Annie Lennox joined the American Idol parade last season, but we understand — gotta reach the great, teletubby masses. Now the ex-Eurythmics siren readies solo LP#4, titled Songs Of Mass Destruction (i.e. songs to play at your next MySpace house party!). “Dark Horse is our first listen, a typically theatrical ballad informed by producer Glen Ballard’s warm, FM-friendly tone tweaking. This is Annie in I’m-strong-enough-on-my-own mode, singing about open, shady roads to tread on her lonesome, flashing a little vulnerability and, for a few bars, a little aggression (hey hey hey).
Annie Lennox – “Dark Road” (QT | WMA)

Songs For Mass Destruction is out 10/2 on Arista. It’s got some shitty album art, but guess it’s typical Annie.

Is this slowly turning into an adult contemporary blog? A James Blunt video? An Annie Lennox song?
It’s turning into smooth jazz, actually. Thanks for noticing!
None of you like Annie Lennox? (This song is weak compared w/ Diva though.)
Hey, anything to break up the typical crap-o-the-month hype indie band stuff, I’m for it. At least Lennox has/had some staying power… plus, it’s a music blog, right? Go ahead and dish out some zydeco news, man.
I think some of us like Annie Lennox, but . . . we can get this information from a host of more “mainstream” sources. It will be covered copiously by Rolling Stone, the NYT, &tc. It’s just that, say, a year ago, Stereogum was the place to go for news and music comprising the indie best.
It’s more than that now–the good stuff is still there, but it’s mixed in with uttter pap. It’s frustrating to see Jens Lekman and the Stereogum triumph OKX (possibly the apex of the site)mixed in with James Blunt (seriously–that’s pathetic), Counting Crows, and 50 Cent news.
There’s a delicate balance between folding in information on pet bands that have mainstream appeal (I’ve always cracked up over the Van Halen focus) and the “must update constantly” Rolling Stone vibe the site has picked up in recent months. If you glance at the mp3 feed, it’s strong indie, but the “Video Hangover” feature (which I do not care for), is glutted with mainstream pop and rock.
I think there’s just the sense that Stereogum has lost its indie focus and become much broader in what it addresses.
i will always have the eurythmics and annie’s first solo disc. oh and her song for Lord of the Rings was TERRIBLE.
PS: i think its funny that dave stewart’s label on interscope is weapons of mass entertainment.
gorjus: B+
Um, yeah … bring back the constant Britney Spears updates. What?
I’m surprised that there aren’t more closet/indie Lennox fans out there. Someone’s got to appreciate the fact that her album covers play on the fact that she’s got some WEIRD skin tones. (Courtesy of Photoshop)
Having somewhat started this thread, I’ll jump in to back up what gorjus said. Alex, if you’re sick of the “typical crap-o-the-month hype indie band stuff,” maybe you should go elsewhere. Even with stuff like Counting Crows incongruously thrown in (do I smell new infusion money payola???), the majority of this site still deals with lesser known stuff.
I’m fine with lesser known stuff, prefer it actually, but the smell of hype is ripe when a band gets posted over and over and, really, the mp3s don’t seem to match the implied talent. If anything I wish there was less posts and more focus on the up-and-comers that don’t get a lot of mention. I think Gum does slip those in there, but the posts are crowded by other fluffy stuff. I suppose I remember the Gum years of the past too much.
In essence, I agree with ‘gorjus’ about the direction of this site and its overdosing of content. But I’ll live with it and balance it out with some other sites that have a better layout along with more concise things to say.
Annie Lennox is an ICON.She is one of best female vocalists and artists. She has transcend decades. Indie.? Listen to eURYTHMICs’s 1st album IN THE GARDEN.Sure she may not be that cutting edge anymore but she still has the IT factor. Go ANNIE!!
I’m with Lawrence. Annie Lennox is it.
As much I adore Annie Lennox (for almost 25 years now), her voice and unique talent, I have to admit, with obvious sadness, that “Dark Road” is nothing but huge disappointment.
I know, I know… we all have been waiting much too long for her new album. But get real people! “Dark Road” is nothing else than “Loneliness, part 2″. ?Pavements Cracks, part 3?. Both, lyrically and, even more disappointingly, musically!!!
I know, I know? she went through hard time. Nothing new. But I really hoped that ?Bare? was the closing door to those dark experiences. I hoped that eventually she can revive herself and us with her music. After all those sorrows?
And there she is again. Moaning, moaning, nothing intelligent like ?Here Comes The rain Again?, witty like ?Would I Lie To You?, or ironic like ?Don?t Ask me Why?.
Don?t we have enough of our own sadness and darkness?
Don?t we have enough that the world?s gone crazy?
As much as I was awaiting her new album, ?Dark Road? put me off totally.
Sad?
Great track
Good vocals good melody
Life isn’t all gumballs and ice cream cones. Annie sings from the heart and soul, places that so many artists today forget to include in their work. She continues to amaze me whatever she sings about. If you ever saw her live, you’d never forget it. ANNIE, YOU ROCK!
I’m 13 years old so you imagine I wasn’t alive in the 80′s when Eurythmics used to sing but I’m still a big fan and now that Eurythmics don’t sing anymore my fav is Annie Lennox. She DOES sing, that’s a real artist(not brit, paris, rihanna and so on)ROCK ON,ANNIE,SHOW THEM WHAT REAL MUSIC IS LIKE!!!love her eyes…still beautiful
Annie Lennox album covers are all classics, as are many Eurythmics covers. I don’t think “shitty” is an accurate description, by a long shot.
wat the hell is all this shit above – annie lennox and dave stewart paved the way for music all thru the 1980s and alone annie containued to in the 90s ….she has more accolades as a female artists and together eurythmics have more brits alone than any other artists! im reading wat yal are putting but just think, wat!?
What is all this “I know, I know…”?! Clearly, “trigger” you know very little about which you speak! “Dark Road” is NOT a rehash of tracks from Annie’s 2003 effort BARE. Lyrically speaking, “Loneliness” is far more complex than “Dark Road”, same can be said of your other comparison “Pavement Cracks”. No, “Dark Road” is simple, elegant, powerful and STUNNING! We have followed Annie Lennox for over twenty-five years and this new one is [without doubt] her finest single! Annie is THE QUEEN of British Pop…long may she reign!
The most amazing voice I have EVER had the honor to experience is back and still going strong. Good meaningful songs are not as common as they once were, luckily for us Annie still can make one. This song is so intense and emotional it is not difficult for me to FEEL the lights and darks of Dark Road. This is truly an amazing song from the finest artist I have had the privilege to connect with. The video is not her best (my opinion)…but the song is a good next step for her.
PS…In response to the comment up the line
-Into The West & Use Well The Days (Rings) were both breathtaking.

