classify music? no one. cause everyone says something different. so just deal with the fucking lists.

  16. tom  |   Posted on Jan 18th, 2009 0

This list is garbage. Gun’s and roses number 1…. are you kidding me. Led Zeppelin should be number 1, they basically invented hard rock and made it popular. This list is all hair metal and glam rock, which is mostly crap to begin with… the only reason most of these bands are on the list is because they are washed up and came on the show to comment so vh1 payed them back with a spot on the list. I think the fact that more then half these bands were only relevant for a few years, should disregard their impact on music.

  17. hardrockjunkie  |   Posted on Jan 18th, 2009 0

this is a rreeeaaaaalllllly bullshit list. nirvana sucks ass. and NO STAIRWAY????

  18. Lou  |   Posted on Jan 18th, 2009 0

Are you serious. Eorope, Poison and about 30 other ridiculous bands. Y0ou gotta be kidding me. Back in the Saddle or Sweet Emotion didn’t make the list.. WHat a joke this list is.

  19. -=JtG=-  |   Posted on Jan 18th, 2009 0

Yeah Back In Black should have been #1………..NOT welcome to the jungle
    was really disappointed
Nirvana??………….wow some things on this list just made me drop my jaw like WAHHH

  20. Double D  |   Posted on Jan 19th, 2009 0

what the hell, Kiss shouldn’t even be on the damn list. they hella sold out in the late 70′s. and fuck all the haters out there. GNR is a great fucking band. Welcomr to the Jungle is like their best song and it deserves to be in the top 3. and skid row does have some good heavy hits like slave to the grind. that should be in there instead of fuckin 18 and life. vh1 fucked up big time but what can you expect. they’re like Mtv, lookin out for the glam and showin no props for the good and the heavy. and for all the mother fuckers who don’t agree, then suck a dick and shut the fuck up.

    Double D outski

brett micheals is the biggest douche in the universe

    • Cory from Canada!  |   Posted on Jan 19th, 2009 0

Should of had a top 50 Rush songs. The best band alive with by far the most albums sold out of any on this list, this being because they left out a small band you might have heard of…. The Rolling Stones!
Tom Sawyer is top 10 easy. Should have been Ironman for Sabbath in top 10.
Just my 2 cents. Not the best list, but some people smoke alot of crack too! :)

  22. Xnavyman  |   Posted on Jan 24th, 2009 0

How the hell did Stairway to Heaven not even make the list???? Oh and Cory from Canada!, in the immortal words of the great Dennis Leary “I would never do a drug named after a part of my ass!!!!!”

  23. kevin  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2009 0

I new I was wasting my time looking at this. To have Alice In Chains at the number 88 spot is a slap in the face. Who comes up with this stuff? Maybe Axle Rose haha. Top ten 1. Black Sabbath – “Paranoid” 2. Metallica “One” 3. Pink Floyd “Brain Damage/Eclipse 4. Alice In Chains “Rooster” (the song speeks volums) 5. Jimi Hendrix “Hey Joy”

  24. Cupcake  |   Posted on Jan 26th, 2009 0

Where is Nobody’s Perfect by Hannah Montana? This list sucks

  25. jim  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2009 0

i agree with most ppl on here. when i watched it, i was highly disappointed. i mean, how in the hell does welcome to the jungle beat out songs like paranoid, enter sandman, whole lotta love and back in black? it was total bs and i have completely lost all faith in these vh1 classics list. john bonham would turn over in his grave if he found out gnr beat zeppelin. btw jimmy page would kick the shit outta slash any day of the week

  26. A Black Man  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2009 0

so pretty much this is biggest piece of shit list ive ever seen. metallica deserves about the top 20 spots

  27. Haylie  |   Posted on Feb 6th, 2009 0

I didnt get to see the last episode, so I just looked for it on the internet… and what did I find? Guns N’ Roses – Welcome to the F*CKING Jungle as the #1. OK, let me chill… WhAaAaAT??!!! I mean, the song is really good, but its not right that GNR beats Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath or AC/DC… Also, Bon Jovi?? Buckcherry??? :O They didnt even picked the best Clash song, and kept IRON MAN out of the list… Shame on you VH1, shame on you!! I’m extremely dissapointed… :S

  28. dylan  |   Posted on Feb 9th, 2009 0

This list does not even count because it doesnt have any Rage Against the Machine or Tool.
    horrible

  29. Ringo  |   Posted on Feb 14th, 2009 0

Impossible…VH1 should NOT make lists anymore…
To those that do not know the meaning of hard rock, hard rock is anything that sounds hard, so punk, grunge, and metal are appropriate for the list. So songs like “Hey Joe”, and “You Really Got Me” do not belong on the list.

“Welcome To The Jungle” at #1?!?!?! Vh1 is too pop-ish. The 80′s was the worst decade for hard rock (behind the ’00′s). Welcome to the JUngle was a great song and is top 10 material, but NOT number one! Vh1 needs to stop thinking about 80′s hair metal and needs to start thinking about GOOD music.

Why is it that each band only gets 1-2 songs on the list?! If they did that, Led Zeppelin would have, like 6 songs on the list (like it should).

Why is it that on their list of the 100 best songs of the 90′s, “Enter Sandman” ranked behind “Smells Like Teen Spirit”, but on this list, apparently now Enter Sandman is BETTER?

Vh1 needs to stop hosting these lists

  30. KILLER_BOB  |   Posted on Feb 14th, 2009 0

This was voted by the public on Vh1′s website… and all of these songs are cliche and all, every band here pretty much has their best known song make it, with a few exceptions, though I’m glad Megadeth fans pulled through not to have Symphony For Destruction make it. The artist I have the most problem with, though, is Iron Maiden, I just hate Run To The Hills, Hallowed Be Thy Name should’ve made it instead. It’s decent considering it’s from VH1, but horrible considering it’s from us.

  31. Bruh flunk all the bulk shelf man it’s all about Looks That Kill by Motley Crue…

  32. frankdux  |   Posted on Feb 16th, 2009 0

Dokken? Rainbow? Europe? Who made this list, Kip Winger? How in the hell are the Sex Pistols not on here? Purple Haze, One by Metallica, Marquee Moon by Television, Stairway to Heaven all left off for such gems as Higher by Creed. Give me a break.
I was pleasantly surprised that the White Stripes, Living Colour and The Stooges made this list (although they were underrated). Hey VH1, having big hair does not mean you rock.

  33. riley  |   Posted on Feb 16th, 2009 0

since when when has creed and evanesenceever been hard rock,or even rock

  34. 1:stairway to heaven
    2:purple haze
    Not to over-rate hendrix but….

  35. george  |   Posted on Feb 18th, 2009 0

yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh guns & roses is the best band of this fucking world
    fuck you jethro tull

  36. cameo  |   Posted on Feb 22nd, 2009 0

As ecstatic as i am that Guns N’ Roses is #1 I do agree that Led Zeppelin probably should have been number one, seeing as how they basically invented the concept of hard rock, in and of itself. Personally, I like Immigrant Song, but you know..Whole Lotta Love would be suitable as well. My top five:

    1) Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin
    2) Welcome to the Jungle – Guns N’ Roses
    3) You Shook Me All Night Long – AC/DC
    4) Walk This Way – Aerosmith
    5) Crazy Train, maybe, or Paranoid..not sure

I am dismayed at some of the comments against GNR on here. They without question rank next to Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Aerosmith as the best hard rock bands ever. Without question. Anyone who disagrees is clearly misled. I’m not even gonna argue- there is nothing to argue about. You know, besides the fact that no one really cares about your or my opinions anyways. People are gonna think what they’re gonna thinks so whatever. But, nonetheless, there were some disappointments on the list. Kid Rock and Jethro Tull on the list = complete and epic fail.

  37. Foya  |   Posted on Feb 25th, 2009 0

That list is bullshit. welcome to the jungle #1? seriously no guns n roses songs should have even been on the list seriously. and how bout more acdc? you shook me all night ling, hells bells, thunderstruck and highway to hell should have definately been there. also tnt and its a long way to the top.

  38. Alex  |   Posted on Feb 26th, 2009 0

C’mon, For the last elections before this one, people had chosen the worst candidate out of just two options. Imagine to choose out of thousands of songs.
I do believe it´s a safe list, They had something for everybody. kudos for VH1.
Imagine that it was just to choose which GNR song is the tops out of 3. Paradise, Welcome, September. I would chose Paradise and I bet I would get tons of hate mail.
Impossible is to have everybody happy.

  39. clancy kelly  |   Posted on Feb 26th, 2009 0

No Soundgarden, with Jesus Christ Pose or Room a Thousand Years Wide? And no Tool??!! Truly a VH1 fan list, this pile of crap.

And You Shook Me All Night Long is AC/DC’s best song.

  40. Dr. No  |   Posted on Feb 28th, 2009 0

and rolling stones?, this is the best list of the history

  41. justin  |   Posted on Feb 28th, 2009 0

THIS IS BULL SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck GnR. i think this list is fucked up.

  42. Gabriel Corindoa  |   Posted on Feb 28th, 2009 0

Holy crap, why is Painkiller not on there? That’s totally bogus dude, best drum solo ever!!

  43. Kruge  |   Posted on Feb 28th, 2009 0

Everyone whining about the list should take a chill pill, remember opinions are like assholes everyone has one. Was the list perfect…no, did it totally suck…no, are there bands that should not be on it…probably but who really cares.

  44. I was a Rock DJ for the span of most of this list, as well as a Musicologist and Musician (both Rock and Balladeer). Ever notice that the best ballads were done by the hardest Rock Bands?

What caused me to look up the website and the list is the obvious failings. As a music programmer, my principle job was to seek out the music that every fan could agree on as being “the best”. About 30 of the above songs do not belong on the list. At least 30 songs that should be on the list are missing. Many of the above comments are bang-on, although many of the above suggestions are also only applicable to a small (although very vocal) minority.

However, that being said, I’m delighted that I came to the website because the comments I’ve read evoked more joy than I’ve felt for a very long time.

Thank you VH-1 for your many and obvious errors. ( LMAO)

    Robert Genis

  45. anthony  |   Posted on Feb 28th, 2009 0

I like all of these songs but the ordering is horrible…..

well. i have wasted almost the same amount of time reading most of these inane messages as i did watching this vh1 program. while i do not agree at all with the final list, i have read that people wanted “soundgarden” or “tool”. i mean cum on, really? wtf. yes there are 500 songs that belong on this list, and not one of them are “soundgarden” or “tool”, not in the top 1000. the top 200 greatest hard rock songs, imho, would be comprised of less than 30 bands, and not one of them has put out an ALBUM in the last decade. call me an old fart, but the new shit out right now or recently can’t blow out a fart compared to the ’60′s, ’70′s or early ’80′s hard rock. its that simple. the last really good year for hard rock would have been ’86 or ’87. the last years of hard rock. “vivid”, “appetite for distruction”, “electric”, amazing music. i cant think of decent hard rock since then. sure there might have been a RECORD here or there, but nothing worth listening to twice. my god, i have gone through atleast 6 copies of zep4. bickering over what band belongs or doesn’t, or this band had a better song than that one, is a useless waste of energy.

i do agree with those that think that vh1′s list is a commercial for those stupid “i have no talent” video games. it doesn’t take a columbo to figure that one out.

anyway, for what it’s worth, that’s my 2 cents

  47. ya  |   Posted on Mar 1st, 2009 0

this is pure and utter shite

  48. Disappointed  |   Posted on Mar 1st, 2009 0

Wow, Welcome to the jungle. I was atleast expecting Led Zeppelin to be no. 1, I mean come on vh1 what has gotten in to you.

  49. toprock  |   Posted on Mar 1st, 2009 0

    where is nirvana

  50. WB  |   Posted on Mar 2nd, 2009 0

The Beatles – Helter Skelter should have been on this list!

Anything by GnR (while great rock music) shouldn’t have been number 1 over anything by Queen, The Who, AC/DC, Black Sabbath or Led Zepplin

Creed, Evanesence, Buckcherry, Poison, etc had no right being on this list

  51. Ericketeer  |   Posted on Mar 2nd, 2009 0

The only use I’ve ever found for this kind of lists is to check which songs I’m missing in my library.

As an extra I really enjoy how some people react because his/her personal best song ever, is not in the list or number one …

  52. robert  |   Posted on Mar 2nd, 2009 0

and where is Kittie hahahaha??? where is Static X Slipknot system of a Down????
katy Perry !!!!!!!! this list sucks !!!! VH1 try to re-unite all the fucking old gays in a box and put it together but, Grunge vs glam rock — indie vs american rock.. don’t forget it this list sucks for me i love 1990′s until now 1950-1989 sucksssssssss……….. saludos idiotas

  53. No, I didn’t agree with everything on the list, but I’m just one person & there’s a couple billion more around me that don’t necessarily like the same tunes. I think there were way better songs by some bands that should’ve been included instead of what was used. But hey, maybe next time.
What some people need to realize is that there is a TON of music out there THAT DOES FIT THE PROFILE!! No, you may not agree, but the people that made the list feel that they knew what they were doing (ok I realize that most people commenting don’t agree but jeez, stop whining already!!)
Yes, alot of the songs are featured on Guitar Hero (1, 2 & 3) and Rock Band ……. obviously there’s people still interested in these songs & bands AND THAT’S WHY THE MAKERS INCLUDED THEM!! Popularity and marketing are the big factors, like AC/DC says “MONEY TALKS” ;) :P

    And as a die-hard GN’R fan, I just gotta say ~ WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!

  54. Funkster  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2009 0

Those you say that people didn’t made this list are right !! VH! did . Beside a couple of groups, almost no one had 2 songs in the top 100. Why ? Because the emphasis is on the group, the fame , the glory & the breakdown not the actual song ! VH1 just wants the little story on the group , otherwise , they would have put more than 2 Led Zep songs, more Priest & Sabbath songs but they would have ran out of stories so they put some 1-hit wonder/non worthy song instead !!

  55. fuk this list!! Rage Against the machine should definitly be on this shitty list..like township rebellion, bulls on parade ,testify, killing in the name of and many more

  56. satansdisciple  |   Posted on Mar 6th, 2009 0

this is ABSOLUTE shit!!!! i mean, c’mon!!!! free bird beqaten by gay GNR????? fuck that shit!!! where the hell is stairway to heaven??? (i know its a little cliche but its WAYY better than welcome to the jugle) i thought VH1 was cool… now no more… wat a waste

  57. Nevo Sheffi  |   Posted on Mar 6th, 2009 0

How if Steppenwolf – born to be wild not here?
iron man is another wierd miss in the list. and ofc stairway to heaven

heal but atleast Bring Me To Life is here! amazing song ehh…… :O

  58. bite-mevh1  |   Posted on Mar 7th, 2009 0

    1-Immigrant Song Lz
    2-Back in Black -ACdc
    3-Iron Man- Black Sabbath
    4-Bohemian rapsody – queen
    5- Demolicion – Los saicos

  59. Nort51  |   Posted on Mar 7th, 2009 0

this list was pretty bad. WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE!?! SERIOUSLY!?!? To quote Jack Black from School of Rock…”There used to be a way to stick it to the man, it was called Rock and Roll. But no, the man had to ruin that too, with a little thing called MTV!”

  60. Fierless  |   Posted on Mar 7th, 2009 0

VH1, how can i even start other tha to say what happened? That was probably one of the worst top 100 hard rock songs list ever. You are telling me that Dazed and Confused, Midnight Rambler, When the Levee Breaks, Purple Haze, Wish You Were Here, Who Are You, Lithium, Give Me Shelter aren’t even in the top 100? And that’s just to name a few. What’s even worse is you didn’t even include THE ROLLING STONES!!! That’s a sin. The Rock Gods will be after you for that one. No Pink Floyd? And only two Led Zepplin songs whats that? They were and still are the pacesetters. In fact, you should have put the whole Mothership album in there. Welcome to the Jungle for #1 really? Great job! I’m only 17 years old and this music isn’t even my generation, I’m sure I could have made a better 100 list myself.

  61. DaShark  |   Posted on Mar 7th, 2009 0

WTF? No Cheap Trick? Dream Police, Surrender, She’s Tight, Go For the Throat, Elo Kiddies, Heaven Tonight, Gonna Raise Hell, Big Eyes, Stiff Competition, He’s A Whore, California Man, Just Got Back, Baby Loves To Rock (ripped off by Poison in Talk Dirty To Me) … I could list a dozen more songs, better than 75% of these songs.
    GMAFB VH1!

  62. dazza  |   Posted on Mar 8th, 2009 0

whoever came up with this list was smacked off there tits.i mean a def leppard song higher than any iron maiden song?. come on what about number of the beast, hallowed by thy name or the trooper.this list sucks

  63. Jonathan Murillo Valdez  |   Posted on Mar 8th, 2009 0

Paranoid have to be in the first place, then Metallica, next Nirvana and finally ac/dc, I think that song of led zeppelin is a crap because it doesn´t have godd riffs and solos, and i hate guns and roses, the best band for me is METALLICA AND KIRK HAMMETT IS THE BEST GUITAR PLAYER EVER.

  64. Jack  |   Posted on Mar 8th, 2009 0

    This list is shit.

  65. PIEDRON  |   Posted on Mar 8th, 2009 0

alice in chains 88???? vh1 sucks my fuckin ballsssssssss

  66. Fearsome  |   Posted on Mar 8th, 2009 0

yes, this list sucks. but when you think about it, what list of songs does not? that’s what i hate about people saying “so and so is the best of this” when it’s just something of opinion. best actors, singers, comedians, so on, it’s all opinion of whats the best. in my opinion, every way of trying to keep track of who’s the greatest has failed miserably. trying track how good an artist is by top 100 lists, CD sales, Grammies won, whether or not they are in the hall of fame, or even number of fans is pointless. you should just listen to a song and not judge it by radio play or those other things. so please, stop complaining about this list. Sure, vh1 left out a massive amount of music, but they are not the final authority of what’s a good song or not, no matter how much they think they are.
btw, everyone has their definition of what hard rock is. some will only accept death metal as hard rock, others are willing to go a bit softer. it seems vh1 was willing to push it really far though.
all and all, this show was more entertaining than informative, so be entertained. and never ever take a list like this as law.

  67. Any list that has Smoke on the Water and not Highway Star is terrible. Seriously, Highway Star is better in every conceivable way. Having the easiest riff to play on a guitar does not make a song great. But, what the hell, this list is bullshit anyway. Liked the inclusion of Cult of Personality and Love Removal Machine, though. These lists always forget that it’s a search for the GREATEST, not the most popular. Won’t Get Fooled Again and My Generation are good songs, make no mistake, but there is no Who song in existence better than “The Real Me” off of Quadrophenia, which is arguably the best bass song ever. Also would’ve liked to have seen some QoTSA (No One Knows? Fucking Buckcherry made this list!) and a Metallica song that ISN’T OFF THE BLACK ALBUM. Seriously, is …And Justice For All too much to ask? Fuck Bret Michaels, and fuck VH1.

  68. Robbie  |   Posted on Mar 9th, 2009 0

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
    fail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I do love most of these songs.
    Good songs yes.
Just not the greatest HARD ROCK (most important part of the title) songs!!
Some good hard rock songs there but they probably could have done a whole lot better.

  69. VH1SUCKS  |   Posted on Mar 9th, 2009 0

100 Greatest Hard Rock Songs…….in no particular order….right?
    right???????????????????
    RIGHT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  70. randall  |   Posted on Mar 9th, 2009 0

  72. hackdaddy  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2009 0

LIAR are you joking what a terrible song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  73. Dude  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2009 0

I’m sorry, but I thought that a LOT of the songs on the countdown were in the right place. The Creed song was near the bottom (good), there were a lot of under-rated but good songs on the countdown (such as I BELIEVE IN A THING CALLED LOVE) (good) and they had Andrew WK on the countdown. But heres the thing: here are my top 10:
    1. Rock out-Motorhead
    2. Party Hard-Andrew WK
    3. Set to Fail-Lamb of God
    4. Give it All-Rise Against
    5. Painkiller-Judas Priest
    6. My Apocalypse-Metallica
    7. Question!-System of a Down
    8. Psychosocial-Slipknot
    9. Sweating Bullets-Megadeth
    10. For Those About To Rock-AC/DC

    compared to THEIR top 10:
    1. Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N’ Roses
    2. Back in Black-AC/DC
    3. Whole Lotta Love-Led Zeppelin
    4. Paranoid-Black Sabbath
    5. Enter Sandman-Metallica (that one is agreeable)
    6. Won’t Get Fooled Again-The Who
    7. Smells Like Teen Spirit-Nirvana
    8. Walk This Way-Aerosmith
    9. Runnin’ With the Devil-Van Halen
    10. Ace of Spades-Motorhead

Now, keep in mind…my list was of my current favorites, not THE GREATEST!!! There also, which pissed me off, were no System of a Down or Slipknot and only 1 Metallica song on the countdown. But the main thing that pissed me off was that in the top ten, they had some of the right bands, but not the right songs by them.
    1. Correct Song For Artist
    2. Correct Song For Artist
    3. Stairway to Heaven
    4. Iron Man
    5. Correct Song For Artist
    6. Baba O’ Reily (Teenage Wasteland)
    7. Correct Song For Artist
    8. Correct Song For Artist
    9. Panama
    10. Correct Song For Artist

    One More Thing:
My Top 10 GREATEST not current favorites
    1. Free Bird-Lynyrd Skynyrd (NOT 26!)
    2. Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin
    3. Iron Man-Black Sabbath
    4. Rock and Roll All Night-Kiss
    5. Back in Black-AC/DC
    6. Welcome to the Jungle-Guns N’ Roses
    7. Enter Sandman-Metallica
    8. Ace of Spades-Motorhead
    9. School’s Out-Alice Cooper
    10. Break on Through (to the other side)-The Doors

YES! I put The Doors on there!

