We know you’re sick of a lot of things right now, maybe none more than the finale of the Sopranos, but we have to do this. What started as an e-mail chain about indie anthems that would have been superior to “Don’t Stop Believin’” turned into some slapdash nerdery, building a script for testing out different songs — paste a URL, hit submit, watch, argue. A few minutes later, work ground to a halt and we all ended up watching Carmela walk into the diner about sixty times, sometimes with funky old Children’s Television Workshop songs or really filthy zydeco. So, while you contemplate the imminent return of Journey (Jeff Scott Soto’s out, it’s apparently news that Steve Perry wanted to know how the song would be used, etc) and gauge the viability of referencing BASEketball or the Journey Atari game if this ever comes up in conversation again, we give you the power to be Chase for a Day and score the end of The Sopranos as you see fit. Share your soundtracking successes in the comments.

Instructions

Pretty simple, but you never know…

  1. Paste the full URL of any MP3 into the input box
  2. Click “Play It!”

NOTE: We’re not hosting any of the MP3s you submit. Your browser is loading and playing them, but someone’s paying for that bandwidth, so be nice.

By the way, stopping and starting the audio controller will stop and start the video player, but not vice versa, and they
can get out of sync. You’re smart enough to fool around with it on your own, though, so go nuts. You might find this useful if you don’t have any mp3s handy.

Get the Flash Player to see this movie.

Paste the URL of your MP3 here:

Justice – “D.A.N.C.E (Paste Black Remix)”

Audio Controller:

Songs we liked playing:

Some of our recent MP3s, for fooling around:

Just click to play ‘em.

include("/var/www/vhosts/stereogum.com/httpdocs/includes/sopranos_end_mp3s.html");
?>

With that, we’re off to Tennessee. Stereogum’s annual Bonnaroo coverage will kick off tomorrow afternoon or evening, depending on the wifi situation.

“the underdog” wins hands down. holy goosebumps! that was amazing.

  2. wow your right “the underdog” is the perfect song.

Definitely nice on that last bit for Spoon, but I’m actually liking Journey the best. I just think knowing the song, then hearing it like this, there’s an anxious vibe that seems to come out…like you immediately realize that it works perfectly as the song just kind of starts earnestly enough and just rolls along on that piano and the pace just fits with Tony sitting a bit nervously and anxious and yeah, I should probably stop the analysis right about there…all in all, Journey was a great choice, upbeat, uplifting, but a kind of nervous energy to it, fit wonderfully.

  4. DUH!  |   Posted on Jun 14th, 2007

“Another One Bites the Dust” by Queen

  5. Sarah  |   Posted on Jun 14th, 2007

Magic Position is pretty fun during the intro of the song, after that it doesn’t mesh as well.

  6. I don’t have an MP3 link, but I just tried it with Fountains of Wayne’s “Hackensack.” Fitting, in so many ways. If you do it right, the “I will wait for yooooou, as long as I need toooo” bit comes up when the rest of the fam is already there, and Meadow’s parking. Plus, at the beginning, when Carmella comes in, it’s cool cos they knew each other when they were young, just like in the song. Plus, “now I work for my dad…” Tony, now AJ… I win, bitches!

  7. Best thing ever!!!!
    Thanks :)

  8. This is great!

How about “No Cars Go” for Meadow?

    http://hypeful.com/wp-admin/mp3s/10%20No%20Cars%20Go.mp3

Or perhaps this l’il ditty for those who felt cheated by the ending:

Try this theme from yet another classic Italian stereotype.

  10. Watching this scene 20 times in a row makes me want some goddamn onion rings!

  11. I think Fake Empire works pretty well.

  12. I put the scene to Porcupine Tree’s “Sentimental” and the whole thing became very, very sad. Had David Chase used this, there would have been no ambiguity whatsoever. The family was gonna die.

Honestly, how do the fans who haven’t seen the finale yet even get by these days? Suckers.

