  7. Hoyt Pollard  |   Posted on Mar 3rd, 2007

When are they going to post the link to the player? It’s supposed to start in ten minutes. I stayed in for this.

  8. Gene Hackman  |   Posted on Mar 3rd, 2007

Jeff, why don’t you just shut the hell up and go wait for Wes Anderson to revive your career again? That’s what I’m doing.

  9. ryantheduke  |   Posted on Mar 3rd, 2007

sounds wilcotastic so far.. thanks a lot to the gum!

  10. anyone get any of these lyrics down? i’m already obsessed with “you are my face”

  11. i’m a big wilco fan, but this is veering a little too close to adult contemporary. maybe it’ll grow on me, but on first listen, i’m kind of disappointed.

  12. jermainejackson  |   Posted on Mar 3rd, 2007

yeah it’s all pretty smooth, but it’s working for me. like muzak, but wilco-lonized muzak.

  13. This album is absolutely incredible.

  14. ryantheduke  |   Posted on Mar 3rd, 2007

    holy shit..

that’s how you make an album.. thank you, wilco.

  15. Wow. What a fantastic album. I was hesitant about a “soft rock” Wilco album, but they nailed it. Just wow.

  16. dcadguy  |   Posted on Mar 3rd, 2007

The album is definitely more mellow than I thought it would be (especially with the new members of the band). That said, it is still pretty damn good. Standouts – “Walkin’” (’cause its got some kick to it), “What Light” and “On and On and On.”

Glad they are back, and looking forward to some live shows this summer.

(The Police and Wilco at Bonnaroo is looking better and better.)

Finally, the record that all the indie kids can enjoy with their parents! Hell, Grandparents! If this were the new James Taylor album, nobody’d give a shit. This is just plain boring.

  18. El Payo  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

Great record, I really liked “Leave Me (Like You Found Me).” Glad they can continue to surprise me and still sound like Wilco.

  19. Allan Ramsay  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

I would say that this is what happens when Pink Floyd meets Miles Davis, sprinkled with some folk. I think that Jeff’s acoustic romp heavily influenced this cd.

First listen, very good. Probably not their best work but again a sweet turn in their career. Almost liked they combined everything they know into one cd.

  20. ryantheduke  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

traces of beatles throughout, especially in “hate it here”..

second listen now.. god, what a fantastic album.

  21. Dean Burbage  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

Parts of this album sound so much like Wings!

I really like this album. Very gentle and healthy sounding. Not the ramshackle lovely weirdoinsanity of A Ghost is Born, but what is.

  22. shane  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

It all goes down smoothly, which is a little disappointing to me…I always like a Spiders or an Ashes of American Flags to challenge me a little bit. I think I’ll grow to like it, though.

I just expected the lineup that released Kicking Television to rock a little harder.

  23. The Spirit of Koko Goldstein has his name all over this album. Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins approve.

    Do it for KOKO!

  24. Wow. This record is exceptional.

  25. You people commenting on the “soft rock” nature of this album … did you even hear the guitar-work on these songs?
I fookin’ love this album. Thank you Wilco.

I missed the little listening party, which is fine. I’ve heard the three “teaser” songs, plus live versions of a few others. After reading the reviews here, I’m really excited for this album. I haven’t looked forward to a new release this much in years. I think I’ll hold off on listening to the rest of the album until I actually have the CD in my hands, which means I’ll have to have some amazing will power once it leaks.

  27. BurningTaco  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

Please tell me someone captured this and can post is somewhere…..PLEASE

  28. Tyler  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

My first impression is that it’s not really a cohesive album-statement, which is something we’ve come to expect from Wilco. It’s not as strong in that regard.

I definitely hear a lot of the 70′s soft rock comparisons, Wings and Rundgren and whatnot. I even hear a little bit of Randy Newman, circa Little Criminals. The standout for me is “On and On and On”; maybe the best Wilco song put to wax yet.

I feel like this album is gonna have songs that grow big time, and songs that fall by the wayside. Some of it just felt like filler. I’ll still buy it, of course. It’s Wilco for crissakes.

  29. Oh yes.  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

I’ve still got the window open and the songs still play. Either someone needs to tell me how to capture this in Audacity or something, or I’ll just have to keep the window open until May… which i have no problem doing.

Such a good album. Thank you, Wilco.

  30. ryantheduke  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

my girlfriend closed the window, so thank youuu eric.

