Patti Smith co-wrote “Because the Night” with Bruce Springsteen. She recorded it and released it in 1978 on her Easter album. I’m not sure if it can technically be described as a “cover” if she performs it onstage in 2007, since she was always the artist most associated with that song. Whenever Natalie Merchant does it, then it’s a cover.