  14. kinghater, it’s exactly the sort of finale that you can watch and watch without giving anything away. i still have to catch up on the whole season, but those 3-4 minutes don’t give anything important away.

  15. Shakey Dog by Ghostface is perfect because it starts to build up when the guy goes to the bathroom and the last time we see Tony’s face you hear a gunshot and when it goes blank, the song ends and Ghost says “To be continued…” which is fitting because it seems unfinished.

  16. bleep  |   Posted on Jun 14th, 2007

the underdog = pretty amazing, indeed.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has an old exercise CD (you can get it on I Tunes), including ‘Don’t Stop Believin” over which he yells exercise instructions and encouragement. I synced it up, and the results had me on the floor.

By the way, Holsten’s does not serve onion rings.

Kelly Clarkson Cancels Summer Tour… because nobody bought tickets? http://collegecandy.com/buzz/3523 Apparently, K.C and her gang want time to “re-evaluate her show’s size and scope, “which really means ticket sales were slumping and it was either play to half-capacity crowds or cancel the whole thing.

  19. maximumjack  |   Posted on Jun 14th, 2007

I’ve had “The Underdog” on repeat all week, and I’ve also had the Sopranos finale in my head all week. Combining them was transcendent. Thanks!

My favorite bit of synchronicity was the line “You will not back up an inch ever,” which played just as Meadow’s rear tire hit the curb.

It’s “Wizard of Oz”/”Dark Side of the Moon” for the 21st century.

  20. It doesn’t sync well, especially at the end, but when I saw this I immediately thought of Aeroplane:

I admit I liked the Journey. It’s about Tony. It’s not about me.

    try ‘monster mash’. CUPS!

  27. My pairing had Carmella shaking her head with disbelief that some guy was shouting about Annie Mac over Justice’s “D.A.N.C.E.”… fucking radio rips…

  29. Erin  |   Posted on Jun 14th, 2007

Wow, that Jana Hunter song in the playlist syncs pretty well. Underdog is still the very, very best, though.

  30. Don’t have an mp3 uploaded, but I think Ize of the World by the Strokes would be a good fit with its similarly abrupt and unexpected ending.

  31. Josh  |   Posted on Jun 14th, 2007

Crowded House’s “Hey Now (Don’t Dream It’s Over)” syncs almost perfectly…

when i did dfa79′s “sexy results” every time he said “my man wants to buy you something” it cuts to the “shooter.” hilarious!

I did Tuxedomoon’s ‘In a Manner of Speaking’, and it blew my fucking mind.

  34. Vincent Gallo  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2007

Holy poot! I just did Al Stewart’s ‘Year of the Cat’, and it blew my fucking mind too.

    Personal favorites:
    “Erotic City,” Prince
    “Rock’n'Roll Radio,” The Ramones
    “Let’s Dance,” Davie Bowie
    “Keep Yourself Alive,” Queen

The end of “Paradise By The Dashboard Light,” Meat Loaf (“Praying for the end of time,” etc.)

    Just because:
    “Young Folks,” PB&J
    “Mamma,” My Chemical Romance

This is one of those time I wished “White Rabbit” was a minute longer.

    mmm hello governator.

i always thought “sympathetic noose” by black rebel motorcycle club would go well with a scene like this. and it does!

    http://www.planetyahyah.com/chronicles/MP3/the%20verve%20-%20bittersweet%20symphony.mp3

The first song that popped into my head for this was “Bittersweet Symphony” by The Verve. Not only does the music really fit, but the lyrics are insane with this scene being the last:

“I can’t change…I’m a million different people from one day to the next…I’ll take you down the only road I’ve ever been down…try to make ends meet, you’re a slave to money THEN YOU DIE/” – cut to black – (even though I don’t think he was killed here)

  41. elton  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2007

“Rock Lobster” syncs the best by far. Try it and see what really should have replaced Journey. sorry to end the fun by putting the best possible choice ever.

  42. Aaron  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2007

i’d actually didn’t expect this to work at all. it’s not the greatest but it didn’t flow that bad.

