outside-lands-2009-announced.jpg

The San Francisco music festival Outside Lands debuted last year in Golden Gate Park: We sent a photographer who captured Beck, Bon Iver, Broken Social Scene, and bands who don’t start with “b” (see: Liars, Jack Johnson, and Radiohead) in the great outdoors. The sophomore installment takes place 8/28-30. After a quick look, this year’s lineup feels a bit more cohesive than year one. Radiohead fans will balk because there’s no Radiohead, but the weakest spots aren’t always as weak as last year’s duds and, overall, the quality of bands is higher (especially once you move beyond Dave Matthews Band, jk). The other big headliners are Pearl Jam and the Beastie Boys, old timers. You’ll also spot Modest Mouse, M.I.A., Incubus, Tom Jones, Mastodon, Ween, TV On The Radio, Deerhunter, the National, and Black Eyed Peas. Fair enough: It’s difficult condoning a festival that includes Black Eyed Peas, but take a look anyhow.

  1. I’m glad I’m in NY because APW has a pretty superior lineup. But this definitely has something for all music tastes.

  2. The Black Eyed Peas? ?

Incubus?! Still going I guess. Even though I don’t listen to them anymore, they were prob the first band I really got into so respect. I’m also 12.

Last year’s outsidelands was probably the best time I’ve ever had at a festival. Accommodating weather conditions, great people, not much of a travel bitch (that is if you live in the bay area), and a great line up. (Broken Social Scene, Andrew Bird and Wilco all in one stage. Didn’t have to move at all in one day). This year’s lineup is a bit underwhelming, but I think I’m going anyway based solely on last year’s experience.

  8. os mutantes, they are still alive. awesome.

  9. OOps. Stereogum, you accidentally posted the flyer from 2004.

  10. Best video with puppets that I’ve seen in awhile.

Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band, Beastie Boys are also rumored to be playing The Austin City Limits Music festival this year.

I thought exactly the same thing right when I saw this lineup. But what does that mean for their chances of being at ACL? I say it’s extremely unlikely that ACL’s promoters will use the same three headliners as a festival that occurs only a month before. Or maybe that’s just what I’m hoping for since I really don’t want to see Pearl Jam or Beastie Boys. (I want Radiohead = first ever ACL appearance.)
