As promised, here’s our last photo roundup of the shows we hit and folks we pestered on the streets of Austin during this year’s South By Southwest music festival. All in all we had a great time, saw some old friends, and constantly ran into Tim Harrington at the shows we chose to hit (again). If you were there, we’d love to hear what floored ya; we’ve talked up a couple of our picks already (Meat Puppets, New Violators, Lo-Fi-FNK, The Besnard Lakes, Deerhunter, and Menomena come to mind), but top honors go to Saturday’s Drag City treat of Bill Callahan at Central Presbyterian Church (with very special guest Joanna Newsom on piano). Bill gave us everything from Knock Knock‘s “Cold Blooded Old Times” to “Sycamore” from the phenomenal, forthcoming Woke On A Whaleheart, momentarily making the hardwood Church pews the most comfortable seats in Texas.

Other acts on the day included The Good, The Bad & The Queen at the FADER fort (nice to be that close to Damon, sorta sleepy overall though); Menomena and the black parade of The Polyphonic Spree at the blogger-curated Hot Freaks party (awesome job, guys!); and superb sets from Kings Of Leon, Spoon, and the photo-friendly Iggy & The Stooges at the Esquire showcase at Stubb’s. Once again, Jon Bahr delivered us some smashing shots, this time of Norah Jones compatriot Jesse Harris (with singer-songwriter Jessie Baylin), Donovan, and the lovely ladies of The Pipettes. And we spiced up the spread with some man-on-the-street shots to keep it infotaining. Enjoy! Until next year, Austin…

    looks amazing

  3. I’m sorry I missed that!

  4. Saw Buzzcocks three times in two days, twas heaven on earth. Meat Puppets rocked, Turbonegro destroyed everything in their path, Melvins shook my very soul, Big Business was awesome, Ozomatli was Ozo as always, and Lily Allen was really really fun. Bummed I missed Polyphonic Spree, heard they were awesome. Oh and SHAT has filled the void left in my heart when El Duce was hit by a train.

menomena was fantastic, but the polyphonic spree climaxed the whole damn weekend.

best show i’ve been to in awhile, fucking trancedent.

  7. How can anyone not like the Pipettes? I want to make babies with all of them…and Damon Albarn too.

Interesting how as the LeadSinger of Leon gets uglier and uglier, Bassist of Leon gets hotter and hotter.

[Insert comment about actual music so I don't seem so shallow here.]

Ah, I just know that I downloaded one of their CDs and I couldn’t listen to it. Maybe it is because I usually prefer male vocals over female.

“Girl” with Perry & Nuno is Mrs. Farrell (or probably legally, Mrs. Bernstein).

Meat Puppets and lo-fi fink rocked at the stereogum party, but I’m not buyin’ your hype of the new violators.

Spank Rock and Bonde de Role were amazing at the NASA party on thursday.

    Beach House did not disappoint.

  13. wow, i don’t think i could have summed it up any better….bonde de role and spank rock tore it up at the nasa party and meat puppets were epic… thanks scott and amrit!

old, wrinkly, and their hair is heinous. stop trying to find hotness in every damn indie girl act.

  17. Matthew  |   Posted on Mar 20th, 2007 0

the pipettes are the worst thing that has happened to music since hootie and the blowfish.

  18. milo  |   Posted on Mar 20th, 2007 0

old and wrinkly, the hell you talking about?

  19. Erin  |   Posted on Mar 20th, 2007 0

For every band in existence, there is a hater on Stereogum just waiting for a chance to shine.

  20. I honestly can’t fathom why anyone wouldn’t like the Pipettes. But hey, to each their own.

  21. Hey Guys…thanks for making it over to the Hot Freaks! event. From my perspective, the best “new” band I saw was The Early Years…they played a blistering set. Sea Wolf, Young Galaxy, and Land of Talk were also quite good.

After a listen or too The Pipettes get pretty annoying. That being said, they’re still hella cute.

  23. Greg  |   Posted on Mar 20th, 2007 0

I have to say that I was blown away by Land of Talk and The Rosebuds at the hot freaks show. Polyphonic Spree was just icing on the cake for the week there.

I don’t know about listening to a Pippette’s album, but in person they’re quite brilliant. They do a lot of old-style choreography (think doo-wop) and the songs have a lot of hooks. Everyone at the show I attended had a smile on their face after their set.

say what you want, but at least the brunette from the pipettes is really flippin’ hot

  26. sadly, i didn’t make it down this year…but kexp did me proud and streamed their shows online. i heard both apples in stereo (mediocre) and the stooges (the stooges!). check out my review on culturecloud:
