  1. urban hymns by the verve really should be on here somewhere.

  2. Dirt by Alice In Chains as well…

  3. I think I would have had Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating in Space at #1. But Screamadelica is itself a very druggy choice.

  4. wow what a stupid list. also icky mettle should be on there.

  5. Whoa, Bardo Pond. That’s accurate but out of nowhere in comparison to the other albums. They’re soarly lacking in metal.

  6. Where’s Sweet Smoke’s Just a Poke ?

    • Couldn’t agree more- in fact if they’d involved any krautrock or 60′s bands this list would be very different. on that note, where’s the grateful dead on this list? A pretty obvious one methinks.

  7. I know the list is a bit light hearted but Elliot Smiths self-titled 2nd record is a pure love letter to heroin.
Needle in the hay, White lady, Alphabet City, St Ides Heaven, etc…

    • What a depressing and beautiful album, one of my all-time favorites. I think it was the best thing he ever did.

Ooh, and on that note, how about The Boatman’s Call by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds?

      • Elliott Smith=My greatest love ever, but I don’t really think that his self titled Ep was a love song to heroin. Although It has a lot to do with addiction and certainly heroin, I would argue it is not portrayed in a positive light.

  8. i agree with Elliot Smith. Tha Carter III more influence by drugs than needle in the hay?

  9. NEW FLASH: the nme is shit and makes stupid fucking lists

    wowzers

  10. I think Suicide’s self titled album sounds like a BAD trip, but it should be on this list. I can’t even bare to listen to ‘Frankie Teardrop’ because it scares the crap out of me. The album is awesome, though.

  11. THE THE ~MIND BOMB should defo be in there as its a corker of a trip into the psyche of Matt Johnson and so relevant today as it was when it was released.

  12. Wow, this list is just really stupid. Sex Pistols?

  13. so basically women don’t smoke weed

  14. Anyone who knows anything about loveless knows that that album had very little to do with drugs and a whole lot to do with insomnia. The album is meant to simulate the hypnagogic state.

  15. this is seriously the shittiest list I have ever seen. No Kyuss, Husker Du or Sleep?

  16. Animal Collective? Flaming Lips? Aphex Twin?

British people are retarded about music sometimes.

    • LOL @ MAN JUDGING ENTIRE COUNTRY ON BASIS OF A PARTICULARLY POOR ARTICLE FROM A TEEN PINUP MAGAZINE

We prefer to be judged on our bad teeth, toadying politicians and barely remembered past glories. ;)

That out of the way…a better title for the list would be ’50 albums from the nice price section of a supermarket, by bands who were known to dabble in the odd line of coke’

Not really expecting anything of major journalistic merit to come out of an NME top…anything, but it would have been nice if someone who actually knew something about music had dropped some off the beaten path gems in there for the kidz to check out.

  17. Screamadelica should be number 2.

Bitches Brew by Miles Davis should’ve been number 1 but is no where to be seen. Sad.

    • For real on this. Putting Kind Of Blue on the list at all is sort of depressing. Wasn’t it recorded during a relatively clean, post-heroin/pre-cocaine binge era in Miles’ life? And the music itself isn’t particularly druggy at all, unless you consider anything related to jazz as such because it doesn’t have lyrics and pop song structure.

Clearly the NME editors are a bunch of philistines.

  18. And of course all of Ween’s albums were made while stone cold sober.

  19. Anything by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beach House’s Teen Dream, LCD Soundsystem’s This Is Happening, MGMT’s Congratulations to name a few that should have been mentioned.

  20. how is it possible that there is no early animal collective or any black dice on this list?

  21. Cryptograms from Deerhunter should have been on there!

  22. I guess NME has never heard of Cream.

  23. Considering the fact that Bowie cant even remember recording what is disputably his greatest album whatsoever, I feel as though Station to Station should at least be within the top 3, if not #1 on this list.

  24. And why the hell aren’t The Flaming Lips on this list for The Soft Bulletin and/or Yoshimi? Oh I see why.. this list was done by NME and they fuckin suck. That explains it.

  25. Fleetwood Mac – Tusk is so strange in parts. Solid album though

  26. Movin’ on Up is my feel good song, always puts me in a good mood. Anyways the list is just overall pointless, and even if it had mattered their missing some major drug trip albums.

Also, Tame Impala’s Innerspeaker should be on here.

  27. FUCKING LOVE SCREAMADELICA.

  28. Also, there isn’t enough new music on here. There’s your biased NME for you.

  29. “OMG This list SUCKS! Why isn’t _____________ on there??!!!”

Because there are hundreds of druggy albums and only 50 slots on the list, idiot.

  30. I don’t understand Tha Carter III being on there. Also they chose the wrong MGMT album.

  31. How about SFA’s Fuzzy Logic. Fer Chrissakes, it has a song called “Hanging With Howard Marks” and another sung that’s a back and forth between a guy who has hooked up a generator to a hamster wheel and the actual hamster! Also, something about Super Mario Brothers and getting stitched up in Everton.

  32. “Aoxomoxoa”

  33. The Grateful Dead. Phish. MF Doom. Kool Keith.

  34. Not my favorite, but The Unseen by Quasimoto (Madlib) was “conceived and recorded by Madlib during a week long psilocybin mushroom binge”

    so props for that

  35. 1. Ween – The Pod

  36. we should think that these guys have never-ever heard something called reggae and some guy called Bob Marley, don’t they???

