The White Stripes Break Up

So much for the reunion. According to an announcement on their site (which is currently down), Jack and Meg explain that the breakup is “not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.” Jack will continue releasing rare White Stripes recordings (and ostensibly battling ebay flippers) via Third Man’s subscription club. You’ll be able to read the statement at whitestripes.com, once the site’s servers recover. Or you can read it here:

  1. So they’re not brother and sister anymore?!

  2. That image is entirely non-readable.

  3. will miss. good records.

  4. Even though I honestly haven’t listened to The White Stripes in years, it still makes me feel a bit…sad? Sad is not the word. But there’s a sense of nostalgia or something when I read this. They used to mean a lot to me at some point in my life. :(

  5. Last time they came to my area they cancelled their show. I will never have a chance to see them live. This is why I’m sad about it. They had a good run though, and they made some amazing records. So I’m happy to have been along for the ride while it lasted.

  6. I wonder how long it will be until the Greenhornes go back on hiatus

  7. Stupid reason. Like they´re afraid to fuck up the holy White Stripe-rep. Well sad not to hear anything new from them. Not so interested in what they can squeeze out from different mixings of old tracks. That’s so 2010. :)

    • Touche. There seems to be quite a bit of underlying tension that we’ve been censored to, and I believe this was their attempt to bow out gracefully. But their ‘capricious’ reasoning doesn’t really support their claim to preserve the/their legacy of art and identity.

  8. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t see this coming. It’s still pretty sad though. :/

  9. What a bummer. I like his other projects, but he was def at his best with the White Stripes. Glad I got to see them last tour at least.

  10. This f****ing sucks.

  11. NO
    I CAN’T EVEN

    IT’S JUST

    NO

  12. If they could just make good on their last tour. I had tickets, then they cancelled! just one more farewell tour? wouldn’t be so bad would it?

  13. I was sad for three seconds then realized all we’re losing is Meg. Jack White is the genius and he’s still constantly around. Bring on the Jack White solo album.

    • If that’s the case then why haven’t The Raconteurs or The Dead Weather released anything as good as anything in the WS catalog?

      • I agree with your point, but I think at least the Raconteurs have the potential to do something of classic caliber.

        • Frankly, I got the chance to see the Dead Weather live, and I know it’s not the same, but it was still amazing. The entire point of Jack White is to be different every time; if he went up and played Seven Nation army with anybody other than Meg, it would completely ruin what they had.

Still, I’m sad to hear they’re gone.

  14. It’s cool, I’ll just catch the headlining reunion show at Coachella 2013.

  15. Meg is pregnant.

  16. Well it was good while it lasted. Jack is still playing in other bands and thats really all I could ask for.

  17. Hidden due to low comment rating. Click here to see.

    • Call it “style,” The White Stripes had a cartoonish innocence/edge that can’t be replicated. Not by Jack or anyone else. They got away with what many would call a gimmick, but they backed it up with the tunes. This “style”, sadly, was as essential to the tunes as the tunes were to “style” and it will be missed. Maybe we’ll get a vinyl version of “Get Behind Me Satan” somewhere down the road. Just wish they didn’t end on Icky Thump and wait 3 years to tell us to stop waiting for a follow up. I’m disappointed but grateful for the awesome music.

  18. There are very few bands that have a discog as consistent and classic as theirs. But I too do wish for one more album.

  19. I really don’t find Jack White’s other projects as interesting as The White Stripes. I think the simplicity of The White Stripes forced him to write better songs.

  20. This totally sucks, but I really appreciate their reasoning. They gave us all many great albums and quit while they were ahead. Much love and much respect from the Blue Man. Now bring on the Meg White solo album!

  21. They’ll get back together in a couple years when they discover they make more money together than apart.

  22. This is as if I didn’t show up for work in four years then call my boss to let him know I quit.
