Have you compiled that perfect love songs playlist for your Valentine’s night? If you haven’t, then don’t expect any help from this list by The NY Daily News. What a crock list, the Beatles wrote so many love songs in the beginning of their career and the Bee Gees “How Deep Is Your Love” god what about How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? and what about Since I Fell For You.. Shoot the guys who made this list..

Wow, Never knew people could get so mad at a LOVE song list. Remember people everyone has different taste’s and some song’s may have more meaning. For certain people some songs may effect them because of they’re situation or something they went thru in they’re life. So In essence all lists are Bullshit. LOL

  5. timmmytot  |   Posted on Jan 23rd, 2009 0

kudos to those wishing for ben folds “the luckiest”. Beautiful song. as for jim up above…same auld lang syne by dan folgelberg. sorry lad. as for my two cents…”if i’m not in love with you” by kathy tricolli.

  6. Martin  |   Posted on Jan 24th, 2009 0

Did anyone else not notice ‘Unchained Melody’ not in the top 5??? I mean, all opinions aside, I’ve done research and it’s been voted the best love song. And number 100 should definitely be moved up like… 80 numbers

  7. this is more a comment to krystal about her comment to Martin M.
God Only Knows is not about racing cars thats actually “Don’t worry baby” so in fact i think you should probably listen to the lyrics and you might find that it is a truly beautiful song. and totally deserving a space in the top 10

  8. Hendrixx  |   Posted on Feb 4th, 2009 0

The list should’ve had Heaven Knows and Nothing Can Stop Us Now by Rick Price… and also Now and Forever by Richard Marx.

  9. Shell  |   Posted on Feb 7th, 2009 0

  10. Rob  |   Posted on Feb 9th, 2009 0

Okay, obviously a list is just someone’s or a group of someones’ opinions. So I won’t rant about songs being slighted, especially since there are a few near the top that belong there in my opinion – especially Flack’s “First Time”, which is the best, in my opinion. Bridge Over Troubled Water, though? Not sure I would call it a love song. Paul Simon’s best love song is “Kathy’s Song” with lyrics that move – “And so you see I have come to doubt/All that I once held as true/I stand alone without beliefs / The only truth I know is you / And as I watch the drops of rain / Weave their weary paths and die / I know that I am like the rain / There but for the grace of you go I. Firehouse’s “Love of a Lifetime” and Shania Twain’s “From This Moment” are both panty removers. And definitely a surprise to see no “Annie’s Song” by John Denver. Fogelberg’s “Longer” belongs on any list of great love songs. Billy Joel’s best pure love song is “She’s Got A Way”. Hard to leave Alison Krause “When You SayNothing At All” off the list, even tho it’s a little corny. Sinatra’s “Wee Small Hours of the Morning”? Eva Cassidy’s recording of “Autumn Leaves” will make you cry, and if you are looking to discover a beautiful but obscure love song, check out Cassidy’s recording of “You Take My Breath Away.” Listening to that song, it’s hard to tell if it’s a great song on its own power, but her voice for sure makes it a gem. And one more, for the adventurous: A new artist named Brooke Fraser who has some songs hitting Christian radio, has a love song called “The Thief” that will probably never see radio daylight but which will blow you away.

    • ROB: AGREED; the best song by far….ever….is Flacks version of “the first time”….she originally was a classically trained arranger and that version with two double bases, one bowed with that final bowed base note is simply…incredible and so cannot be appreciated on the radio which always cuts off. Her voice doesnt just sing…it addresses heaven.
Compare it to Celine’s with all her singing ability….and standard arrangement…it doesnt even come close…and just for a larf….hear Elvis’s double time version!
      Rock on Roberta….

      • Apologies to George Michael !!!…..Sorry old chap..your version is tottally exquisite in its own right and together, your versions are head and shoulders above everyone else although Im sure you’d be the first to agree that Roberta’s is the head.
On hearing again I think that bowed double base is actually a cello. The arragement never threatens to take over the song leaving Roberta’s finally repeated phrase “your face…your face…your face” accompanied by that base to bring heaven to a stand still. Cracks me up every time.
Anyway back to Dury….”had a love affair wiv Nina, in the back of my Cortina”….

