This track opens the Veils’ excellent Nux Vomica, a sprightly LP of dark and disturbed pop, anchored by sole returning Veil Finn Andrews. “Not Yet”‘s cowboy shuffle lets Finn exorcise some vocal demons via the Brit-based trio’s hair-trigger, deep Western dynamics.
Our fave from the record is the explosive, dogma-probing “Jesus For The Jugular,” which we first posted about a year ago. Still love it, though, so a refresher is in order.
Though the lineup’s new, the trio offers up precise pop-noir throughout. Nux Vomica is a staple around Stereogum HQ these days, available via Rough Trade.

Kinda nice. Serious Nick Cave and Tom Waits vibes, but not in the vocals. The second song somewhat owes its rhythm section arrangement to “Clap Hands” or “Jockey Full Of Bourbon”, which is great.
Moreoever, terrific recording.

“Not Yet” is a blinding good tune…some of the best vocals I’ve heard in a good long while…I was a bit surprised to see it’s only now getting press as it I thought it came out a decent amt. of time ago…all the same, glad it’s getting more exposure…check out the first album as well, The Runaway Found, the song ‘the wild son’ is tops as well…kudos to the gum for giving this some band some credit
Thanks for giving this great album some much needed attention. Pitchfork actually reviewed with higher marks than the new Artic Minkeys, which i did not expect.

Thanks for giving The Veils some attention – Nux Vomica and The Runaway Found are both great albums (although quite different from each other in tone), and it’s great to see a New Zealand band (although they’re based in the UK now) get a bit more love & exposure
Ahh, I’m so glad you running this. Nux Vomica is, hands down, the best album I’ve heard in the last three years. Finn Andrews is an amazing vocal talent. Pan is another great track on that album, but Jesus for the Jugular is out of this world.
