Yesterday we gave you the Rock Band 2 version of Neko Case’s “People Got A Lotta Nerve.” Today we have Middle Cyclone‘s spare, sad title track and its fragile-sounding music box and Case’s lyrics about spilled water and internal storm clouds. Also, you saw how she went into the country with a bunch of pianos to make the record. After downloading “Middle Cyclone,” you can stream the whole collection and check out the results, including “Marais La Nuit,” which closes the album out beautifully with 30 minutes of a nighttime cricket chirps.
Stream the rest of the Cyclone at NPR.
Middle Cyclone is out 3/3 via ANTI-.

Yes! Thanks for the heads up.
This really is her best record yet. I’ve had an advance copy of it for a few days, and it’s all I’ve been listening to. Looking forward to dropping coin on the LP when it comes out. One of the best albums of 2009, no doubt.
phenomenal album. fox confessor will likely always remain my favorite, as it’s one of the most sublimely haunting collections of songs of the decade, but this is a truly worthy follow-up.
Listened to it twice. This one sounds like a winner. The last one was my album of that year. This may turn out to be my album of 09 if its not careful. Good stuff.
Can’t wait to see her in about a month!
Like Really, Really Good
Is this coming out on vinyl stateside, or is the UK import listed on Amazon the only way?
I’ve only seen it on Amazon so far. I’m sure they’ll probably release it in the US at some point in the near future. If not, I’m willing to pay the extra cost to import it.
Wow, someone with actual musical talent! A rarity on this site. Her new cd is very good. My fave will probably always be Blacklisted though.
I’ve been carrying my laptop with me from room to room streaming this album all morning and when it got to Marais La Nuit I brought it into the bathroom and got in the tub :) Beautiful album.
Trying to wait it out ’til 3/3/09… but it ain’t easy.
Same here. I’ll be waking up early and getting to the record store right as it opens before I go to work. Can’t wait. WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER!
I love this, even better than Fox Confessor. I might even buy it even though I’ve promised not to buy records from Obama supporters and she’s a big fan. At least she’s Canadian.
No, she’s an honorary Canadian, but was born and raised in the USA.
she went to art school in vancouver, hence being in the new pornographers, but was raised in the US of A
