Continuing a run of shows that’s hit venues both intimate (Music Hall Of Williamsburg) and iconic (the Apollo Theater), Chan settled into Los Angeles’s Avalon Theater for two nights this week. Our photographer Andrew Youssef was there on the first night, telling us Ms. Marshall sounded typically smokey and soulful, and spent the night doing that Chan thing, facing the stage’s sides rather than the crowd. Opening the night was Fool’s Gold, a project comprising three members of Foreign Born and a love of various African pop forms: they tout love for benga (Kenya-based), juju (rooted in Nigeria), and the Congolese genre called soukous (mother of kwassa kwassa, maybe you’ve heard of it). Worth a listen over at MySpace (Ali Farka Toure is one of their top friends, if that helps you with their sound). Chan’s tour concludes tomorrow night (Friday the 13th) at the Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara.

Yeah, I agree. She also always looks like she’s taking a shit. All that effort to shit out crappy adult contemporary easy listening….

Is that her only shirt? She always wears that goddamn shirt when performing.

I agree, every time I see Cat Power she is wearing that shirt. No matter where she is, or what season it is, she has that god forsaken shirt on.

  5. It seems to me that no one realizes that she’s responsible for THE GREATEST. If someone makes an album like that then they can do all the half-ass covers they want.

Not to mention “You Are Free” and “Moon Pix”

  6. ‘You Are Free’, ‘Speaking For Trees’ and ‘The Covers Record’ are, in my opinion, amazing works, but… yes, Cat Power is awful now and I get the impression she has no desire to soon return to the minimal style I adore.

  7. I love Chan’s old minimalist type albums too but lets face it she’s 37 years old now and people change. I kinda dig her new soul stuff…in the very least her cover records show she has awesome taste in music

Fool’s Gold was by far more entertaining than Cat Power was