  37. all of you need to step out of your patriotic shoes and realize this is a british magazine, an ACTUAL printed magazine, not some silly blog with opinions and obsessions with chill wave…

plus elliot smith was a little bitch and could not handle his drugs, same goes with wavves, Lil wayne on the other hand is way better at taking drugs

  38. You guys have mentioned a lot of good druggy albums…. Let me throw mine in.

    - Shpongle- Are You Shpongled?
    - Shpongle- Tales of the Inexpressable
    - Shpongle- Nothing lasts… But Nothing is Lost
    - Shpongle- Ineffable Mysteries From Shpongle Land

What can I say… they take me weird places on drugs.

    • I may or may not have listened to Shpongle while watching fractal visualizers on a projector. Thumbs up, Baboon Cock.

    • DUDE! i was just about to post about Shpongle. Indie Electronica lovers really ought to learn about Shpongle. Let me offer my opinion on the best access points:

Album: Nothing Lasts… But Nothing is Lost
Songs: Nothing Lasts, Divine Moments of Truth, Dorset Perception, Nothing Is Something Worth Doing,

      • Come to think of it, regarding their most recent album, even more accessible for the Indie Electronica lover than “Nothing Is Something Worth Doing” is “No Turn Un-Stoned”.

  39. This list makes NO sense at all.

  40. At least they included Revolver, but what about Sgt. Pepper’s?! That album is more drenched in weed and lcd than probably anything else on this list.

    • No they aren’t, they are just very famous.

There are a bazillion more druggy albums that would be ahead of a couple of albums by a pop band who liked the odd bifter.

  41. Also, I love how the most commented post is all about drugs. Get your minds out of the drug-gutter stereogumies.

  42. Hard not to have AIC’s “Dirt” on this list. And while Oasis’ “Be Here Now” was a thick-layered mess b/c those guys were too coked up, I don’t really see it as a drug album.

  43. As I posted on Facebook when I shared this, ANYTHING by Cypress Hill should be AT LEAST #2…….. but what about Vanilla Ice “Mind Blowing”? LOL. Just sayin’. I did not post the Vanilla Ice part on FB. I have my standards.

  44. Miles Davis – Bitches Brew is way druggier than Kind of Blue.

  45. Missing:

The Lemon of Pink by The Books
    Up In Flames by Caribou/Manitoba

  46. “Drugs are bad, mmmkay.”

  47. 22 Johnny Thunfers and the Heartbreaker – L.A.M.F

    *Thunders

    **Heartbreakers

  48. I love how just because Metal Machine Music was Lou Reed’s ‘Instrumental and experiemental’ album it is automatically thought of as a drug album, forgetting the fact that it was his time with The Velvet Underground and his first couple of solo albums when his Heroin use was at its most prolifiic.

    • White Light/White Heat is the number 3 album…

    • “Though later admitting that the liner notes’ list of instruments is fictitious and intended as parody, Reed maintains that MMM was and is a serious album. He has since stated though that at the time he had taken it seriously, he was also ‘very stoned’.”

Stoned enough to make an album consisting entirely of feedback.

  49. Further evidence that NME use their influence in youth culture to praise drug-use. Naughty, naughty.

Not only that, it’s a shit list! Douchebags!

  50. gay list. almost capsized.

  51. Ha ha, that’s just a list of albums.

  52. da fuck is miles davis doing on this list.

  53. Bag of bollocks and catnip!! klaxons hahahahahah. Sniffing Peaches Geldof’s crusty skids. If that’s druggy then they’re in!

  54. download-furnace
    meat puppets-meat puppets ii
    failure-fantastic planet

  55. No Flaming Lips and no Pink Floyd? Your list sucks.

  56. Antichrist Superstar…instead of Mechanical Animals? The album is basically Manson detailing about how awesome drugs are. I mean, there’s even a song called “I Don’t Like the Drugs (But the Drugs Like Me)”.

    Also…Morphine? Cure for Pain?

    • Morphine for sure. At a higher spot on the list than Elliot Smith should be.

Portrait of an American Family would be my choice over either of those Manson albums.

  57. This list reminds me why I wouldn’t wipe my arse with the NME these days, let alone read the thing. No Gong? No Floyd? No Hawkwind? No Reggae AT ALL? But there’s room for Elton John and the Sex Pistols…

  58. At the risk of showing my age/tastes Cheap Thrills by Big Brother and The Holding Company, Electric Music For The Mind And Body by Country Joe and The Fish, Sailor by Steve Miller Band, Axis Bold As Love by Jimi Hendrix, Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, It Crawled into My Hand, Honest by the Fugs, and Sunshine Superman by Donovan all deserve a place on the list – not to mention The incredible String Band, Jethro Tull, The Animals (Winds Of Change), and Infrared Roses by the Greatful Dead.

I agree with Morphine BTW and aren’t there some great speed related works in the C&W catalogue?

  59. hmmm who are the fifty greatest athletes who lifted weights?

  60. Whoa. What a shitty list!

  61. Clearly those good folks over at NME haven’t done a lot of drugs in their lifetime.

  62. Alright this list is total bull shit. Where are the drug-dedicated albums by drug-dedicated bands? I can list a bunch off of bands the top of my head–in the metal genre alone! Bongripper, Bongzilla, Sleep, Cephalic Carnage, Weedeater, Down, Electric Wizard, Choking Victim, Leftover Crack, etc etc. Though admittedly those last two are punk/ska and pretty much the same band. Making a point here. The list sucks dick.

  63. Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality should be #1 by the way

  64. How is The Perfect Prescription not on here?

  65. If velvet underground didn’t make the top 3, I would have raised an eyebrow. Alas, for once I will be okay with a top list.

  66. Niandra LaDes and Usually Just A T-Shirt. Frusciante sounds like he could drop dead at any point throughout the album …