Tough List to Whittle Down to 100. Here’s some obvious omissions.

    Dancing Shoes – Dan Fogelberg
    Longer – Dan Fogelberg
    Everything I Own – Bread
You’re The Only Woman – Ambrosia

  13. Juan-Pierre  |   Posted on Feb 16th, 2009 0

A good song would be one that comes from you to your girlfriend, somthing with meaning, feeling somthing that reflects how u feel for her, i wouldnt let a list like this tell me what would be the best song for my girlfriend, that would be up to me. I personally like some of Enrique Iglesias songs. but good work on the list there is a couple of songs i forgot about thnx!

  14. damone  |   Posted on Feb 20th, 2009 0

wow that really sux for jim. i know because i use to feel the exact same way. everything u said u felt i’ve felt. u just gotta find some one else that makes u happy. i only have 2 suggestions Always and Forever, and Sarah’s Smile. my 2 favorite personally

  15. John  |   Posted on Feb 20th, 2009 0

Can we all just exclude these songs from future lists? I mean we get it. These are the standards so let’s just go on from there. Geez, bored me to tears.

  17. Owl Scones  |   Posted on Feb 23rd, 2009 0

Okay..I refuse to take this list seriously without Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” or Elvis’ “Fools Rush In”. Inexcusable…

  18. Kols  |   Posted on Feb 23rd, 2009 0

My favorites – ballad version of “I’ll be Seeing You”, “What’s New” Helen Forrest and “Don’t You Want Me Baby”, none of which are on your list. Don’t begin to agree with your choices or rankings. Found 20 I’d rank in a 100 best list and can think of at least 200 to think of including. These lists are kind of fun but, since I doubt I’m the one with this reaction, meaningless.

  19. kwatts59  |   Posted on Feb 23rd, 2009 0

I like “the Rose” sung by Bette Midler. It should be on the top 100.

  20. al green is disturbingly low on this list. he is soley responsible for half of the babires made in the 70′s and 80′s. the other half are blamed i guess on cocaine.

  21. Betsy  |   Posted on Mar 10th, 2009 0

Seriously, I can’t believe you people. Does it really matter THAT much if the songs you like aren’t on there. I mean, there’s probably hundreds of thousands of songs to choose from. The author just chose what he thought people might like.

Not everything you may like is neccessarily the songs the public likes. I think you need to rethink your attitude and realize that your favorite songs change and this list may not be what it is 10 years from now.

  22. This is like the cheesiest shit in the world!!!

  23. ohhh come on now…. what a stupid list…. the first ten songs are just ridiculous… is that really all u can do?

  24. omg how lame!!!!
except cat stevens, the beatles (of course), the temptations and elvis costello.
but other than that… what happened to the 2000′s!?!?!

    poo.

  25. yegnov  |   Posted on Mar 16th, 2009 0

I once played “Let me put my love into you babe” by AC/DC to my girlfriend and she just melted. Lip-syncing “let me cut your cake with my knife” was the best thing I ever did.

  26. Eric  |   Posted on Mar 16th, 2009 0

u kno, i hate how people even ATTEMPT to make lists like these…this is definitely on MY top list of the stupidest things in the world XD…its like a group of people making a judgement for EVERY1 to agree with..99% of the time..no 1 agrees with this crap….i guess they dnt kno we hav opinions too

  27. lordofthestrings  |   Posted on Apr 6th, 2009 0

How come nobody mentioned “Anna Begins” by Counting Crows? That song has some of the most beautiful lyrics I’ve ever heard. And what the fuck happened to “Forever” by the Beach Boys, and “Crying” by Roy Orbison? And fucking “Catch the Wind” by Donovan!!!!!

  28. Waqar Sial  |   Posted on Apr 16th, 2009 0

    Hay No ENRIQUE IGLESIAS????

no “HERO”, nor “MAYBE”, nor “STAY HERE TONIGHT”?

