After all the fuss over Zeitgeist and all the myriad ways in which Billy painted a giant bullseye on his showercurtain-vinyl-cape-thing, last night he reminded a room full of D.C.-area denizens why they still have love for the Pumpkins. Or at least, the moniker. At the 9:30 Club, Billy, Jimmy, John Cusack, and the bassist played their CD release party for those lucky enough to score tix, giving the kids a chance to sing about the beauty of that day and rats in cages in about as small a place as they’ll ever get to.

I was at the show, and it was a great one until encore number 2, which lasted for about 20 minutes, then I was ready to go home. My highlight was “Thirty Three” with Billy on acoustic and hot chick on keys, followed by an acoustic version of “Rocket.” Here is the full set list – the show was almost 3 hours long!

Zeitgeist is better than it had any right to be. I’m glad “The Smashing Pumpkins” are back.
F that…….”the smashing pumpkins are back”…..without D’arcy and Mr. Iha their just a parody of a band that was once great. Resurrected to make money (see four copies of zietgeist) and groom Billy’s ego (and wantabe relevancy) after the spectacular disaster that was his solo album and Zwan……Come on they really only had three good albums……..
Pumpkins did a club tour right before Machina. That was pretty cool.

like D’arcy and James did anything other than what Billy told them to do. Hey, I wish that one dude from Missing Persons was still in Duran Duran…oh, wait, no I don’t, because the PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY WRITE THE SONGS ARE STILL IN THE BAND. (Lame analogy, but I’m a lame guy).
Good point Ty – the pumpkins are NOT RELEVENT ANYMORE, it’d be like Soundgarden reuniting. Keep your dignity and go retire to your mansions. Amd to bp look up the word parody.
Good point Ty. The Pumpkins are NO LONGER RELEVENT. them reuniting is as about as smart as soundgarden doing so. Billy needs to retire to his mansion and be greatful that he was ONCE a great voice in music. Remember what happened when Jordan tried to come back???????

I saw the new Pumpkins at Primavera Sound, and I didn’t notice too huge a difference from my bootlegs of old Pumpkins, except that the new guitarist’s tone and style is a little blander than Iha’s was in late-era Pumpkins material. And I like the new record. And I wish that Pitchfork talking point about the four album versions would die. As though the band had anything to do with that, or for that matter, any choice, most likely.
Iha is an ass and incredibly boring to watch on stage. D’arcy is a crack head. Screw them both.
That show was a lot of fun. Mary Star of the Sea is a pretty good record as well. Why do neighsayers even show up to leave comments? What’s so bad about getting excited for your favorite band of all time? I miss James and Darcy too. In no way are they replaceable. But times have changes, so has the band. Who would have though I’d hear Starla live in 2007?

James and Darcy were completely replaceable, and were ultimately the downfall of the band. This band is stronger than the old band, and they are doing some amazing small shows for fans as a practice for the bigger tour. They are playing rarities and even making up songs at these shows. They also put a very strict anti-scalping measure on all of the tickets. If you buy the tickets, they are only will call, and you must enter right away. Plus the ticket limit is only 2. So how is that fucking over the fans, or going for a cash grab? The tickets to the shows are only $25-30(after service charges).
And yes they have four versions of the record out. They don’t expect everyone to buy 4 copies. Yes, there may be a select amount of uber fans doing that. But remember that back in the day people would pay $10×2 for a set of UK singles that only had three songs on it, and one was a song they already had. The point of four copies is that if four friends buy a copy each, they can trade each other the extra songs OR if you hear the extra tracks on the internet, you can choose the copy with your favorite b-side. That’s not that crazy.
What’s crazy to me is that you are quoting pitchfork like it’s republican talking points. Don’t believe everything you read there.
