Samuel Jackson stars in another muthafuckin’ Snake movie, playing a blues musician bent on “curing” Rae (Christina Ricci) of her nymphomania (this is a problem why, Sam?) in the forthcoming flick Black Snake Moan. Before you tease Samuel for his choice of roles, realize that Snake gave him the chance to act along side master thespian Justin Timberlake. AND it gave him the chance to sing the blues! Here’s the “clean” version of the blues standard “Stack-O-Lee,” downright dirty but for the unfortunately bleeped instance of Sam’s patented mutha-swearin’ catchphrase.

Dirty version!

Black Snake Moan is out 2/23 on Paramount, soundtrack available now on New West .

I know Stack-O-Lee (sic) is a recurring character throughout Black folksong, but the lyrics are pretty similar to Nick Cave’s “Stagger Lee,” which I thought was an original riff on the character. Anyone? BTW – less YouTube, more MP3.

“Stack-O-Lee” (no sic, ferris, that’s how it’s credited on the film soundtrack) is another name for “Stagger Lee,” also Stagolee and Stackerlee, which was covered by Nick Cave and about three thousand other people.

  6. This version of Stagolee is one that R.L. Burnside sang occasionally. I produced a Burnside CD called “Well Well Well” on MC Records that has the full unexpurgated version of Burnside doing this tune. By the way, I believe that’s Burnside’s relatives and his guitar player in the band on this video.

I’m sure Samuel L. Jackson’s been asked this question before…are he and Randy Jackson ll of American Idol, cousins. They look alike and sound alike when talking.
