The weekly Devendra party got going as scheduled Friday evening over at MySpace, where another two tracks from Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon started their seven-day streaming window. Head over now to get a listen of Devendra singing in English on the reggae of “The Other Woman” and singing in not English on the samba of “Samba Vexilographica.” After that, head to his site for a video in which Dev rhapsodizes regarding the excellence of scones.

is anyone else annoyed by this doofus? rejoicing in the hands and nino rojo were good and all, but everything after that and live..ugh.
I like the version of colarado girl he butchered on the Townes Van Zandt doc.
I like Nino Rojo – Rejoicing In The Hands & Cripple Crow are alright, but didn’t blow me away. Overall, wouldn’t call myself a fan, but I’ll probably still get this new one.
Sometimes I think the whole hippie-freakster thing he does gets a little pretentious. I bet he kills loads of bugs when no one is watching. I bet killing insects gives Devendra a secret erection.
I can put up with him when he’s writing great songs (like on most of his first 3 albums) but when his songwriting gets lazy the caricature hippie shtick aspects of his personality start to become grating.. The new songs I’ve heard are nice enough but a lot of it seems to have a kind of workmanlike genre-surfing aspect to it, like he’s just crafting passable tributes to his catalogue of 60s and 70s influences without really stamping his own imprint on it (this was the main problem I had with Cripple Crow). I’m hoping he still has a bit of the magic from his earlier albums left in him because he clearly has a degree of talent, under the sometimes off-putting image.
Dude is a totally creepy creep. Icky songs! Icky beard!
