xx‘s spaciously hushed torch song “Shelter” is a distinctive handle for first-time listeners, the most balladic track on an album designed to soundtrack your night moves. It’s the one where Jamie xx’s production wins the most by doing the least. Those minimalisms makes it the least expected to be put through Hercules & Love Affair’s ’90s-house filter and — due to “Shelter”‘s negative space — the smartest choice for the band to project its signature beats. What was once Romy’s most emotive vocal is swapped for Kim Ann Foxman’s coolly disaffected one, and none of that affects this cover’s status as some hot shit. Listen up:
