After making a splash with her vocal on the Sunn O))) / Boris collab Altar last year, melancholic, gothic country-rocker Jesse Sykes and her backing band The Sweet Hereafter are set to release their third record — and it all makes for a long ass post title. Jesse’s weathered, velvety vocals bend and fray with the album’s textured turns, sometimes an old woman’s whisper, sometimes a raspy man’s moan. The Sweet Hereafter includes ex-Whiskeytown guitarist Paul Wandscher, whose playing adds a cosmic-country quality to the tunes. Take this cut as Exhibit A:

I had a chance to listen to the free stream of this album yesterday. Now I come across this post here. I guess the word is getting out about this disc.
What a nice departure it is. People who have heard the last two Sweet Hereafter discs may not be expecting this kind of guitar rock from the band. But fans of Whiskeytown know that Phil has it in him.
The song “LLL” is like Neil and Crazyhorse for 2007. And I mean that in the best possible way. Actually, the whole disc kind of reminds of a Neil album like “After the Goldrush,” where “Southern Man” follows “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” and it makes perfect sense.
My advice. Take the time to give this disc a listen.
(And put on some decent headphones. There’s some cool stuff out on the left and right edges of the sound that I doubt you’ll hear on speakers.)
wow, you are right about lll. i like station grey too. i’ll have to go listen to the stream.