  29. mega  |   Posted on Apr 23rd, 2009 0

baby love, kiss from a rose, ain’t no mountain high enough, how deep is your love, happy together, should be eliminated….Please!!!!! there are much better songs….My Girl, number 1, wow!!!!!!!…..How about placing Lovin’ You at # 1 and add Kiss and Say Goodbye by the Manhattans, When I Need You by Leo Sayer, Careless Whisper by Wham, I Can’t Take It by Ernie Smith, Turn On The Lights by Teddy Pendergrass, After the Lovin’ by Engelbert Humperdinck, If You Leave Me Now by Chicago, One More Try by George Micheal, Only A Fool Breaks His Own Heart by Tom Jones, Midnight Blues by Wendy Alleyne (guess u never heard this one), Fire And Desire by Rick James and Teena Marie, The Way You Look Tonight by Tony Bennett…How could u include Strangers In The Night by Frank Sinatra but left out Unforgettable by Nat King Cole….I’m done…..LOL

  34. kenj  |   Posted on Jun 2nd, 2009 0

OMG! I think To Make You Feel My Love is perhaps one of the best songs ever. period. It should be in the top five at least.

And Shameless, by Billy Joel/Garth Brooks?

    What about Faithfully, by Journey?

    Ugh.

  35. Amanda  |   Posted on Jun 13th, 2009 0

Okay, some of these songs are good. But you forgot:
    Accidentally in Love -Counting Crows
    Good Day Sunshine -Beatles
I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing -Aerosmith
And I could probably think of a lot more songs, but it simply isn’t worth my time. :P

  36. danielle  |   Posted on Jun 22nd, 2009 0

so with or without you isnt exactly a love song, wonderful tonight is ironic, and he wasnt really a faithfull man, not to hate on clapton love his music, fire and rain by james taylor shouldve been on here. yes its sad but its love. come on eileen was more lust than love. i was hoping for an intelligent evaluation of love songs. fail.

  39. juan DeLuna  |   Posted on Jul 12th, 2009 0

where is Kc & jojo ” All my Life”?????? WTF??

  40. ‘let’s det it on’ by marvin gaye and “one summer night” by the danleers are favorite love songs ever!!

  41. Solid list. I would put “I’ll be there” on no.1. It’s such an amazing ballad, sung perfectly by young Michael.

  42. Bob  |   Posted on Aug 9th, 2009 0

Okay, so some of my choices (and those of a lot of other people) are not on the list, fine; there are a lot of songs out there and obviously they can’t all be listed. However:

I cannot believe anyone anywhere thinks “Lovin’ You” (#57) is even a tolerable song, let alone a good song. That shriek she does sounds like the Vienna Boys’ Choir being murdered horribly. I swear I can actually feel important bits retract inside my body at that hideous noise. I suppose it might be good if you have hairtrigger trouble, but it is The. Worst. Song. Ever. It’s easily a kiloHung worse than “We Built This City.”

  43. Algabrez Mintiano  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2009 0

Hey, I thought there was a guy called Paul Anka, who had many songs about love. What about “You Are My Destiny” or “How Can Anything Be Beautiful After You?” not to mention “My Way” whose lyrics written by himself.

  44. awesome collection man. thanks for everything
i was madly searching for these songs got then here

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ck_f4BIVQYg

hope this will help you guys

  45. I like a lot of other love songs that are not on that list that I have on my blog. Everyone though has their own opinion of what are good love songs.

  46. stephanie  |   Posted on Sep 9th, 2009 0

Reading this list just wasted 5 minutes of my life. Too bad I don’t get a refund. Who the hell created this list? There are some good ones, but only a few. Most are corny as hell & the biggest reason why this list sucks – IT DOESN’T LIST THE TRUE 100 GREATEST LOVE SONGS EVER RECORDED.