  74. Dude  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2009 0

the best bass song ever is Roundabout by Yes even though they’re not hard rock

  75. Dude  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2009 0

Unlike my last post, this one will be short:
    HAPPY TO SEE:
    THE DARKNESS
    ANDREW WK
    AC/DC
    LED ZEPPELIN
    MEGADETH
    KID ROCK (kind of)
    KORN
    ANTHRAX
    METALLICA

  76. EL DIABLO  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2009 0

HELTER SKELTER , STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN , PARADISE CITY , ONE, MASTER OF PUPPETS , BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY , IRONMAN , THE NUMBER OF THE BEAST. WHERE THE HELL ARE THESE GREAT SONGS ?????

  77. Angeli77a  |   Posted on Mar 13th, 2009 0

  78. Laura78  |   Posted on Mar 14th, 2009 0

So you have The Clash and The Stooges but… what about The Sex Pistols and The Misfits?????
Love Guns nad Roses but AC\DC deserves the 1st place
And…!!! Why don’t you make an Alternative Rock list … some of these bands will fit better in there instead of putting them along with Ozzy, Bruce and all the Hard Rock Gods…!
Should make a new version now

  79. ASk  |   Posted on Mar 14th, 2009 0

    Why guns and roses…?
    fuck you

  80. SRH  |   Posted on Mar 14th, 2009 0

I agree with what many of you said. But I have to ask, again where is Pink Floyd, so underrated. There should have been more Rush too.

  81. Tara Corpuz  |   Posted on Mar 15th, 2009 0

How in the HELL did Zeppelin and AC/DC only get 2 songs each???!!!!!

Who in their right mind would put in White Stripes and Green Day yet not give Led Zeppelin the respect that it completely deserves.

    Un-freaking-believable.

  82. Miguel  |   Posted on Mar 16th, 2009 0

No no NO no NO! what the hell happening with music I mean ime 12 years old y born in 1995 in Mexico in thath time the few bands that were good in thath time Anthrax Marylin Manson Korn Pantera ¡METALICA! were to heavy to me to hear i cant imagine a 3 year old listening Marylin Manson and any way I now better Music dont they now the 4 M gratest IRON MAIDEN BLACK SABATH METALICA an lastly and not my favorite JUDAS PRIEST now im very upset because y evry tuesdey at 10:00 at night i neaded tu be awake untill i watch al the 100 freaking songs that they use only for comersial buisnes and to help somo bands out of stock and meybe they just do this list for promoving a new fucking reality were ZZTop loocks for love. I dont now i just say thath we need a good grup now a good band after Green Day and Red Hot Chilli Pepers that are sheet so i dont know I think this top is a SSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTTT

  83. Geronimo Maneiro  |   Posted on Mar 16th, 2009 0

When I saw the first episode I think: ?there must be three song of Guns N? Roses at least? then I did search the list on the internet and realise that ?Welcome to the jungle? of Guns N? Roses is number 1. It was a surprise because I never expected that song woulb be the #1 because I know that song rocks the United States but I think #1 deserves to ?Paradise City?. I think it was a fucking surprise to Brett Michaels, yeah the same guy who did not want Slash on his band because of his clothes so fuck you Poison. Slash rules !!!!

  84. john  |   Posted on Mar 17th, 2009 0

For some of u, this is a Hard Rock list, not a Heavy Metal list…. and also remember that GNR is a Hard Rock band. So like it or not, the people voted them.

  85. darkmakim  |   Posted on Mar 18th, 2009 0

    you are an idiot

  86. Jeff  |   Posted on Mar 19th, 2009 0

GNR #1????? That ruined it for me alone. I mean alot of the rest can be argued from different angles……..but not to have a Led Zeppelin song as #1 is a travesty. Zeppelin are the kings of hard rock……..guys like Hendrix, Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabath, AC/DC, Metalica, should cover all the top 10 alone. Some of those guys need more than 1 song in the top ten. GNR might break into the top 20, but #1????? Give me a break! The pioneers should rule the top 10.

