Forget Arcade Fire, the Besnard Lakes, Feist, and Chad VanGaalen — a lot of you seem to think this year’s Polaris Prize belongs to Patrick Watson’s Close To Paradise. And so a lot of you are gonna join us in loving this. Patrick’s new clip sees the unabashedly Buckley-ish lush pop of “Luscious Life” paired with scratchy/flickering animation of a purging mind explosion, bookended by starry trips through the cosmos. Our cartoony hero has a moment of clarity! Behold, the illuminating power of caterwauling in 7/8.

  1. The man can do no wrong. His work on that newest Cinematic Orchestra album is breath-taking.

Kudos ‘gum on a PW post. Now, if only The Constantines were regularly featured…

  2. never noticed how jeff buckley-y he sounded before.

not as perfect as Arcade Fire. plus, watson also ripped off the Neighborhood #2 (Laika) video as well.

Can’t argue with Close to Paradise. I loved Jeff Buckley, so if Watson wants to imitate his vocal stylings – fine by me. For that matter, bring on a whole slew of musicians as talented as this guy.

  6. He also wrote and performed on a number of cuts of the Cinematic Orchestra’s new album, Ma Fleur. He has also toured with James Brown–the guy gets around
