Our last look at Okkervil River was via their collaboration with Roky Erickson. In this video shot at the Living Room in NYC, main man Will Sheff performs a new song, “Lay Of The Last Survivor.” He introduces it as “incredibly depressing,” but it’s more a mild downer.

It sounds like this was one of a few new songs, so perhaps others will surface. The performance was part of Bird Of Youth’s Living Room residency, which continues with different guests for August’s remaining Tuesdays.

I’ll bet the band is really going to pick up the tempo on this one when (if) they cut it for the next record. Definitely reminds me of a lot of other Okkervil songs. In fact, Sheff’s songwriting is starting to sound a little redundant . Still pretty good though, and the band always finds a way to throw in a couple of killer hooks behind him. Looking forward to the next proper album.
I’m hoping they go in a completely different direction than Stage Names/Stand Ins. I didn’t like the first and the second was only marginally better. I realize I’m mostly alone in this. OR have long been one of my favorite bands, but I prefer the darker, more folk oriented stuff. I’ll wager that whatever the next record will be completely different from anything that came before.
