If this is the last, or even only, piece of new music you hear all work week, you in fact had a good music work week. 2009 BTW tUnE-yArDs’ anticipated w h o k i l l LP is imminent, “Bizness” its lead listen. This stream comes from a Zane Lowe BBC telecast, and despite its radio-rippedness you can easily make out an enhanced production style, access to a proper studio paired with a conscious move away from the clipped and rattling lo-fi aesthetic that colored BiRd-BrAiNs bluesy, propulsive Sublime Frequencies soul. Putting that Blackberry money to good use. Fair enough. Merrill Garbus doesn’t need fuzzy recording techniques to hide behind, not with that voice, nor with this mix of influence and arrangement. “Bizness” brims with rim-clicks and a liquid, uplifting tenor-sax funk underlying Merrill’s remarkable voice, out front and arpeggiating all around your head in that Bitte Orca way, with the memorable phrase “I’m a victim yeah, don’t take my life away,” which you may recall from those shows she stole while opening for Dirty Projectors back in ’09. Which is to say, it’s worth a listen:
UPDATE: Now you can own the proper version:
w h o k i l l is out 4/19 via 4AD. (Spacing intentional, though she won’t freak out if you insist upon doing it the old fashioned way.)

Just bought a ticket for the Chicago show. I like her studio stuff, but she was really impressive when she opened for Dirty Projectors in 2009. I’d guess that a small minority of people at that show knew who she was, and she got a great crowd response.
i was there too, had no idea who she was, but was completely blown away cool show.
nice
Pretty great track. She has such an amazing voice.
Lovely stuff. Melody + sax reminds me of ‘Yam Lo Moshech’ by Fool’s Gold.
I agree that she stole the show when she opened for Dirty Projectors.. and when I saw her again as a headlining act it was definitely the best show I had been to in years. She played this song and it sounded incredible live too! Love her.
I well never like a song that replaces “s” for “z” in the title.
If so, then you’re laughably overpreoccupied with insignificant formalist concerns.
its not about the letters man, its about the type of people who think its cute / funny / clever to spell their songs like that.
I don’t think it’s about being cute or funny. She seems to a pretty intelligent person. You should definitely at least (it rules).
so bessie smith goes into the “type of people..” category for singing “‘Tain’t Nobody’s Bizness If I Do”…
get over it and just enjoy the song sheeesh!
So you have no room for Back That Azz Up in your life? Bummer.
I don’t believe this! My knees are sore from banging them together.
seriously incredible.
I cannot stop listening to this.
