First single from the Weakerthans’ forthcoming, forth LP is a mellow affair, and it’s the best new tune you’ll hear today. It’s all about the rimshots (a surefire sign the proceedings will remain on the ‘lovely’ side of the spectrum), marking off an eighth-note pulse through the verses, before the toms and “full moon”s set the starry scene. “Night Windows” deserves a quiet night — and repeat spins…

The Weakerthans – “Night Windows” (MP3)

Reunion Tour is out 9/25 on Epitaph.

I second that emotion Sarah! Reconstruction Site wasn’t their best, but Left & Leaving is one of my favorite albums ever.

    I can’t wait for this!

    Reconstruction Site>Left & Leaving

Glad to see this band get some love on the ‘gum

Yay! John K. Samson = Best lyrics ever.

  6. Brilliant. One of my favorite bands EVER!

  7. The Weakerthans / Constantines double-bill show I seen a few years ago still stands as one of the best I’ve been to.

Those aren’t rimshots in the introduction/throughout the song, they are rim clicks (not to be confused with rim knocks). I think you are paying your fact checker too much.

red – i saw that tour in chicago.. you’re right.. both bands we’re so on.

i hate to double post… but whatever happened to the constantines?

  11. The Cons are in the studio as we speak. New album soon.

  12. The new Cons album is possibly the album I’m most excited for right now. I’ve heard 4 new songs live and they’re spitting pure gold. “King” might be the best ballad they’ve written and “Hard Feelings” is a great rocker in the vein of “Working Full-Time”. “Shower of Stones” and the one other are oh-so-gigantic. Can’t wait…

Hate to ramble, but the Cons have been my favourite ‘new’ Canadian band for quite a few years now.

wow it’s pretty cool to see some hometown guys mentioned on the ‘gum. i remember seeing the weakerthans at this big house party just before left and leaving came out. they played for three and a half hours before ending the set with “we don’t know any more songs. goodnight.”

  14. Sigh… this is good, very good.

” “Night Windows” deserves a quiet night ”

My thoughts exactly on my first listen, very reminiscent of Nightswimming by R.E.M.

I can’t seem to figure out why Pitchfork is always hatin’ on these guys. They gave both “Left and Leaving” and “Reconstruction Site” very unfavorable reviews…even more so for Reconstruction….which I think could be BETTER than Left and Leaving. Seriously, they need to pull their heads out of their asses.

As charming and witty and beautiful as always.

You know it’s with a great sense of pride that I can unequivocally state that my favourite band period is from my adopted hometown,Winnipeg.

Samson is pure genious as a songwriter with a voice and style that is so just his…he is sensitive, soothing but with a psychic edge that alaways keeps you wondering just how far he may wander.

Brilliang guy with a formidable band!!

  21. This tune had me mesmorised and as someone who owns the whole Weakerthans back cat, it really seems like they never fail to produce that perfect sound that has you looking stary-eyed at the world. I love it!
