David LaChapelle’s clip for Wino’s “Tears Dry On Their Own” is “Bittersweet Symphony” with more motel scenes, horns for strings, a beehive ‘do and a need for a mascara application intervention.

Awful. It squanders the energy of the song completely. Not that you have to hit every emotional cue with a visual, but man. The song hits its peak, and she’s just strolling down the street with no reaction.

it makes no sense to me how stereogum and its subscribers are so hard on amy winehouse. its a decent song first listen and much better than any of that hold steady, deerhunter shit you all rave about.

  3. cait  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

i love her. but too skinny!!

  4. mu  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

and we all know that bitersweet symphony was just massive attack’s unfinished symphony only with more aggro, less sunshine and set in england.

    *sympathy

  6. lohan  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

the verve video wasn’t this bad…

what a dud and I like this song.

  7. Mando  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

    Amen, issac.

  8. steve  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

wow, i loved this song the most when i first heard the record, but this video kills any palpability that the song actually has. i think i like it a bit less now that i know how apathetic she feels about singing it.

  9. nickbahulaisdead  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

    crap

  10. ed  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

at least her video is more entertaining than her “performances.” that is, if you consider standing in one spot on stage with as little movement as possible performing.

  11. Skatelip  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

That beehive looks angry. And belligerent.

I’m not really too hip (ok, not hip at all) but her style just makes me shudder. It reminds me of an ex-girlfriend who insisted on wearing a coat she hated to spite all the other people who said they hated it first.

  12. sol  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

can you imagine the weight of that hair over your head? ouch. i was distracted by that the whole time, the video is a bit boring

  13. dude  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

Amy Winehouse is the new Jane Child. SHE SUUUUUUUUCKS.

  14. Richie  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

This is the first time I’ve heard her… It’s alright, but it sounds like a nice imitation of something that was done 40 years ago.. I mean, it’s pleasant, but is there much to get excited about, besides her enormous hair?

  15. bc  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

    c’mon…. it’s a video full of hookers, she’s staying in a hooker hotel….. he walks away, etc…..

It all goes together. You guys need to hang out on the dirty streets for a while….. although hookers never look as good as they do in this video

  16. kooky  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

She was fun for about 15 minutes.
    Incredible voice, boring videos.

  17. cz  |   Posted on Jun 25th, 2007

I like the song a lot. She’s a sexy girl. The video is a bit bland but I guess it’s neat to actually see her. Let’s cut to the chase though: Stop it with that big ball of hair pinned to your noggin, Amy. In my opinion I don’t think it really comes off as “her own thing” or “retro cool” or “ironic cool” or “she’s so artistic”… it’s just plain “Check out that big ol’ ball of hair pinned to that girl’s head. I wonder how well it’s pinned on there? I wonder where she puts it at night. How does she clean it?”

I guess it could be her actual hair, in which case I’m imagining chicken wire underneath it.

I’m clearly obsessed with that thing.

Has anyone noticed that this is a really vulgar COPY of Marvin Gaye’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” in the background? Does she claims a copyright for this song?
Sorry for the people that think she’s alright, to me she’s just a hyped shitty performer (not even artist)

  19. Helen Keller  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2007

Even I noticed the similarity to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

  20. nick  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2007

this song is pretty great, but the beehive has got. to. go.

    its fucking repulsive.

  21. jazmine  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2007

i love this song and amy winehouse. i rather her be a great singer and a blah performer than a mediocre singer and a good performer. wish she could be both though.

  22. Ru  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2007

For the people say her performances are bad..think about it: real talent dont have to pull a britney spears..just stand there and sing. as for the vid..love the song..the vid will grow on me. i like it though..

  23. Deejayqueue  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2007

it’s not just similar, it IS “Ain’t no Mountain” part and parcel, every last note. They scrubbed the vocals, which were stellar, and then let her sing over them in some odd key that doesn’t make any sense. It sounds like the producer got lazy/ran out of ideas and just threw this together. It’s the weakest song on the whole album, and the video is weak to go along with it. The whole experience is like calling water with a melted brown crayon in it “coffee”.