  47. xoxkayxox  |   Posted on Sep 10th, 2009 0

this list totally sucks .. wow

  49. samson  |   Posted on Oct 14th, 2009 0

there is not a single song by “westlife” . all songs of westlife are almost love songs.
and what about “celine dion” especially my heart will go on and on.

    MY LOVE – WESTLIFE
    WRITTEN IN THE STARS- WESTLIFE
TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART- WESTLIFE
    MORE THAN WORDS- WESTLIFE /EXTREME

Where on earth is Otis Redding(Precious Love, These Arms of Mine), Prince (Nothing Compares 2 U – just to mention a classic, the Beautiful Ones, Diamonds&Pearls), Michael Jackson (I.J.C.S.L.Y., Lady of my Life, Can’t Help It) COME ON! I could just keep on going.. DISSAPOINTMENT

    and “mandy” by Barry Manilow?

  52. Anonymous  |   Posted on Oct 28th, 2009 0

It’s about his mother and Yoko, that’s what the “ocean child” part is about. I don’t think it should be on the list (especially since Something and God Only Knows aren’t on here) but it can definitely be thought of as a love song.

  53. Lucas  |   Posted on Oct 30th, 2009 0

WHAT!!! WHERE IS JAMES BLUNT ON THIS LIST????!!!!!!!!!!!

  54. Fran M.  |   Posted on Nov 9th, 2009 0

Always and Forever was my wedding song. I lost my love now im alone.

  55. Beth F.  |   Posted on Nov 17th, 2009 0

Good list but some should be moved into the the second group of one hundred in favor of many others suggested. I’d also add Bobby Darin’s version of “Once Upon a Time” about love lost. Soooo romantic and heart-wrenching.

  56. Ryan  |   Posted on Nov 18th, 2009 0

Really, I agree with you. It is NOT the best list for love songs. (There’s no Celine Dion, “My Heart Will Go On” That is like, the best love song ever. It was even played in the Titanic movie!!) But keep the peace.

And “Wonderful Tonight.” is a very good love song. It’s one of my favorites. If you don’t believe me, here are the lyrics. And it is NOT an anger song! You’re thinking something else. It even has, “I love you,” in it!

    LYRICS TO WONDERFUL TONIGHT
It’s late in the evening; she’s wondering what clothes to wear.
She puts on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair.
And then she asks me, “Do I look all right?”
And I say, “Yes, you look wonderful tonight.”

We go to a party and everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady that’s walking around with me.
And then she asks me, “Do you feel all right?”
And I say, “Yes, I feel wonderful tonight.”

I feel wonderful because I see
The love light in your eyes.
And the wonder of it all
Is that you just don’t realize how much I love you.

It’s time to go home now and I’ve got an aching head,
So I give her the car keys and she helps me to bed.
And then I tell her, as I turn out the light,
I say, “My darling, you were wonderful tonight.
Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight.”

    Definitely not an anger song.

  62. Steve  |   Posted on Dec 11th, 2009 0

I agree with many of you that someo of this stuff is just old cliche pop stuff. When is the last time the author actually listened to a current radio station. This stuff is almost all 50′s thru 70′s. One song my girlfriend absolutely loves is not on this list. It’s one most of you have heard, but few know who sings it.

Firehouse – Love of a Lifetime

List is a starting point, but I say one of the TOP TEN (and I’m not old enough to have heard this when it was new) is “Annie’s Song” by John Denver. You know… “You fill up my senses, like a night in a forest, like the mountains in springtime, like a walk in the rain…”

Outrageous. If there is a list of love songs, and you cant find “For Once in My Life” sung by countless, from Frank, Sammy, Liza, Stevie Wonder, a great wedding song karaoke. And no where found on this list cancels the whole thing.

Dude you get paid for this, your list is so lame, I think you did this list on a piece of toilet paper while sitting on the can…No Roy Orbison! Unacceptable!

    Purple Rain – Prince ?????????????????????????

