We mentioned that BTW I Was A King recorded their latest LP, Old Friends at Daniel Smith’s Familyre recording studio in New Jersey. So it’s no surprise that the Norwegian duo have landed on the Sound Familyre label for the US release of their album (it came out in Norway in August). “Nightwalking” is, of course, a good companion for “Daybreak.” There’s less clatter around Frode Strømstads’s pleasingly layered vocals, but there are two Danielson-esque breakdowns, where it sounds as if all the instruments tumbled out of the back of the truck.
Old Friends is out 1/25 via Sounds Familyre.

I’m digging it. Except for the total atonal breakdown in the middle, which seems out of place in the midst of an otherwise effective pop song.
And though the drums are almost too frantic, I could certainly cut a rug to this…maybe with the Old Lincoln Log Hop, or the Col. Hastings Shoulder Shimmy.
Wow! Check out that album art! Must have been done by fellow Sounds Familyre labelmate, Vesper Stamper!
I agree with that breakdown. We get it, songwriters. It was unexpected, yet expected. We’ve all seen it before.
I think they should forget about that vocal part, and start over from scratch. First, construct a nice melody and then add the harmonies. If you’re going to have atonality in part of the song, you better balance it with a well thought-out melody.
