Between their huge success with Good News…, adding Johnny Marr to the lineup, and being covered by Kidz Bop, expectations are high for Modest Mouse’s new one. Based on the 200 emails you guys have sent us, seems like it’s impressing most, annoying the rest. After months of “Marrdest” Mouse build up, our first impulse, obvs, was to scour the tracks for that Johnny touch. And Marr’s in there (“We’ve Got Everything,” for one), but he’s enhancing, not dominating. We need to listen more — and were less than impressed by their show at Webster and the shit-grade live boots — but the studio, Dennis Herring’s production, and James Mercer’s guest vocals (“Florida” in particular) have been good to the We Were Dead… tunes. It’s not the departure most probably expected, but is it enough to please the diehards? You’ve been into MM well before “Float On,” we know. Satisfied?

We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank is out 3/20 on Sony.

    bands need to change
    people change
    times change
everyone likes the album they can most relate to.
to say they are no longer a good band is bull, to write them off, you were never a true fan.
a fan understands growth. good artist are never understood because they change and grow and understand the time better than anyone else.
cant write the same shit you wrote 10 years ago when you dont feel that way anymore.

  3. I don’t know why anyone would consider “Florida” or “Little Motel” (sounds like a Mariah Carey cover) good songs let alone good modest mouse soung but I guess everyone’s got their own fixings. Sure there are some obvious flops on the album as well as some obvious greats but you can’t really expect any band to produce a good follow up to an album like the Moon and Antarctica, they kind of out did themselves at that point. They’re still a great group, they’ve just got a new sound fresh out of the oven too hot fo yo mind.
