I see what your saying, but I also think your being a bit unfair.
I think its currently the best time in history to be a music lover, but Hip Hop does indeed have a problem with not treating its albums as art, but as products instead. I think that part of this is good because it cuts out a lot of cred- begging bullshit, but in general it reflects poorly on the mainstream rappers when they blatantly say they are all about the money.
In the short term its understandable, but we’ve learned from rock, thats not how you cultivate a timeless career.
That said artists like Kanye and Wayne seem interested in exploring crazy ideas and releasing albums that challenge the audience. Unfortunately, neither of them has really nailed that yet, but at least they try.
i can agree with your statement that it’s an awesome time to be a music lover; however- i’d love to see more “underground” hip-hop get a chance to flourish. it’s a shame most people have no idea who aesop rock is, and part of the blame goes to “major” hip-hop acts. when a large record company is devoting so much money towards promoting their “product”, filling up all the available ad space and polluting the mindscape by propping up an album that would probably sell just as much without it, i take umbrage. i don’t want kanye’s inferior “product” pitched to me; i know i don’t like it already. please pitch me someone new that i haven’t heard, please.

Again, I totally respect your opinion, but I’m not sure Kanye should be the one being harped on when it comes to this subject. The fact is that hes probably one of the few mainstream rappers I can name that is doing anything OTHER than pushing product.
Who else is there? Lupe, Wayne, Kanye, Pharrel and who else? Not too many others. Even then, I really only enjoy Lupe out of those.
Plus, Aesop Rock overwrites… there I said it. Hes the Conor Oberst of hip-hop. lol.

Kanye just needs to realize that the way to be thought of as great or as a genius is not to go around telling people to think of him as that. he just needs to keep making great music and let it speak for itself.

CLEARLY the gay fishsticks joke is a play on that exact sentiment that you were describing, and you were too thickheaded for it.

I don’t beleive that Matt and Trey are homophobic. However, they use satire in such a weak way that they have a very LOUD homophobic fan base. Sorry, but satire is a tricky thing and it only works if its clever.
