Stereogum reader Heather writes:

So my roommate and I are watching TV tonight, and there’s this Target commercial with this ridiculously awesome cover of “Hello, Goodbye” on it. I googled it until I was blue in the face, but was only to find out that it was by a girl named Sophia Shorai, but can I find an mp3 of it? No. Not anywhere. So, in order to shut my roommate up, do you have any idea where I could find one?

If you do, I’ll love you even more than I do now. Which is a lot.

Anyone have some help for Heather? She’s got love to give! We’ll put in a good word. This vid help getcha started (and if you time your blinking properly you can avoid the “good buy”s).

    Jesus, that’s so bad.

  2. That’s a ridiculously awesome cover? To each their own, I guess.

I’d rather know who the chick in the red bikini is. Yow!

  4. Matthew  |   Posted on Jan 30th, 2007

It’s a good cover. And a good woman in a red bikini, too. Yes.

  5. Target rules again, after Goldfrapp’s Fly Me Away and I Want More by Ragg.

This version of “Hey-la, hey-la-heylo-ah” is so sweet, it makes my teeth hurt more than they usually do. Sophia’s MySpace page shows… nothing.

that cover makes me want to van gogh both my ears.
also, michael jackson is a bad motherfucker
notice how, as his legal troubles increased, he was so much more eager to license beatles’ songs.
then, we get stuck hearing “it’s getting better” in phillips flat TV screen commercials and now this godawful target cover.
I mean…fuck…”Revolution” in a nike commercial was bad enough.
If I keep hearing shitty Beatles’ covers like this, I might have to blow my mind out in a car.

Damn Michael Jackson…!! Damn him straight to hell! This chick has a decent voice, but come on man… I should have known when you used the phrase “ridiculously awesome”. Last good Beatles cover I heard was Elliott smith… Maybe you should check that out as a point of reference so you don’t waste our time the next time a once great Beatles song is sold by Mr. Jackson and then shit on.

It’s still a yummy song to hear. Cloying like cotton candy, almost pure sugar. I may have to resort to extracting it from the youtubed commercial if I can’t find it soon!

Since you diapers missed the original version of H-G due to yet being conceived, recognize Sophia’s version offers sweet seductions on an original Beatles thingie. MagicalMysteryTour was a heroin side trip for the fab4, and H-G sounded like a German troop march looking for it’s army. Not too popular when it was released, but the Beatles had a habit of releasing albums at Xmas time, thus being the ultimate Xmas gift, so anything went. Check out
Sophia Shorai’s site and hope she posts a copy there. Someone buy her a (one way) ticket out of Minneapolis!

Aye, I only stumbled upon this site b/c i couldn’t get the song outta my head either. I’m not surprised its both a remake and by the infamous Beetles. I really like the way she sung it b/c it she didn’t chop it all up (screw it up). If anything, she just transgendered it with female vocals and added a little of “in this day and age” flava to it. In short, I love hearing that stupid Target commercial and I wanna put that song on my myspace page, lol!

Bye the way, if your feeling grumpy any given monday morning b4 work, just play this song and i gurantee you will feel friendlier… unless you’re naturally a complete a**hole.

  12. I LOVE this song. It’s like clouds, or butterflies wings . . . . It flitters and floats !It is light and happy! I understand why people say it sucks, but to those of us that love Sophia’s version, let us love it, and keep your negativeness away please!!!!

  13. Lesley  |   Posted on Feb 17th, 2007

I googled it till I turned blue too.
I finally found it on Morpheus.
Search for Shorai and it comes up.
    Good luck. :]

    Okay, I lied.
    I’m sorry.
After it loading it turned out to be an ad,
I am going to keep looking for it.
    :/

  15. Linda Crawford  |   Posted on May 17th, 2007

I too want an mp3 of the song. Love it, love it, love it. So very different from the original (which has been a fave for decades), but nice in a smooth way.

  16. april  |   Posted on Jun 4th, 2007

so seriously no one has found the damn song anywhere?

  17. Target has a habit of hardly known artists to do fantastic songs and then not release them. Case in point: Sam Prekop (of the Sea and Cake) did a great original composition and a lot of people “turning blue in the face” trying to find a copy. Alas, Target or Prekop released it.

I bet if he had he’d be creating more buzz like Forever Thursday (JCPenney ad) and Frou Frou.

  18. She writes and perfoms Ad jingles. So there may not be a full version of this song by her. It may have just been an ad version.
She is from Minneapolis which is interesting, that is where Target is based.

  19. Dave  |   Posted on Jun 18th, 2007

you can try to email her at sophia@sophiashorai.com

to release “Hello, goodbye on a
future album? She also does real full length tracks when she isn’t making jingles

One of the best things about this version of the song, besides her voice of course, is the 6th based cord, I think it’s a D#m6 (key of G). This may be the incorrect description/name of this particular cord phrasing, heck, I may be completely wrong on what chord that is with my limited fretboard knowledge – it comes in the longest at the part near the end where the batteries and robots are ‘dancing’. Whatever the configuration, it’s a very pleasing chord to the ear, I believe it adds very nicely to the song, and it seems to be a bit different or missing entirely from the Beatles original version.

Anyone know if I’m correct on that guitar chord?

  21. nate  |   Posted on Jul 13th, 2007

got an .mp3 of it. however do not know how to post it

  22. anonymous  |   Posted on Sep 28th, 2007

    thank you wendy!

Do not try to download from that alleged myspace site.

Try hitting the home buttom to see what I mean.

    I love this version too.

  24. Joe Schmo  |   Posted on Feb 29th, 2008

they need to cease and desist with this type of garbage

  25. bboy74  |   Posted on Mar 11th, 2008

I actually like this version just a bit better and the girl in the green bathing suit wiggles just so right…yummy….

  26. The song’s not released anywhere. It may be in the future. She does jingles for a lot of different advertisements.
