When we evaluated the Black Lips’ 200 Million Thousand, the general idea was catchy, interestingly textured songs, boringly predictable shtick. In the Chris Taylor-animated, drummer Joe Bradley-directed video for “Short Fuse” we get zero shtick, because the Atlanta band’s not around to pour their PBR on our heads or remind us they once went to a strip bar. Instead, it’s a literalist (and successfully vintage) take on the track: When Cole Alexander sings about eyes wide open, we see wide open eyes; the postman lyric brings the postman. We also see Humpty Dumpty have a great fall and, of course, plenty of (surprisingly handsome) short-fused TNT do its thing.

200 Million Thousand is out 2/24 on Die Slaughterhaus/Vice Music.

i hate the 2009 edition of pure rock n roll. it’s a throwback and it’s dull. but, divorced from pissing in their own mouths, it’s pretty clear the black lips write some good songs.

Seeing them for the first time Thursday. Hope it’s a good show.

Fun retro cartoon stuff….what’s not to like? A question that could be asked about the band in general….so back off on the “Premature Evaluation”-fueled Lips bashing. And yes, Chris Taylor is pretty much good at anything, plus he’s one of the nicest guys in music.

Cole Alexander looks like the cowboy in the Village People. That makes it an exceptional video!

I’m just not a fan. And the video was way too literal. It was corny. The style was cool though.
