From this article:

The ultimate is “Less Than You Think.” It’s a pretty, conventional song for three minutes then ends with a 12-minute, machine-made drone that would test anyone’s patience.

The song is about free will and is partly an inside joke; the band wanted the longest song on the album to be called “Less Than You Think.” It also compels audience participation.

“It was another way to encourage listeners to exercise their free will – to get up and turn it off,” Tweedy said.

At least they admit it’s annoying. The rest of the album is growing on me. The intro to “Hell Is Chrome” is so Music From Big Pink. And I like that song that goes 123456789. 123456789!

Finally, someone else who likes “I’m a Wheel.” Every other review I’ve read has singled it out as the weakest track. For those keeping score at home, the best song is “Theologians,” and my least favorite is “Kidsmoke.”

  2. Yeah! The review I just read (I think Entertainment Weekly) singled out ‘I’m A Wheel’ as the weakest track. They’re crazy.

“Late Greats” does it for me with “Hummingbird” a close second

I love me some Wilco, but this guy does a good job of articulating my biggest gripe with the band. Bring back Jay Bennett!

Or to put it more cryptically, put down the Ginsberg book and step away from the microphone.

  5. Hummingbird seems to be my favorite one right now. Anyone catch the band on Letterman?

  6. Yeah, I’m a Wheel was the only decent song they played at Summerstage last year. Most of the time Tweedy sounds like M.J. Fox in Back to the Future on guitar, like when he sees his family disappearing from the picture during “Earth Angel”

That Summerstage show was a bore. I seem to remember everyone being so bored at that show that the grass ended up getting real scruffed up.

Saw Wilco in London last night. My god. It blew me away!

  8. I really don’t like I’m A Wheel. It sounds too rushed, and the lyrics just don’t do it for me.

Favourite individual sounds on the album:

The piano chord under the word “home” of “fool me with a kiss of kidsmoke from a microscopic home”. -”Spiders (Kidsmoke)”.

The first note of “Hell Is Chrome”‘s guitar solo.