Sorry, I guess that most of you do not really know what they are talking about.
You have listened to ONE song from Mrs. Lennox’ new Album and so you say that the whole album is ful of depression, sadness and bad atmosphere.
Well, as you can see the album offers you more than one song and so you should wait with your comments until the album is released on October 1st.
Maybe not all songs are full of sadness and depression!?
Besides: Why shouldn’t an artist sing about the bad things in the world?
I think Lennox is somebody who really cares about injustice and poverty in the world and who tries to fight against these things. Why shouldn’t she sing about this?
I had the chance to listen to “sing”, a song that she produced with 23 female artists (e.g. Madonna, Shakira, Beth Gibbons..) and I can only say that there is no other female artist who makes poltical music as Mrs. Lennox. In my opinien many people would finally realize what a wonderful artist she is, when she wouldn’t be there once.
The fight against HIV and poverty in Africa would never be so much in the medias in Europe and the USA without her!!!
So, please wait with your comments about the new album is released and can be heard from song 1 to sing 11!
While you are waiting you should check
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/mainframe.shtml?http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/radio2_aod.shtml?radio2/r2_annielennox
and listen to Lennox on a live performance…maybe some of you will realize that she is one of the best femalse artists that the world offers to us at the moment!!
Rock Annie, rock!
Well, I still have to add something.
Yes, Annie Lennox appeared at the American Idol show. but if you mention this you should also mention what she did there:
Annie Lennox wasn’t there to show her pretty face in front of some cameras. she was there to talk about a programm against HIV in Africa.
She didn’t use the big audience of the show for herself, she used it for a good thing, the fight against this terible illness!
I don’t know why you are describing her appearance on the show as something bad!?
Besides she did a really good performance of “Bridge over troubled water”.
I’ve listened to the concert on bbc.co.uk/radio2!
What a great singer she is! Fantastic!
Adult contemporary ?… Smooth Jazz ?… Mmmm… Good for you and for me!!!!!I’m in, RIGHT NOW!
Excellent page. Congratulations !… and go on!
Anyone who thinks Annie Lennox is “adult contemporary” hasn’t explored the music deep enough. It’s a convenient tag, and a way to categorize easily, but it doesn’t represent the whole truth. Her music is very deep and layered – much more so than your typical coffee house singers and Clear Channel playlist veterans.
Does anyone know if Annie sang the end theme from Apollo 13. If not Annie, then who? Thanks for your help.
Hello!
Born and brought up in N. Ireland. I went to college, then immigrated to Canada in 1973.
I was a professional disco dancer during the period, roughly, 1970 to 1972, in and around N. Ireland before I left for Canada.
Work/professional life has gone in a completely different direction since then — when I look back, it seems as if this could be an original story within the context of the period.
I would be greatly interested to hear your response, Annie.
You don’t know until you try!
Let me know what you think.
Kind regards,
Carole
