Since we’ve been in a TV state of mind of late we’re gonna just put it out there: Weeds has jumped the shark (yeah we’re bringing the phrase back) … BUT the Malvina Reynolds covers are always intriguing. And the Showtime folks are injecting a bit of spirit in the wilting Weeds with another fun run of artists you know and perhaps even enjoy, covering the show’s theme song “Little Boxes.” After a little multi-source sleuthing, think we’ve got some lineup action for ya.

First info comes from Zap 2 It:

The show’s third season will kick off on Monday, Aug. 13 with Grammy and Oscar winner Randy Newman singing the semi-classic Malvina Reynolds track.

Following Newman, in no particular order, will be Joan Baez, Donovan, Billy Bob Thornton, The Shins, Michael Franti, The Individuals, Angelique Kidjo, Kinky and Man Man, Persephone’s Bees.

At least four more singers are bound to be brought into the fold, since “Weeds” is producing 15 episodes for this fall.

So Kinky and Man Man collaborating? Or Zap2It should be more diligent with indie rock and commas? Anyway, Entertainment Weekly can fill in the lineup gaps, saying those additional artists include: Silversun Pickups, Linkin Park, and possibly Matchbox 20 (whose frontman Rob Thomas “made an eleventh-hour pitch to submit a cut from his band”).

Thomas tells the mag: “I like weed, and we had instruments lying around. It was a perfect match.”

Rob Thomas knows his drugs. Go here to find out where he gets his weed, what Willie Nelson’s supply is like, and how much you have to eat to stay fat while doing coke.

I third the “jumped the shark” sentiment towards Weeds. Of all of the shows on TV today, Weeds is mils away from any “shark-jumping”, they’re positively landlocked.