  31. Ryan  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

The album leaked, just FYI. I love it. Interesting direction. Nels adds a lot to it.

  32. arbiterofbitches  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

ryantheduke’s girlfriend is a bitch for closing the window. big time.

  33. Awesome, thanks! My fav album is still Summer Teeth.

I hope they gave a shout out to Harry Nilsson in the liner notes – often sounds straight out of the 70′s. Early Pink Floyd meets Nilsson with a touch of the Dead. A tad too “jam band” for me but a good album nonetheless.

  35. Is it just me or did anyone else expect more out of this album? Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was good, just not great. Too many solos.

  36. I was going to say “who cares”, but apparently a lot of you do. Sometimes I wonder why I come to stereogum. It’s not that I think you guys suck or anything like that, it’s just that we’re in completely different musical universes. Parellel dimensions perhaps?

  37. sorry I, if Wilco is no longer cool…..

but, i keep enjoying most of the stuff they’ve been putting out for years…..

best american band, in my humble….

    thanks for the tracks!

  38. Steve  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

Err.. if you’re not here to hear about bands like Wilco, what are you here for? Those stupid “bad MTV video” bits?

  39. Debbie  |   Posted on Mar 4th, 2007

I thought Hate it Here was possibly the best track.

  40. Having only herd live versions before, Impossible Germany just blew my head off.
Best band of this generation? Could be.

    And now having heard:
Wilco, Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, Feist, Dinosaur Jr, Bloc Party, The Shins, Of Montreal, Andrew Bird, Ted Leo, Apostle of Hustle….
Soooo much still to come including THE NATIONAL…!!

Best year for music ever. It’s only march.

  41. merc  |   Posted on Mar 5th, 2007

thank god someone mentioned summerteeth. it seems like that album is always left out. definitely my favorite wilco album, although they’ll never make another like it. which is for the best, i guess. and J, don’t leave out the new rosebuds “night of the furies.” any rosebud fans lurking around, go find it. another worthy leak. definitely the year of the leaks… uh, yeah.

  42. Jarrett  |   Posted on Mar 5th, 2007

This is the best Wilco album besides Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. Without a doubt. Wow.

  43. Andrew  |   Posted on Mar 5th, 2007

Why not just put this out as a solo record?

  44. Wilco has made a record that instantly sounds 30 years old.

It sounds like vinyl even on my Ipod.

“Hate it Here” is so classic.

    “What Light” is pretty Dylan.

It doesn’t rock as hard as some moments on most Wilco records, but it’s still a great album. I mean, lots of great albums don’t rock that hard.

You can use Bit Torrent to easily download the entire album. Find a torrent on Demonoid, for one place.

  45. >>”Why not just put this out as a solo record?”

Because the influence of members aside from Tweedy is more immediately prevalent on this album than perhaps ever before in the band’s career, and absolutely since Jay Bennett’s departure.

Nels Cline especially. Remove him from this and you’d have a different album entirely.

  46. well  |   Posted on Mar 7th, 2007

    well…
What a bunch of wishy-washy crap. Bonnaroo will love it.

    Better luck next time “Wilco”.

  47. There are a few positive comments here, it seems like the album is being universally panned on metafilter.com… what’s with all the hate? I’m on my fourth or fifth listen in and the songs are growing slowly but very surely.

It seems like YHF is the only album critics are willing to compare SBS to, which is a shame. Wilco’s greatest musical accomplishment isn’t how similar they can sound to Radiohead, guys. Didn’t ANYONE see them moving in this direction?

Hell is Chrome, Handshake Drugs, etc. So what if it sounds like adult contemporary or soft rock? Is there anything wrong with those genres just because their records aren’t reviewed on Pitchfork? And, of course, if a record ventures too far out of the Pitchfork/tinymixtapes/cokemachineglow/stereogum sound palette, theres going to be some backlash. That’s another habit i hate about critics: they can’t wait to shit all over bands that release one amazing album. They hold it against a band if they can’t re-create the same magic that possessed them in the previous album. Except for Radiohead, of course.

  48. That’s really true, mellowbonsai!
Why the fuck should always compare one album to another, specially if i love the band. Who can’t see that this album is genius is just a stupid snobby. You loved the Yankee HF, and hate this? Something’s wrong with your ear.
There’s way too much music out there, and snobby folks always seeks for the newest – they don’t have time to understand anything.
