Bonnaroo 2011

It’s the 10th anniversary of Bonnaroo, the annual mud-encrusted farm party that’s turned into a cross-genre music festival of rather extravagant proportion. For this year’s throwdown they’ve really run the gamut of how topsy turvy this record industry is by tapping Grammy Album Of The Year winner Arcade Fire and Album Of The Year loser Eminem, along with Q*bert enthusiasts the Strokes, the legendary Buffalo Springfield, and two of this young year’s Billboard #1 selling artists, Amos Lee and the Decemberists, both of whom sold under 150K copies combined on their respective chart-topping weeks. The state of the industry is weird. The state of Bonnaroo seems like about as much fun as every year, though, which is a considerable amount of fun! Also of note on the agenda: Lil Wayne, Iron & Wine, Big Boi, Explosions In The Sky, Twin Shadow, Kylesa, Beirut, Robyn, Matt & Kim, Deerhunter, Sleigh Bells, Smith Westerns, Man Man, Best Coast, Wavves and on. The comedian lineup, one of Bonnaroo’s best selling points, hasn’t been announced yet, but they did get Conan O’Brien to do this lineup announce video, which you can watch below. (Note to Bonnacrew: Missed opportunity not flashing your logo somewhere around Conan’s mug. I would have made that this post’s associated image.)

  1. While they share some similar bands, I’m still liking Coachella’s lineup WAY better. Plus you aren’t out in the middle on BFE…

  2. The only reason I would go to Bonnaroo is if I lived in the area and it wasn’t a long drive. That’s it.

This is like the many-th line-up in a row that has been a mega-meh. Sure they got Explosions in the Sky & Big Boi, those are two good’uns. Last year they had Isis on their final tour.

But still. Coachella is sold out. So if Geography isn’t a factor, Sasquatch! is still the leader in line-ups well ahead of Bonnaroo.

    • Mega weak argument.

Explosions in the Sky and Big Boi are the only two good bands in that list? Great talent, don’t get me wrong, but you must be writing off many of the others because you’ve never even listened to them.

Close proximity as the only reason to go to Bonnaroo? Bonnaroo, unlike Coachella, Sasquatch, and Lollapalooza is the only festival that doesn’t set a curfew due to a sound ordinance. Have you ever been to the farm?

Sasquatch is a fantastic festival, but this is one of their weaker lineups. Neither Bonnaroo nor Sasquatch have even finalized their lists, anyway.

  3. so far. so far.

    this is the initial lineup..
    like ha ha
imagine if this was the lineup

    ha ha

  4. Not planning on spending 250 (just for a ticket) to see Arcade Fire and the Strokes.

  5. coachella lineup > sasquatch lineup > bonnaroo lineup

    • hmm, on second thought, i’d maybe switch up sassy and bonnaroo in that comparison. that said, i’d be freakin’ stoked to go to any of them.

  6. What is everyone talking about? This lineup is way better than Coachella.

    Buffalo Springfield
    My Morning Jacket
    Ray LaMontagne
    Junip
    Beirut
    DeVotchKa
    The Walkmen

I mean this is just hands down the best festival so far.

  7. What is up with these comments? The lineup is great!

  8. Jovanotti! Friggin’ sick. Do people in America even listen to him?

  9. This Bonnaroo is trash compared to last years. To make things even worse Sasquatch sold out today.

  10. the lineup is good. people always hate on any lineup, no matter what. if you’ve been to roo you know its a good time. of course coachella and sasquatch would be awesome but the no curfew, byob and total atmosphere at roo is reason enough to go if you, even if you aren’t close.

if you dont like at least 10 bands on the lineup of each fest i really dont know why you would be on this site. feel like most of the haters havent been and probably won’t be at any of the big fests this year.

  11. Every festival has to throw half assed rappers into every lineup. It’s a nice group of “artists” besides that.

  12. i like a lot of genres….i like a lot of artists – contemporary, vets, all of themem… for me this lineup is pretty sick. however, considering jack white generally makes an appearance, i’m pretty surprised i don’t see him anywhere on the bill.

i like broo’s unique acts. like darryl hall playing with chromeo last year, or the flaming lips covering DSOTM, and this year – dan auerbach and dr. john’s superjam?!?!?!!?! sick.

  13. Very nice, a good assortment as always. Dr. John is someone I am really looking forward to. I am kind of bummed that the Australian band Circle wont be in attendance, they had a massive year in 2010 and I was expecting them to be there.

  14. Why do all these festivals have to be in the goddamn middle of nowhere? At least have something closer to the east coast; perhaps a Woodstock reboot (and no not like ’99′s rap-metal comedy hour). If you can put rap in an indy rock festival, you can certainly put indy rock at an accessible region of the country. You know its the northern cities which actually buy into the good stuff, the smart stuff. Now if the Allman Brother and surviving pieces of Lynard Skynard were to launch a festival…

  15. Kinda wish Foster the People were going to be there, you guys checked out their new video for Pumped up kicks? Makes me ready for summer. http://www.fosterthepeople.com/videos/video-premiere-pumped-up-kicks/