  43. This is fun. I liked The Loose Salute, “Death Club”… MP3 from 5 Acts: http://www.box.net/shared/static/99d7beue2g.mp3

  44. Every Breath You Take matches up great.

  45. Crowded House. Goodness. I liked “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” Anyone else going to see them this summer? They are touring the US.

  46. how about – treat your mother right by mr. t?
    http://www.inzenity.com/mrt/snd/Treat_Your_Mother_Right.mp3

  47. I think the choice is awfully good but i may air the finale with “Men of good fortune” Lou Reed song.

  48. Calliwell  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2007

    One name:

    Imogen Heap.

  49. i put icky thump to it but the song is more dramatic than the end, her eyes kind of look dead like meg as a blinded prostitue.
(i don’t watch the sopranos by the way)

  50. Rick ASStley  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2007

Rick Astley fits nicely – David Chase: “You’ve Been RickRolled”

  51. Rainman  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2007

“Here” by Pavement. Almost scary how well this fits.

  52. The Stones – She’s a Rainbow…it completes me

  53. I did mine i with Ronnie Spectors “You Cant Put Your Arms Around A Memory” only thing I dont like about this is you cant hear the dialogue

  54. “No Surprises” by Radiohead has a nice sarcastic touch. As would be “Lucky” from OK Computer.
Another that I like is “I Will Follow You Into the Dark” by Death Cab for Cutie”

  55. Chad  |   Posted on Jun 15th, 2007

How about “Paint It Black” by the Rolling Stones. It is the perfect amount of time.

    http://globalgasm.digitalintimacy.com/audio/09%20-%20Paint%20It%20Black.mp3

  56. in my opinion, the final countdown actually syncs the best.

  57. Raging_Demons  |   Posted on Jun 16th, 2007

I just tried “New Slang” by The Shins. Sounds and looks pretty good.

    http://camsworld.e2blog.fr/camsworld/files/new_slang.mp3

First minute of the scene it synchs pretty good with “Boyz n Da Hood” by Dynamite Hack
    http://curbjaw.com/BiteTheCurb/Dynamite Hack – Boys in the Hood.mp3

Another good synch is The Legion of Doom’s “Crazy as She Goes” which is a mix of Gnarles Barkley “Crazy” & The Raconteurs “Steady as She Goes”. The “Crazy” part for Tony, and the “Steady” part for Meadow.

    New Pornographers Challengers

  60. aaron  |   Posted on Jun 18th, 2007

the final countdown does sync really well. but it’s no spoon

  61. Sisco  |   Posted on Jun 18th, 2007

I think two different songs worked pretty well, but not perfectly. The thematic choices and lyrics of the song worked better than the timing itself.

Teddy Thompson’s “I Wish It Was Over” was great.

So was Youth Group’s cover of “Forever Young.” A tad OC, but still usable.

And how is ANYONE fighting the fact that Tony was shot? I find it fairly obvious.

  62. it syncs up pretty well if the scene is about 5-7 seconds ahead of the music.

thought the instrumentals fit well with the pace of the scene…not necessarily the lyrics

  63. sorry…the song is boston by augustana.

I don’t know why the URL didn’t display.

    http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~gkwan/public/Augustana%20-%20Boston.mp3

  64. Eman  |   Posted on Jun 19th, 2007

This all goes to prove why he’s David Chase and you’re not.

  65. Sisco  |   Posted on Jun 22nd, 2007

I used the Mark Ronson and Lily Allen cover of “Oh My God” and it was actually insane how well it matched up. The lyrics are a pretty good match, but the shot changes hit it really well.

And there are some really well placed gun shots.

Also, leave it on loop (like with WMP or iTunes) for it to hit the ending well. It’s a tad too short.

  66. Norm Conquest  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

Big Daddy’s ’50s-rock cover of “My Heart Will Go On” (half Elvis, half Bill Haley). Pitter patter, tick tick indeed!