I guess it wouldn’t be so bad, but the Funk Brothers never got any recognition for years, and only recently started to get acclaim for basically creating the motown sound. Then here comes Amy Winehouse and she completely shits all over this track, and doesn’t give any sort of credit or props to them for appropriating their song. Poor taste, poor choice, and poor Amy.

Small-hearted people with identity issues feel empowered when they can proclaim to the world that they think a particular song or artist sucks.

The world would be a better place if people were more tolerant of music they didn’t like.

  25. Steve  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2007

    People don’t pay attention apparently…

They’ve been very open (almost promoting it, actually) that the base of the song is an inversion of the chord progression from “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”). It’s cited in the liner notes, and she’s talked about how intimidating it was to sing over such an iconic song.

I personally think she did a great job with the song, but David LaChappelle either got lazy or was unable to corral Amy into a useful state and gave up.

  26. LazyFazyBreezey  |   Posted on Jun 26th, 2007

I got the same feeling when I heard James Cameron directed Marilyn Manson’s “Heart Shapped Glasses”…it’s the same a teacher must feel when she marks a test and reads that one of her student’s gave a really stupid answer on such a giveaway question.

  27. kat  |   Posted on Jun 27th, 2007

anyone remember her on her last album? god, she did not look like that. but i still really like her music.

  28. Mark  |   Posted on Jun 27th, 2007

I am a 48 yr. old male who recently heard Amy Winehouse’s Rehab song. I then saw her on the MTV Movie Awards and immediatley went out and purchsed her CD. She is the greatest thing to come along since Tina Turner. You people with the negative comments do not know good music. Her range and soul at 23 is unbelievable.

  29. ed  |   Posted on Jun 27th, 2007

“For the people say her performances are bad..think about it: real talent dont have to pull a britney spears..just stand there and sing. as for the vid..love the song..the vid will grow on me. i like it though..”

so, all the motown greats weren’t real talent? because they would perform the sht out of their music.

i doubt anyone wants/expects ms. winehouse to do a spears-like extravaganza but she might want to mix in something more than standing up.

  30. Ashley  |   Posted on Jun 29th, 2007

She has a good voice, I’ll give her that, but it’s nothing exciting. Turns out, this video is just about the most boring thing I’ve seen in a long time…and I do data entry for 40+ hours a week.

And basically, she looks like she’s in drag.

    I’m saying this with respect:
I had no idea that near 50 yr.olds visited Stereogum. Congrats Mark, you’re cooler than half of my 20 something generation.

  31. aria  |   Posted on Jun 29th, 2007

her music videos always suck, she never said she was an actress. she’s had one kind of ok music video her entire career, she always seems to be completely apathetic to what she’s singing about, but it’s about the music, mtv barely plays music videos anymore, the only place people really watch music videos is on youtube, so does it matter?

not really. it’s a good song.

  32. am  |   Posted on Jun 29th, 2007

she is such a lesbian common a tatto on her arm with breasts! druggy!

i dont understand anyone here. she’s the most orginal iconic and interesting pop star to surface since radiohead. blows fucking lily allen the national fucking grizzly bear and the other samey-sounding safe stuff out of the water.

motown sound singing about modern bohemian life with a john waters image… what couldn’t be more exciting than that???

  35. D.  |   Posted on Jul 2nd, 2007

She’s definitely a really good singer, I just find the arrangements on her album unlistenable for the most part. She deserves better than kitsch.

  36. Monica  |   Posted on Jul 20th, 2007

I love Amy! A great voice and songs to match..brings back an old sound and makes it modern for today..who cares if the look is not the norm!.I just hope she hangs in there with all the negative crap people say about her. She has talent and unique style and a voice. I just love her!

  37. aidannnn  |   Posted on Aug 17th, 2007

the hive’s doing my head in a bit, but her hair doesn’t make her personality or music any less fantastic.

    she is a legend!

  38. Jess  |   Posted on Sep 10th, 2007

I think Amy Winehouse has done some good songs as a singer, but really, I’ve always said it… it’s not worth covering or taking music of a song that was a perfect classic unless you really do creatively give it a totally different version that sounds good.

As an official record release, her version was nothing compared to the original Ain’t No Mountain – it sounds like someone improvising over the instrumental music version. Releasing that kinda music is a little cringeworthy!
