The new clip from Swedish rockers Teddybears has Iggy doing his best Sting, in a vid pulled from everyone’s favorite Cadillac commercial. But then, unlike the Jaguar clip, there’s some irony to mine from the sweet, high-res images of a suited, chauffeured Iggy taking a ride through the glossy NYC streets while declaring his punkrockability. And unlike the actual streets of midtown manhattan, the pedestrians in fantasy Cadillac land are cuddly teddybears.

pretty nice, actually. Bad video, though. That elasped time night traffic thing has been done to death, as of like 1984. Slightly dumb lyrics, but great pairing of the Cars backing and Iggy vocals. I would have roughed-up the mix a little bit more, but that’s just me.

he is reminding me of calypso from the older twisted metal games (nerd alert). catchy song, but what is up with the punk rocker lines? corny.

The song and vid were great. That smile sequence was frightening though. Iggy should never do that again. I love the “cuddly” teddybears-they have teeth!

I heard this song in an ad during the Bears game last weekend, and we all knew it was Iggy Pop but no one had heard the song. Forget what the ad was for.

yuk – that was kind of awful.

    I’m diggin it

I like it. Reading the bit made me cringe and not want to watch it, but I was surprised. Maybe it was that Sum 41 collab that Iggy did that gave me a sense of foreboding…

  9. i listened to the song 2 days ago on the radio. and now you’re posting the video. maybe this is destiny, and we should be together forever, stereogum.

  10. Hahaha, I love that they even changed the P. Diddy billboard in Times Square to a teddy bear.

  11. aside from the teddybears this video could work for iggy’s “the passenger”

Nice, at first I thought the punk rocker line was kind of cheesy. But of course it’s iggy and he can get away with it, because well….HE’s the OG punk rocker bitch!

The song grew on me.. I like it now and I can picture hipster kids singing along to the “I’m a punk rocker” chorus with hads in the air…

  13. Wheres this song from? becuase its also on jay and silent bob strike back, sung by thomas rusiak.. but i was “cus im a hip-hopper yes i am”

  14. The band CEASARS (formerly known as Ceasars Palace) did the original version of “Punkrocker” about 5 years ago. Supposedly they approached Iggy about doing a remake.

I did download the whole orig song from I-tunes, it’s 6 minutes long, I like Iggy way better.

Has anyone heard the acoustic guitar version? If so who sings it?

  16. paul  |   Posted on Jan 27th, 2007

Iggy rocks. Nice clean cut Detroit boy.

  17. JSPRIME  |   Posted on Jan 28th, 2007

    This Song is amazing!

  18. i don’t know, ..what 2 think?

  19. None of you know what you’re talking about, this song is awesome,I can’t find a single flaw and I could listen to it all day. But I could never get sick of Iggy Pop. You all talk about what you would do differently, or better. Let’s see it…I’d listen.

  20. I actually haven’t watched it yet.

  21. Johnny '62  |   Posted on Feb 5th, 2007

Iggy could always cut to the chase and deliver a bitchin’ good rock tune. I love it.

  22. bear22  |   Posted on Feb 7th, 2007

Heard this in a Cadillac commercial could’t get it out of my head. That voice? being a Detroit boy I knew it was familiar. Iggy is an ICON!

  23. I don’t know if anyone mentioned this, but this song is a rip-off of another by Thomas Rusiak, “Hiphopper”. The lyrics are as follows:

You see me driving down the street
I look so fucking good (yeah)
Wer’e smokin’ weed and doing dirt
in my Tommy Hilfiger hoodie (ha yeah ha yeah uh)
Were gonna keep talking bullshit about you
’cause nobody be frontin’ me and my crew (me and my crew what, now to move on what)

Ref: Cause I’m a hiphopper yes I am ( yes I am what, yes I am uh)
Cause I’m a hiphopper yes I am (me and my crew what, now to move on what)

You see me wearing baggy jeans (baggy jeans huh, baggy jeans huh)
And my fat Tim stays on my feet (on my feet what, yeah)
I never smile when someone’s around (huh, what)
I’m low key staying harcore (hardcore, hardcore uh)

I?m never listen at anything else (fuck that, fuck that uh)
but the hiphop that ya’ll can feel (hiphop, hiphop uh)

Same tune and everything. I don’t know if he paid for this or whatever, but yeah.

I’ll drive Iggy around the Apple anytime in a Caddy.

    shit

  26. roebear  |   Posted on Feb 13th, 2007

it’s good song. he is a punkrocker. he truly started it all. iggy and the stooges and mc-5 fuled the ramones and all the brits. i know, it hurts, punk rock was started in the motor city.

  27. I swear he says I’m a bum fucker

  28. Jed3  |   Posted on Feb 21st, 2007

hey jed2, your mother has been done to death.

  29. Alex  |   Posted on Feb 22nd, 2007

Really thought it was Cash at first, but you can tell it is a Cash homage. From the black Iggy is wearing to declaring who/ what he was and stood for through his life. There is more story than the cover shows.

  30. The song is featured in a Caddilac commercial currently running. I too thought it was john cash singing it before finding this. Great tune!

  31. suzyb  |   Posted on Mar 5th, 2007

i thought it was a johnny cash song too, and i just spent an hour looking to find what album it was on. man i feel dumb. thank you stereogum for clearing this up for me. i am so stupid. :D

  32. Trenchtown  |   Posted on Mar 9th, 2007

Cam, this was a Teddybears song first and Rusiak was the one who spoofed it, The teddybears just did this one with iggy

  33. sweteddy  |   Posted on Mar 14th, 2007

Teddybears Sthlm did the original Punkrocker almost 7 years ago, I know since I happend to have their album (Rock ‘n’ Roll High School) with the track and it’s from the year 2000. I liked the original one better since it’s longer (about 5 min) and the lyrics fits better to the music.

This version with Iggy Pop is pretty much a shorter version of the original with some added guitars and Iggy of course. Still, it’s the best Punkrocker ripoff so far.

  34. Jimbo  |   Posted on Jun 7th, 2007

Yo! Way too cool! From the punkrocker who help start it all. Traversing the years from kid to grup but always the punkrocker!!!

  35. ralph  |   Posted on Jul 12th, 2007

music is excellent, teddybears are excellent, iggy pop is excellent.

  36. Matt J  |   Posted on Nov 5th, 2007

I don’t really give a doodle-dandy if this song is a rip-off, spin-off, or whatever, because this song rocks and I bet the other one, which I haven’t heard, sucks.

  37. Sweet Mary  |   Posted on May 9th, 2008

No, this is NOT a rip-off of Hiphopper! Punkrocker is the original song. It was released in Sweden 2000 by both Teddybears and Ceasar’s Palace, then remade by Thomas Rusiak feat. Teddybears (Hiphopper), later remade by Torgny Melins (Dansbander) and also remade by Nordic Garrisons (Stormtrooper, Yes I Am). And now Teddybears covered themselves with Iggy.

  38. Two days ago I first heard this song/saw the video while waiting for my kids in Tilly’s, a clothing store. I can’t get it out of my head, but in a good way. This song rocks big time!

I can’t believe most of the comments – Iggy Pop was born to sing that song.