  87. hi hi hi  |   Posted on Mar 19th, 2009 0

I don’t fucking agree on this top 100, it really sucks at all! I mean I fucking understand that it’s a about hard rock songs, but, please!! dont lie yourselves just in order to make polemic some of them dont really rock like….jaja dont make me laught you know which ones, and I’m not gona name anyone of them so as not to crack them, you really shouldn’t have presented that top ’cause it’s not pop music which is easy to make a top with that shit, but also it’s hard rock I mean the best music worldwide that joins many a different emotions or feelings, and I fucking bet you’ll never please any hardrock fan in the world. by the way *DUDE AT* you’re an idiot and all the ones who made a top in these comments. fuck yourselves…!

  88. Randy  |   Posted on Mar 19th, 2009 0

AC/DC and Black Sabbath put on the same list as Creed? this is bullshit

  89. KateB1019  |   Posted on Mar 20th, 2009 0

All of you people are total douche bags. These songs are classics
and NOTICE HOW ITS NOT– BEST 100 DEATH METAL SONGS
idiots. So stop bashing these songs which all deserve their spots.
Jesus. Plus, you cant change it, so instead if complaining, just get over yourselves. The majority of people love these songs. Duh.

  90. jane  |   Posted on Mar 20th, 2009 0

okay wowowowow so much to say…….

    1) 90% of this list is 80′s hair metal bands
    (not surprising considering the host)
    2) THE HOST!!! Bret Micheals is one of the biggest sell outs in my opinion! like you’ve all seen the commercials for rock of love!! ahh hes so disgusting!
    3) I know i speak for most of you (at least the sane ones) when i say that there is a definite lack in Hendrix, Zeppelin, Cream, Aerosmith, Foghat, AC/DC, The Who, and Queen…. COME ON THEY LIKE MADE A WHOLE NEW MEANING FOR HARD ROCK!!!!
4)WHERE THE HELL is the Stones!!! and Pink Floyd!!!! and the Doors!!!?????????????? my god the stones like were one of the origanals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats a fricken sin right there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    5) Eveneasence really? y would anyone vote for that!
6)ONE OF THE WORST LISTS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we should boycott vh1 just for this list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  96. metal thrashing mad  |   Posted on Mar 28th, 2009 0

My top 10 of hard rock:

    1.- Back In Black – AC/DC
    2.- Rock ‘n’ Roll – Led Zeppelin
    3.- Rock Bottom – UFO
4.- Long Live Rock ‘n’ Roll – Rainbow
    5.- Dream On – Aerosmith
6.- Runnin’ With the Devil – Van Halen
7.- Detroit Rock City – Kiss
8.- Let it Roll – UFO
    9.- Lovedrive – Scorpions
    10.- Highway to Hell – AC/DC

  97. this is ridiculous  |   Posted on Mar 28th, 2009 0

A Greatest Hard Rock Songs without any Deep Purple tune is a bad joke. Those guys really changed things with Machine Head. Judas Priest and Rainbow have better songs than Breaking the Law and Since you’ve been gone; Iron Maiden is absent

Guns N Roses is not shit to me, I like them, but labeling one of their songs -which is my favorite of GNR catalogue, by the way- as the absolute best is out of proportion.

Marilyn Manson, Evanescence, Korn, and many others, above Jethro Tull is madness to me. I mean, tastes are not subject of rate, anyone who likes more the former than the latter deserves respect, but I can’t believe specialists are outclassing such an influential song as Aqualung in this way. Can’t understand why Smashing Pumpkins, Creed and Velvet Revolver -which I like- are above real hard rock bands.

Obviously, whoever made this list has a very controversial criteria.

  98. phill helmuth  |   Posted on Mar 28th, 2009 0

i liked the list it was good you fucking bastards who disagree

  99. anticristo2008  |   Posted on Mar 29th, 2009 0

    My list :
    1.- Immigrant song
    2.-back in black
    3.-paranoid
    4.-higway star
    5.- Bohemian rapshody

plz vh1 , stop making this bullshit and remember the greatest hard rock decade : 70′s
    Best hard rock songs there!!!!
80′s : crap , shit, hair metal glam , worst rock decade , thats why grunge and alternative rock appeared.
