There’s a lot going on lyrically on this cut from D.C. band the Caribbean. First there’s the scene setting: a lab experiment full of blue-painted sugar dishes and theories proven true. Action switches to our first-person loner, spending the 4th of July with a book (coincidentally called Bees, Their Vision And Language) about nature’s grand design. Then there’s the bit about “the joyous meeting of minds we all seek,” and all of it’s capped off with our hero being called a “plagiaristic Jew.”

Now, that’s a lot of epistemology, metaphysics, and antisemitism for 2:19, and we mention it because it had oh, nothing to do with why we dug it; we didn’t even listen to the lyrics ’til now! Here’s the deal: It’s got a spare jangle-and-drum thing going, with little quirks of wah’d guitar here, breezy harmonies there and such and such. Point is, you don’t even have to think if you don’t want to. The Caribbean will take your tired, weak, anti-intellectual and pretentious masses.

    Link doesn’t work.

How is calling someone a “Jew” anti-semitic?

  3. Context. Calling someone a “plagiaristic Jew” is certainly not meant to flatter. It is, at least, provocative.

  4. Beautiful…
