Beginning in March, Jimi, Kurt, Janis, and Jim Morrison will come to NYC in the new play 27 Heaven, which brings you (yes, you!) to the gates of heaven, where Kurt first meets the other beautiful corpses. Via the play’s press release:

27 Heaven opens with a recently deceased and rather confused Cobain meeting Hendrix, Joplin and Morrison at the Great Gig in the Sky. Cobain must decide whether or not he wants to walk through the same, exclusive gates of heaven as the three rock icons – whom have all been up there at least 25 years. Initially he seems keen to join the exclusive club as they share their experience, warmth and wisdom with him. But a lot has changed since these rockers challenged the terrestrial system. As the conversation wear on, Cobain realizes the three rock icons are more whacked than ever – Joplin still drinks excessively, Morrison has become an Orthodox Jew and Hendrix is no longer the psychedelic prophet of guitar mageddon, but rather a staunch advocate for a drug-free paradise.

The website adds that Jimi “preaches the virtues of being a neo Nazi” (obvs). But we already know how 3/4 of this ends:

Jim Morrison was reincarnated as this little girl; Jimi Hendrix became a businessman; Janis Joplin came back as a sumo wrestler.

Jury’s out on Kurt reincarnate.

What about Brad Nowell of Sublime….come on how can you leave him hanging. He died at 27. (coincidentally of Heroin too) I believe thats enough to qualify. Oh yeah, and an inspired musician.

I actually saw this play in Dallas, TX at The Grenada Theater this past weekend and have been googling it ever since mainly because of the male actor cast to play Jimi Hendrix . I’d be lying if I didn’t mention that this 27 Heaven musical DID have its “rocky” parts… but any and everytime Corey stepped up to the mic to channel Hendrix, it went from “rocky” to “ROCK”! F*ck me, man! Hendrix rocks… even now today in an incarnate! I hope it travels in YOUR town soon, my fellow StereoGummers!!

Morrison? Joplin? And, c’mon – Kurt Cobain? LOL Oh, please! None of these katz came even close to the talent Hendrix had! Even while deceased, Hendrix is at another level!

seriously? These ppl are dead. Have SOME respect for them. I just think that this is insulting towards them.

  11. Hard to say Morris or Joplin wasn’t a Hendrix Mike – in what way? with a guitar? b/c the stage antics of Jim gave us what rock stadium shows are all about, & Joplin is easily the most influential female vocalist of all time. All used their instruments appropriately and saying one is better is nothing more than a fan’s opinion. Tell most kids today that Cobain isn’t a Hendrix and you’ve set yourself up for quite a debate. Very few artists since have connected with audiences and that is what segragates these artists, apart from being 27 – their ability to resonate after they are gone. I’ve give props to this production – its a great legacy, one which deserves more depth. However it comes…..
    Cheers, K

Bryan Jones was the first to join club 27 in 1969, july 3 , then Jimi hendrix , in september or 1970, than Janis joplin in october 4th then jim morrison same date as Brayn but yeah 1970 or 71 i think it was and then Kurt Cobain 1994 april 5th but theres more but there my favorit of them all…they each had subliminal messages and each of them started something awesome and what not but then they died.