  69. Ryan Dias  |   Posted on Jan 18th, 2010 0

    The following songs are missing:-
    1) Everything I Do (I Do It For You) – Bryan Adams.
2). My Heart Will Go On – Celine Dion.
3). I’ll Be There For You – Bon Jovi.
4). All About Loving You – Bon Jovi.
5). Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You – Glen Madeiros.
So many more Bon Jovi songs could replace at least 80% of the songs mentioned in the VH1 list.

I Will Always Love You only at 33?! At Last at 89?? Both are top 10 hands down.

  77. xuxiq  |   Posted on Feb 20th, 2010 0

It’s definitely a love song. This song describes the love my husband and I share. It is NOT a drug song, it is a love song….depends what it is you love. Music is what you make it. Yes, every songwriter has a purpose, but in the end, song meaning become what we want them to mean. Who cares about the public? My goodness…have your own opinions.

  78. no “blue” by eiffel 65!? this list is shit.

  79. ‘Visions of Johanna’ by Bob Dylan is not on this list. It should be. Maybz peeps who rate Lulu don’t really ‘get’ lyrics.

  80. I think this compilation is incomplete without Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do (I do it for You). Somebody needs to recompile this.

  81. come on !!! UNCHAINED MELODY NO 19??? it should be in the top 5!!!

  82. C’est ecrit by Francis Cabrel, well at least 10 of his songs could occupy number 1, but I would pick that one. The first line alone trumps anything that any other artist on this list has ever said:

“She will make you change the course of the clouds.”

  83. I like your every Songs.

    I love to this Songs.

    Thanks.

  84. hey for all of you haters out there… do you realize how many absolutely amazing love song got left off this lis? ya im sure there are a bunch of your favorites left off but come on every single on of these are classics and if you say anything otherwise you just dont have any musical taste… great list i would make changes personally but still nice work

  85. Im honestly more pissed that not one person complained about there not being a single Dire Straits song on the list then the fact that the list is total garbage, How do you leave out both “Tunnel of Love” and “Romeo and Juliet”, two of the greatest love songs ever hands down, and another great one thats missing is “Story Book Love” off of the Princess Bride sound track, when i hear any of those songs there is only one girl i think about, the girl of my dreams, the girl i hope to be lucky enough to marry some day, oh and one more, “Stolen” by Dashboard Confessional, over all im not a fan of them at all but i heard that song at the end of an Episode of Scrubs and it once again made me think of that special girl, which is what any great love song should do, it should bring one person to your mind, the one person who means more to you than anything

  86. Ever heard of Bruce Springsteen? “Jersey Girl” is one of the most beautiful love songs I’ve ever heard.

  87. clearly when listening to music it is all a matter of opinion. and when making a list like this ones race is going to play into effect. not saying that it is racism but black people care more about making their race seem better. remember the music awards with that scum kante wests. stop being fooled america blacks are more racist than whites are

  88. Where is “Afternoon Delight”?

  89. My favorite was always “I Love You” by The Climax Blues Band

  90. wonderfull songs but how can we download

  91. I can’t believe you missed “I don’t wanna miss a thing” by Aerosmith! that is the best love song, or even song on the planet!

  92. I think ”Iris” by the goo goo dolls should be here…

  93. ok my thoughts are this the list is a good one it could be better i saw a bunch of songs i know that i thought should be on there but this isnt my list it is still a good one like i said though personally i wouldve added some kenny g but not everyone likes jazz kinda like not everybody likes some of the songs suggested this is an opinion folks not a stated fact list

  94. well i don’t know about 100, but my top 69 is from the magnetic fields

  95. WTF where’s D Bryan Adams
    F***

  96. I do not know how they can list them by counting down. But list it seems is not complete. What happened to …

*Nsync – Its tearin’ up my heart
.38 special – So caught up in you
3 Doors Down – Here Without you
10cc – The things we do for love
98 Degrees – Because of you
    ABBA – I Do, I Do
AC/DC – Let me put some love into you
    Adele – Someone like you
Aerosmith – I do not want to miss a thing
Air Supply – All out of love, Every woman in the world, Here I am, The one that you love
Al Jarreau – We’re in this love together

I was gonna list all of them … but the list is simply just too long
