Village Voice Pazz & Jop Top 50 Albums Of 2010

Just when you thought we were done with 2010 lists, the Village Voice went and published the results of their 38th annual Pazz & Jop poll. This year it combined the votes of 708 music critics, did some complex mathematics, and arrived at the same No. 1 as everyone else. That said, the list features plenty of albums not often spotted on other year-enders, a nice example of the individual vs. the editorial board.

In addition to this list, a top singles list, and individual contributor ballots — me, Amrit, Jessica — there are fine Pazz & Jop-related essays at VillageVoice.com. Start with Zach Baron’s “Rise Of The Douchebags” then never say the words “Kanye West” again.

  2. Nice to see Jonsi finally make one of these lists.

  3. awesome list

  4. I’m with ya on the worship of that f*ckin’ hack Kanye. The year in music wasn’t great but there were a ton of releases better than that turd of an album.
The media needs to quit sucking up to this tool(including Stereogum).

  6. Don’t know if I trust lists that are formulated rather than arrived upon, but I am happy that every album in my top 25 appeared somewhere within, mostly found around the 400s.

  7. Top 5 is flawless. Great list.

  8. End-of-year lists are so… hmm… well… last year.

But much respect to this list since they included my favorite album of 2010 on the 4th spot. :D

  9. This list holds absolutely no value for me. Taylor Swift is at 26 while great bands/artists like Josh Ritter, Junip, Avi Buffalo, Tunng, Matt Costa, Broken Bells, and The New Pornographers don’t make the list. WTF is this sh*t. Don’t even get me started on another list putting Kanye first.

    • Why does a list only hold value to you if it matches your own personal opinions? Can’t a list, particularly a list like this that aggregates the opinions of hundreds of critics and therefore presents a reasonably accurate summary of critical opinion in 2010, be valuable for giving you something to compare your own opinions to?

But no, you’re right. Your opinions are entirely true and accurate, and other opinions are only valuable insofar as they match your own.

      • Even if the bands I mentioned didn’t make the list the point still stands that I’m shocked that Taylor Swift is on the list let alone at number 26.

  10. Swap Sleigh Bells with Titus Andronicus and that Top 10 is perfect.

  11. I feel like i’m the only person in the world who got bored of LCD with this album.

  12. I am absolutely shocked by this list. Kanye first and LCD Soundsystem second? my mind has been blown… (and to the other people who mentioned LCD soundsystem, they are, in fact, overhyped garbage in my opinion).

  13. good to see Taylor Swift right on top of Caribou… haha. i didn’t realize that people took albums from an artist like her seriously.

  14. Sharon Jones is dutch now, is she? News to me.

  15. Fairly solid list. I’m tired of these though so hopefully this is the last one, at least for 2010.

As for everyone that comments on these just to bash the Kanye album, if you don’t like the album then don’t listen to it. There’s no need to say over and over again how much you hate it and how bad it is. Besides, you’ll need some of that negative energy to spew at Watch The Throne when that hits in March.

  16. I thought it was mutually accepted that M.I.A.’s new album was bad, at least in comparison to her other albums. I think Jonsi Go and Surjan Stevens Age of Adz should be higher on the list, some of the artist I don’t agree with but other then that I pretty sound list.

  17. This list pales greatly in comparison to ones from previous years. These entries feel mostly formulaic and unsurprising. A disappointment. Not that anyone needs shallow rankings to distinguish a great album from a disposable one anyway.

  18. I’m pretty surprised that Broken Bells didn’t make the list. Their a phenomenal and the put out a great record this year. I mean, come on, they were nominated for a GRAMMY!? This deserves a rethink. If you haven’t heard it yet, you can get it now on amazon for like 5 bucks.

  20. the underground whent overground but the new undeground which is the true old underground and the only underground is secretly thriving

  23. Well, at least Janelle’s high up there. I can only hope that one day she’ll get the fame and adulation that Kanye’s getting now.

  24. about time someone let Kanye be #1. Say what u want, but he makes great music, and its time for him to be recognized as one of the best overall artists this past decade, and eventually, of all time. Fuck all u haters.
