Josh Homme recruited the Strokes’ Julian Casabalancas and Bureau Of Morality director Trent Reznor for the forthcoming Era Vulgaris, out in June on Interscope. P4K spoke with Homme about what exactly an “era vulgaris” is:

It sounds like “the Vulgar Era”, which I like, because that sounds like something that I would like to be part of … I mean, I think we’re in it, and I’m stoked … Because I think our generation is, they don’t want to be dock workers or coal miners. They want to delay adolescence and prolong adolescence, prolong thought about what to do, and try to take advantage of life while it’s around, take more artistic jobs, like working at Pitchfork, playing rock music. And I totally understand that. And I also think it’s an age of disinformation, where it’s not like it’s being kept from you, it’s more like it’s being piled on top of you. And so I think every time you go to make a personal decision, it’s like more information comes to light. I think it’s not really bad, it’s more gluttony rad. It’s sort of like indecision. And I think while we’re all deciding, everyone samples a little bit of everything. And I’d like to play that party.

The album’s title track (which, awesomely, isn’t even on the album) features Trent Reznor and lyrics that match Homme’s rambling EV elaboration, though the cut itself, save a tricky beat switch or two, is pretty standard, dirty-marching QOTSA fare. And Josh added, “We’re being creative about how that song comes out.” Creative as in, Hype Machine? Take a listen at and tell us if you can hear Trent.

Era Vulgaris is out 6/12 on Interscope.

Anybody have other instances of title tracks appearing as b-sides?

The title track to Sloan’s “Pretty Together” was only released on a British compilation in the summer of 2001.

Guided by Voices did it with both “Bee Thousand” and “Alien Lanes.” Ted Leo just did it with “Living with the Living.” It happens.

The Mars Volta’s Frances The Mute in 2005 did not feature its’ title track. “Frances the Mute” was instead released as a B-side on “The Widow” single.

trent reznor is about 2/3 of the way in, if you want to skip ahead. QotSA is booooooring live.

  5. Foo Fighters “The Colour and the Shape” was a B-side.

Not quite b-sides, but The Doors “Waiting For the Sun,” Elvis Costello’s “Almost Blue,” and Led Zep’s “Houses of the Holy” all showed up on later albums instead of the albums of the same name.

  6. I don’t think it was ever a b-side, but Elvis Costello’s “Imperial Bedroom” was tacked on to the Rhino expanded version of the album of the same name.

And “Houses of the Holy” is, of course, on Physical Graffiti. But that’s not a b-side, either, so I’ll shut up now.

Ed Harcourt’s “Here Be Monsters.” Damn, this is one of my favorite topics and I can’t think of any others.

  8. The Radiohead B-side “Palo Alto” had the working title of “OK Computer”…but that’s really stretching it.

  9. Blind Melons’s Soup was a B-side I believe.

I think that “Head Trip in Every Key” by Superdrag was a b-side (or never released). Madly underrated band, at least for their first three albums.

  11. Yeah, the title track was only demo’d for the album. I was just telling a friend last week it might be the greatest song in their ‘Drag canon.

Rarities comp out on AARCO this week — not that all ‘Drag fans didn’t have ‘em already.

  12. Elliott Smith, Either/Or?

The last PJ Harvey album, Uh Huh Her, had a title track that was never officially released, just performed live.

  18. I can think of a few title tracks that should have been left off the album.

Tokyo Police Club- A Lesson In Crime
Its track 6 on Smith EP.

Once again, can someone link to mp3, or would that be asking for too much?

Queen’s album “Sheer Heart Attack” did not contain the song “Sheer Heart Attack”. It appeared on the album “News of the World”.

  21. Groucho  |   Posted on Apr 16th, 2007

“Please Describe Yourself” by Dogs Die in Hot Cars.

And, while not really a B-Side, “They Might Be Giants” by They Might Be Giants doesn’t appear on their self-titled debut album. Instead, the song made it two albums later, on “Flood”.

  22. Adam  |   Posted on Apr 16th, 2007

Beck’s “Midnite Vultures” — it was on the Beck.com b-sides collection.

Reznor comes in at 2:24 in the right channel. I don’t really like his addition to the song, but thats just me.

I love the song, personally. And to whoever said QOTSA were boring live… I don’t know what show you saw.

Oh the indie blogosphere vomits with pity that no one mentioned that “Living with the Living” isn’t on the Ted Leo’s brand new LP of the same title, but located on the “Mo’ Living” EP. YEESHKUL!

I’ve seen qotsa a couple times, and they were great when I saw them.
